BEIRUT — A freelance contributor to the Associated Press whose byline appeared on a controversial story that alleged Syrian rebels had gassed themselves in an accident told McClatchy on Saturday that she did not write the article and has been seeking to have her name removed from it since it was published by a small Minnesota-based website.

Dale Gavlak, a long time contributor from the Middle East to for AP, released an email statement to McClatchy and several blogs denying any role in reporting the story, which was published Aug. 29 by Mint Press News, which describes itself with the phrase “independent advocacy journalism.” The article carried her byline along with that of Yahya Ababneh, a Jordanian Arab-language journalist.

The story likely would have gone unnoticed in pre-Internet days. But thanks to social media such as Twitter and Facebook, it’s become a crucial piece of evidence for those arguing that the rebels, not the government of Syrian President Bashar Assad, were most likely responsible for an Aug. 21 chemical attack in the Damascus suburbs.

Within hours of the story’s release, Mint Press’s website crashed from excessive traffic, and the story continues to be cited by conspiracy-minded websites and supporters of the embattled Assad government in the wake of a U.N. investigation whose findings, many say, implicate the Syrian military.

In a phone conversation on Saturday, Gavlak, whose AP connection is often held up as evidence of the reliability of the Mint Press story, confirmed the statement and described a timeline in which she had been trying for weeks to get Mint Press to remove her name from the story. Gavlak referenced her emailed statement in the interview, saying she could not go much beyond it for legal reasons.

"Mint Press News incorrectly used my byline for an article it published on August 29, 2013, alleging chemical weapons usage by Syrian rebels,” the statement reads. “Despite my repeated requests, made directly and through legal counsel, they have not been willing to issue a retraction stating that I was not the author.”

“Yahya Ababneh is the sole reporter and author of the Mint Press News piece,” the statement added. “I did not travel to Syria, have any discussions with Syrian rebels, or do any other reporting on which the article is based. The article is not based on my personal observations and should not be given credence based on my journalistic reputation.”

Because of the incident, Gavlak and at least one other contributor to Mint News have ended their relationships with the website, which was founded nearly two years ago by Mnar Muhawesh, who is in her mid 20s.

Muhawesh, who was described in a January 2012 story on the MinnPost website as the daughter of Palestinian immigrants who graduated from college with a degree in journalism, did not respond to requests for comment left on her cell phone and sent to her Twitter and email accounts.

However, she later released a statement in which she said Gavlak and Ababneh had both come under pressure to disavow the story.

“We are aware of the tremendous pressure that Dale and some of our other journalists are facing as a result of this story, and we are under the same pressure as a result to discredit the story,” the statement said. “We are unwilling to succumb to those pressures for MintPress holds itself to the highest journalistic ethics and reporting standards.”

Gavlak produced a series of emails detailing her unsuccessful attempt to have Mint News either clarify the article’s background or remove it from the site. The emails begin almost immediately after publication of the story on Aug. 29th and continued through the weekend until Sept. 2.

The initial email detailing the filing of the story – Gavlak admits to helping Ababneh convert his Arabic reporting into English – reads “Pls find the Syria story I mentioned uploaded on Google Docs. This should go under Yahya Ababneh’s byline. I helped him write up his story but he should get all the credit for this.”

After seeing the story published under her name and the amount of interest it was generating – in large part because of the credibility lent to it by her relationship with AP, which bills itself as the “world’s oldest and largest newsgathering organization” – Gavlak demanded her name be removed. Muhawesh refused.

"We will not be removing your name from the byline as this is an existential issue for MintPress and an issue of credibility as this will appear as though we are lying," Gavlak said Muhawesh responded.

The story remains on the website with a note that Gavlak “researched and wrote” the story.

Gavlak implied that the nearly three-week delay in her public repudiation of the claim that was due to legal advice and pressure from the AP to let the controversy over the story die down since the story, which was thinly sourced, was not picked up by any major media outlets.

In a statement to McClatchy, Paul Colford, AP’s director of media relations, declined to discuss details of AP’s internal discussions or with Gavlak about the story. But he said it was “obviously of paramount importance… that this was not seen as assigned, edited or distributed in anyway [by the Associated Press.] AP had absolutely nothing to do with it.”

S-400 Triumph Air Defence Missile System, Russian Federation

The S-400 Triumph (NATO reporting name: SA-21 Growler) is an air defence missile system developed by Almaz Central Design Bureau of Russia. The new system replaced the S-300P and S-200 air defence systems of the Russian Army.
The S-400 was developed as an upgrade of the S-300 series of surface-to-air missile systems. The system entered service in April 2007 and the first S-400 was deployed in combat in August 2007. Russia set up four S-400 regiments defending national airspace in the Moscow region, the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad, and the Eastern Military District.
The air defence units of Southern Military District are expected to be rearmed with advanced S-400 Triumph by the end of 2012. Over 20 battalions of S-400 Triumph will be delivered to the Russian armed forces by 2015. Russia plans to induct 56 S-400 battalions by 2020.
Russia intends to supply export versions of the S-400 Triumph system to the armed forces of China. Turkey also expressed interest in purchasing S-400 air defence systems during the IDEF 2009 exhibition.
S-400 Triumph features

The S-400 is two-times more effective than previous Russian air defence systems and can be deployed within five minutes. It can also be integrated into the existing and future air defence units of the Air Force, Army, and the Navy.

S-400 Triumph missiles

The S-400 air defence missile system uses four new missile types in addition to the missiles of the S-300PMU system. The first missile inducted for the system was the 48N6DM (48N6E3). It is an improved variant of the 48N6M with powerful propulsion system. The missile can destroy airborne targets within the range of 250km.
The 40N6 missile of the S-400 has a claimed range of 400km and uses active radar homing to intercept air targets at great distances. It can be launched against AWACS, J-STARS, EA-6B support jammers and other high-value targets.

The S-400 Triumph also launches 9M96E and 9M96E2 medium range ground-to-air missiles. Designed for direct impact, the missiles can strike fast moving targets such as fighter aircraft with a high hit probability. The maximum range of the 9M96 missile is 120km.
Command and control

The 55K6E command and control system of the S-400 Triumph is based on the Ural-532301 mobile command post vehicle. The command post is equipped with LCD consoles to process the air space surveillance data of the individual batteries. It controls and monitors long-range surveillance radar, tracks airborne threats, prioritises the threats, and coordinates other batteries.
The system is also capable of exchanging data with other defence systems such as SA-12, SA-23, and S-300.
Radars

The fire control and target tracking radar of the S-400 is the 92N6E (NATO Codename: Gravestone). The radar is based on the MZKT-7930 8x8 vehicle. The 96L6 Cheese Board 3D surveillance and tracking radar is optionally carried by the same vehicle when the S-400 battery is deployed autonomously.
The 91N6E Big Bird acquisition and battle management radar of the S-400 is based on the 8x8 trailer. The radar can detect and track aircraft, rotorcraft, cruise missiles, guided missiles, drones and ballistic rockets within the distance of 600km. It can simultaneously track up to 300 targets.
Launch vehicle

The SP85TE2 launchers are based on the BAZ-64022 6x6 tractor truck or MAZ-79100 series Transporter-Erector-Launcher (TEL) vehicle. The TEL vehicle can carry up to four launch tubes holding a mix of missiles.

The establishment media tells a tangled tale about the scandal that forced the resignation of David H. Petraeus as Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) director. However, there are important details that shed new light on the matter compared to what the mainstream media has been reporting.

Many believe the scandal was a set-up designed to bring down the general precisely because he was a highly-placed figure standing in opposition to the push by Israel’s current rulers to engage the United States in a war against Iran.

I don't know how anyone can say we shouldn't get involved when he killed 110,000 people and probably would kill 3/4 of the population just to stay in power. I'd like to make a torch out of that piece of shit!

No...I like facts better. And as hard as it is to find objective reporting on events, striving to find information that is as truthful as can be expected when dealing with opinionated humans, there are certain strategies one can employ to weed out the most likely bullshit. Avoiding BS reporting from less than respected internet "news" sites is one of the first strategies to use, and avoiding reporting that states from the get-go that there could be errors due to translation problems is another well advised strategy.

The number of languages that I speak is meaningless. My ability to discern bullshit information is important though. Now, I'm guessing by your post that you speak more than one language. Big frickin deal, your inability to weed out the BS information just means that you can be lied to in more than one language.

One important thing to look for when considering information and whether it is solid is to see what the source is, and whether they have something to lose or gain by lying. That's why journalism in the US is considered the "fourth estate," as in being the fourth branch of our government after the executive, legislative and judicial...journalists, although they are definitely prone to subjective reporting, are much less likely to spread lies like politicians and other more opnionated folks. Politicians and other folks with an agenda are much more likely to lie about this stuff.

I don't have a horse in this race at all. I can see both sides of the issue, and can see where both sides of the arab/israeli conflict have done bad and stupid shit. You, on the other hand, do have a horse in the race. For some reason, you find it important to support the rotten Syrian dictator. This causes you to accept information you find without putting it to the bullshit test, and causes you to call people names.

Assad would have stopped the rebels inside 2 weeks if the west and arab countries were not sending money and weapons to the rebels. saudi even sent a bunch of convicted criminals over there to fight assad promising them pardons for their crimes if they engaged Assad. this is not an internal revolution, it steered and supported from out side Syria.

bombing the hell out of him would have done nothing but kill a bunch more people then have already died so far. the only way to stop this war going further is for a total weapon embargo on both sides and both sides forced to go and talk in geneva. no more foreign fighters are sent in from the west and no more weapons for Assad from the russians. cut both parties off from their funding and weapons and they will be talking before you know it. Storm Shadow, those two articles you posted were really interesting. I understand that the beforeitsnews operation is a low budget, minimally staffed operation that ran articles through a computer translator.

I did read a news report about a joint U.S., Israel missile test out in the Mediterranean Sea. I also read a comment somewhere that the U.S. had launched some missiles from Spain towards Syria which were shot down, and the U.S. pressured Israel to go along with the cover story of a Mediterranean Sea missile test to save face. The articles you've posted support this story, and also help explain why the U.S. diplomatic situation with Syria has appeared so haphazard, with threats of military strikes then sudden turn about and accommodation with Russian desires. For me, the picture seems to have come together here.

I discovered the website, Global Research just recently while looking into the Syria situation and investigating the possibility of false flag operations, and need to read more of what they have to say. This is very interesting. It would be a big embarrassment to the U.S. to launch a hundred cruise missiles at Syria and have Russia and Syria shoot them all down. Russia did send another missile cruiser to join its Mediterranean fleet. This has been very illuminating.
