It is a fact. Here in the UK, we still have a few people left over from before the 1971 misuse of drugs act, who still get diamorphine (Heroin was a brand name) prescribed to them (their scripts were "Grandfathered" when the law changed). These people are in their 60s and 70s now and most of them are successful people who hold jobs, have families and go through life with their addiction causing no harm to anyone. We only had a few hundred Heroin addicts in 1971. As soon as the legal supply was taken away, the gangs came along and now we have a few hundred thousand.
Heroin addiction used to be called "The soldiers disease" because soldiers would get hooked on smack after some horrific injury, but would live to a ripe old age, shooting clean pharmaceutical grade smack every day.
The only reason actual Heroin isn't used in the US as pain relief, is nothing to do with high addiction potential. It's because it's so cheap and the patents are run out, and synthetics like Oxycodone make a lot more money for big pharma.
Most Heroin deaths are related to mixing with alchohol/other downers or the inconsistent quality. Dude slams 100mg 4 times a day for a week, then some new shit comes in and one shot kills him because his old shit was weak. Smoking Heroin is almost completely "safe", Unless you are really drunk or on a handful of downers and smoke a lot really quickly, you will goof out with your head between you knees and a a string of drool between your lip and the carpet, long before you can OD.


Walt isn't a bad guy because he deals in meth. People are taking it anyway, the money is being spent anyway, why shouldn't he get in on it and provide for his family. He's a bad guy because he is all twisted up inside about his failure to reach his potential, and is willing to go to any lengths to get what he feels he is due. I think there may some unfinished business with Grey Matter....
