The power of a good teacher

I catch myself thinking about my teacher/tennis coach here and there especially today, He died last year but the impact he had on my town is un-measureable. He was old enough to be my grandfather. He was from that "old school" they say. Disliked alcohol and any kid of drug. He actually taught me in Jr high 1st and knew I was going to play highschool ball. Even during my younger years he would bulldog me after class making sure I was ready "in 3 years" to play ball. Played under him during my HS years and he was a teacher for me in HS as well. He never really taught tennis but knew I could take him to state finals every year which I did. At one time in the 60's/70's he was the best HS football coach in my area code. 2 state titles from my little town. Guy was like a history book of my town and the ppl in it. One of the few ppl who wanted me to make something of myself and not fall into the trap of hard drugs and partying. Just did the extra things most teachers didnt. I wish I would have listened to him more when I younger. I thought I was too cool sometimies. I was given his football playbook from the 60's I still have it here in my room. I just wish when I have kids they can have a teacher like Mr. P. We will always remember you here in our town Mr. P.

your tennis star

"mitch" as he would call even though thats not my last name.

That's cool. Some are meant to teach, others meant to lead. Sounds like you had a good example to learn from, perhaps the best thing you can do is to follow their advice and apply it in your own life. Best tribute imho, well maybe not the whole no weed part heh heh...

Sounds like he was a significant person in yr young life ... and that you are sharing your sense of Grief with us around the anniversary of his death.

Don't tell us ... it's Private ... but if you could speak to him once more ... knowing it was the last time you'd see him ... what would you like to tell him?

Just to update this thread. My little town has decided they are dedicating their only Varsity football field in my deceased teachers name on 10/4. He will FOREVER be apart of my town but his presense will be where he influenced the most. at my old HS and THE FOOTBALL FIELD. forever the school will be playing games at RP field from now on.
