Petition by

Centereach, NY

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The recent rulings in both the states of Washington and Colorado show that legalization of marijuana can and will work, and that the rest of the country could soon follow suit. The State of New York, by becoming the third state in the country to legalize such use of marijuana, can not only be one of the first and foremost leaders in the War on the War on Drugs, but can also improve our state's citizens' quality of life by putting our tax dollars and law enforcement resources towards prosecuting more serious offenses, such as violent crimes and more serious drug offenses (i.e, trafficking of narcotics). By preceding the federal government by making these changes in our state's current penal code (where possession of small amounts of marijuana are already decriminalized), this action could very well convince the rest of the United States of America and the state/federal governing bodies that be to follow suit.

To:
The NY State Senate
Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New York
Kirsten Gillibrand, Senator of The State of New York
Chuck Schumer, Senator of The State of New York

Legalize recreational use of marijuana for adults age 18 and older in the State of New York to not only help redirect tax dollars/law enforcement resources to violent crime and more serious drug offenses, but also to eliminate unnecessary time and money spent on incarcerating both juveniles and adults for possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Sincerely,
[Your name]

According to recent polls, the support for legalization in the Northeast -- and yes that most definitely includes NY State - is higher there than anywhere else in the United States of America.

Change will come to NY State before this decade is out. You do not need to have faith in any higher power to believe this. It's cold, hard numbers and a demographic train that is moving in one inevitable direction.

Considering how much the state of NY likes to tax its residents you would think it wouldn't be an issue.

NY takes it's time on stuff. It'll happen, but not until several more states legalize it. NY only wants to be a forerunner when it comes to something like making large sodas illegal.

Your right ... it will happen . but NY will be one of the last ones to hold out !!! but like treetops said ..... it probably won't happen till coumo runs for president to help sway his votes !!!
Ny is all about the money !!! & once they realize how much they will make off it in state taxes .... then it will be passed . but i doubt it will be for recreational anytime soon .

that is the last thing i read about Colorado.

"— THE POT BUSINESS ISN’T OPEN FOR BUSINESS, YET: Colorado’s marijuana industry will for the first few months be limited to people already licensed to sell or produce medical marijuana. Even once the grandfathering period expires, licensees will need to be Colorado residents for two years, and investors will face residency requirements, too. The residency requirements were added to try to preventColorado from becoming a production ground for criminal drug cartels."
