True that man! I am excited to see how much I yield with these plants.....I view it as my year end bonus.

I basically dug 6 holes, mixed in my food blend, and left'em alone.

Never watered, or anything...just a set'em and forget'em deal.

Thanks for stopping in man.

Hey ICmag...so I been thinking about changing my setup.

I have been growing organically for the past 3 years and I think I am sick of the mess it makes. Recycling the soil is awesome but it is messy and a chunk of work.

I have been growing perpetually for the last three years also and am thinking I want a break from the constant trimming and transplanting.

I am considering RDWC, running 12 plants. No perpetual, just a 2.5 month bloom and repeat. The idea of using hydro seems a lot easier in my mind the more and more I think about it. Granted watching the pH and EC will be a new task, I think it out weights transplants in constantly mixing soil.

To make this viable I must yield 2.5 lb a cycle 3.3oz a plant. I need some encouragement. I have never done a full hydro setup but I know I will do just fine with it. Will the simplicity of hydro out weigh the ease of a water only organic garden?

Well I did it, I have decided to go hydro (rdwc) for the first time! I am pretty excited and I got a good hunk of questions.

I no longer plan on running a perpetual, I need a break..... so in order for this to be viable I must yield at least 2.5lbs a cycle using 1600w of lighting. I'll run a 8 plants total, so 2.5lbs broken down is 5oz a plant. The plants will veg for 6-8 wks in 5g buckets. The bloom cycle will be 9 weeks long.

I want to run large plants, similar to mini trees I suppose. Each plant will get its own 27 gallon tote in bloom which will have about 15.5 actual gallons of water in it. So im looking at 8 plant sites in addition too the control reserv which means I will have a total of 9 totes and about 140 gallons of water running RDWC.

That is a lot of water! I will run KISS, using only maxibloom and according to the pros, you need 7 grams per gallon of h20 (I will only do 6gram / 1gal)....so tell me if my conversion are right or wrong here.

140gal of total h20 X 6 grams of maxi = 840 grams

840grams / 453grams (total in 1 LB) = 1.85 LBS of maxi per flush/fill

That is a shit load of nutes per cycle! So question one, how many times would you suggest flushing and refilling w/fresh nutes each cycle? I was thinking one flush/fill @ week 4. So fill once at the start and flush/fill at wk 4 and flush/fill with pure h20 at week 8 or 8.5 to rid the nutes until wk 9. How does that sound? Each cycle I will need 3.7 lbs of maxibloom. YIKES.......

Okay here is my design:

picture.php

The lights will look like this: 600w HPS - 400w MH - 600w HPS

The red rectangles are the 27 gallon totes. The total size of the totes rectangled around the bulbs measures 9.8' long X 6.5'wide.

The control reserv will be outside of the bloom room like in the diagram.

The blue lines are bottom fed 1.5" passive return lines to the control tote.
The green line is a 1/2" pressure line spraying h20 into each tote from the top down (think water fall i guess).

My idea is to get enough water flow out of the pressure line to create enough dissolved oxygen so I wont need air stones.

Question two, what size volume pump should I get? Im thinking atleast 1000 GPH but I really have no idea.

1000 gph pump / 60 seconds = about 16.7gallons per minute

so my entire 140 gallons of water should completely cycle in about 8.5 minutes (140g/16.7 gpm)

what kind of pump should i be looking for? Suggestions please.

I wont be fully hydro swapped for 6 wks as I phase out my soil plants.

Please, give me advice and pointers because I want this to be a success. Do you think I can do 2.5lbs every 9 wks? Can not wait to run some monsters.......

How large do you think the plants will get with a 6-8wk veg in 5 gallon buckets? I am hoping at lease 2.5' tall before going into bloom.

Here is the start of it all:
