I try to go by the harvest moons. Some will be ready on sept 18th (I think that date is right) and the rest on Oct 18th(again, not sure if this is the harvest moon date exactly)

When organic matter is burned, salts are left behind. In a water solution potassium will remain in suspension longer than other salts.
Soak the ash, save the water and let it 50% evaporate off. The salt ring left behind is what you don't want. The potassium is still in the water.
Google it. Potash was a major secondary industry as the midwest was cleared for farmland.
