A good refreshing smile and cheerful greeting
is the first vital step to establishing friendships with the people who live around us.
It's through our own exemplary actions and conduct
that we develop and expand our connections in the local community!

Our faith and practice manifests itself
in our daily lives as victory and success
through the driving force of our chanting.
In our local community, society or wherever we might be,
let's always try to shine as good examples.

"Bring forth the great power of faith, and be spoken of by all the people of Kamakura, both high and low, or by all the people of Japan, as 'Shijo Kingo, Shijo Kingo of the Lotus school!'"

"Faith is the courage to never give up. It means never giving up on the potential of your own life and that of others. It means never giving up on expanding happiness. It means never giving up on the victory of our cause. It means never giving up on creating peace. Faith, above all, is the courage to never ever give up on widely propagating the Mystic Law.

"You are my direct disciples who will be 'bluer than the indigo'—your achievements certain to surpass my own. You are the ones who will follow in my footsteps to lead long, long lives of great mission that will require unwavering commitment.

"The Daishonin’s spirit of 'What greater joy could there be?' expresses the very essence of faith. May your lives always powerfully resound with this same positive conviction. Please fearlessly and calmly discern the true nature of all obstacles with deep faith, and then confidently, wisely, and cheerfully overcome them. I hope you will also reach out to others near and far, and share with them the path of human revolution, which is a source of unsurpassed hope, fulfillment, and joy."

The Daishonin teaches,
"The voice carries out the work of the Buddha."*
It is our words full of joy and conviction
that move the hearts of our friends.
Confidently and with enthusiasm,
let's talk about our personal experiences of this practice with others!

"When many people get together, it's only natural that there will be differences of opinion.

"The Soka Gakkai is a gathering of diverse individuals, forming a harmonious community of men and women of all ages, from different generations, occupations, backgrounds, and places of origin. It would actually be strange if everyone had exactly the same opinion!

"But it is always possible for us to unite in spirit if we base ourselves on faith in the Mystic Law and go back to our greater purpose of kosen-rufu. When we do so, even though we may have minor disagreements about how to carry out our activities, we can respect and embrace one another.

"Often, within other organisations in society, differing ideas about the best way of doing things can lead to antagonism and even rifts. But in the Gakkai, if we base ourselves on faith in the Mystic Law, we can overcome such differences. This is the strength of our unity of 'many in body, one in mind.'

"To react to others emotionally or with hostility is to be defeated by negativity. When there is some problem, we should always turn directly to the Gohonzon, our starting point in faith."

"When caring for those we have introduced to Nichiren Buddhism and making earnest efforts to foster them into capable people, there may also be times when things don’t go the way we expect.

“There are cases when we do everything we can and try our hardest, but the person still decides to stop practising. However, that is not the fault of the person who introduced the individual to the practice.

“For example, say that someone built a bridge that leads to happiness and tells a friend to cross it. The friend then starts to make their way across, only to turn back halfway. It’s the friend’s choice not to try and cross the bridge. It’s their decision.

“As such, you have no need to feel discouraged by such an outcome. The fact that you have striven hard to introduce somebody to Nichiren Buddhism out of a wish to fulfill your mission as an emissary of the Buddha will be eternally engraved in your life and bring limitless benefit to bloom. You have without doubt opened the way to your own happiness. Please be deeply confident of that and press on in your efforts to share the Daishonin’s Buddhism with a fresh outlook and optimism.”

"Although Nichiren and his followers are few, because they are different in body, but united in mind, they will definitely accomplish their great mission of widely propagating the Lotus Sutra."

"A hundred years of practise in the Land of Perfect Bliss cannot compare to the benefit gained from one day's practise in the impure world. Two thousand years of propagating Buddhism during the Former and Middle Days of the Law are inferior to an hour of propagation in the Latter Day of the Law."

"No matter what your situation, everything changes and starts anew from the day you stand up with a renewed spirit and a fresh determination.

"Strive to be able to proclaim each and every day: 'I won!' 'I was able to have courage!' 'I was able to take a step forwards!'

"I hope a solid commitment to 'the fulfillment of the great vow for kosen-rufu through the compassionate propagation of the great Law' will always shine brightly in your hearts and minds.

"Energetically carrying out your own human revolution, changing yourself rather than trying to change others, and taking action yourself, instead of relying on others—those who strive with such a spirit are sure to win. This is the kind of resolve with which I have lived my life."
