when to switch from MH to HPS

Hey wasnt sure on this one so fort i would ask ur expertise opinions! I have been vegging under 250w MH just switched to 12/12 a few days ago, i have left the MH bulb in for now is this the way to do it? i was thinking for the 1st week of flower? Or do you put in the HPS as soon as you start flowering?

THanks

You can keep using the MH in the first 7-10 days of flowering to better control the pre-flowering boom and stretching. Some prefer changing the MH immediatly after the 12/12 program, others keep it running for a period of time. The decision is up to you and my advice is that you should take notes (and pictures) regarding the development in pre-flowering under MH for (lets say) 10 days. In your next grow, try prolonging or reducing the MH in pre-flower (heck, you can even flower under a MH) and again, take notes and pictures. Don't forget to share your conclusions with the rest of us :)

as filtrufrate said, decision is yours but imo I'd wait the 7-10 as said above especially if you have a very stretchy strain.

I would go MH all the way. The quality will be better.

Mh works fine for me too :smoke:

I bloom under Mh now using $25 4000K bulbs,
I don't worry much about stretch anymore like hps

thanks, i swapped in out after 6 days, as i was going away for a long weekend, come home and have noticed quite a stretch! I will try leaving for 10 days next time i run the strain and see what difference it makes! Ive not considered using MH for the whole grow, i guess the best of both worlds mite be a better idea with them new full spectrum bulbs! thanks for the hints

I've been using a 1000w plantmax dual arc bulb. Works great, and I don't fuss with it at all. The girls seem to love it, giving low to moderate stretch & nice fat buds.

Very, very nice work, Gnome. What bulb are you using?

sorry for the late reply,
I'm using a sylvania 1000w MH BT56 4000K and it does the job very well.
kelvin rating of 4000 is what you need to look for using a Mh in bloom.
I tried 6400K and 7200K and they don't compare

check out my thread in the side by side forum.
its become pretty popular, even with the Mh haters

lots of good info in it :smoke:

Ever used or heard of anyone using a Sunmaster Red Sunrise? 3200k. Seems nice.

You should all remember, that when you switch from vegging, either 24 or 18 hours to 12, you have to, at least compensate, for the lack of wattage, lost in the 6-12 hours it is suddenly off.

So going from 24 hours to 12, you should ideally double the wattage you give the plants in 12/12.

Also to avoid stretch, feed them bloom nutrient the first week of flowering.

The roots develop in week 1 and they don't need N. Feed them right, keep temps down, make sure there are enough room in the pots for some expansion so that the plant is not forced to grow leaf and stem instead of roots.

Done right it does not make a big difference using either Mh og HPS.

I use HPS in week 1 blooming, as the roots develop better under a red spectrum than a blue. 'if stretch is a problem I then revert to Mh and feed Veg nutes for another week or 2. Mh though, has much less intensity so yield suffers when only using Mh.

A Mh/Hps combo is ideal for yield and Quality.

I notice better Thrichs using Mh till week 3 and then again in week 9-10 on a 10 week strain.

A big and healthy rootsystem will give you bigger buds in the end.

ive used all MH grows and HPS grows.. from veg to bloom .. and found its all genetic related.. ive had the worst harvest ive ever had with a 1000w bulb under a MH. so I never tried it again.. but once i have the ideal strains.. for mh . maybe ill go back. but so far i haven't personally seen a mh bulb do better the hps.

so iunno ,

so iunno ,

genetics are the bottom line in how a plant performs.
leafy, calyx to leaf ratio etc etc

Ive said it over and over in my Mh vs HPS thread its genetics, some strains just will not do well with Mh in bloom,
and prefer HPS

BUT
what got my attention was running HPS and Mh in the same bloom run trying to see if trich production could be increased.
and what i saw w/Mh knocked it out of the ball park with my secret recipe keeper compared to hps

and some do terrible w/Mh in bloom...
its genetics or the K rating ime

my worst ever harvest was w/Mh in bloom
using a 7200k + 6400k solar max and sun master Mh bulb.
used a $25 sylvania BT 56 4000K bulb and it was bomb!
if your gonna use Mh in bloom get a 4000K
ime that's the 1 that will make you and your plants happy happy
and at that price its painless to change out bulbs every bloom run if you want :)
