Today I built a costco carport into a greenhouse

My story is I live in northern cali somewhere awesome. I have a very cool landlord that has a collecting issue. She has collected ALOT of stuff for i don't really know what for, she thinks everything has a use and can't throw things away. So i ask her if i can use the 2 costco carports. They are 20'x10' and I think about 8' tall? not sure tho. Anyways i framed one up so far with some wood that i found next to the carport. Also i found some green shade fabric for the bottom 36" of the carport. I was inspired by

Thank you jerry for the inspiration.

I will put up pics hopefully tomorrow if i can get around to it.

My greenhouse looks a bit different than jerry's. The reason is. Everything i found. besides the plastic, i bought Everything else was recycled.

Inside the greenhouse. the tallest in order i think is strawberry cough, lemon kush, blue skunk, tangerine dream, blue dream, blue widow, cashmere, cherry pie, sensi star, sour diesel, cheese quake, purple trainwreck, black cherry soda, ak 47, and i think the shortest is green crack. Anyways i thought i would throw up some progress. Btw they are all small because i didnt get to plant till july 14th, which where im sitting at some being 7' tall i feel pretty good about it.

The good news is that you found out what some of it is/was good for. Nice.

Might want to watch the temps in the 'shallow' end as it warms up.

This greenhouse has been working WONDERFULLY! it keeps the temps really nice and low during the day. I have a fan that is in the far back in the top that pushes the air towards the door. and has been doing a GREAT job :) I am so pleased with this so far!

Keep in mind IF it becomes pertinent....that the commercial GHs tend to have the fan/s, as extraction devices.

This is done to hold the 'skin' tight to the arches, especially during wind storms. They use the opposite end as a wet wall out here where it's dry. But in spite of your RH situation, your skin will last better if it's held tight by vacuum.

Glad to hear it's working for you. The more we learn and share, the better it'll be.

So cool! I used a car port for 2 almost 3 years of growing in canada, i insulated it with the hotwater heater bubble foil wrapp. worked well till i got past minus 5 or 6 then it would be cold on the outside edges, about 10 degrees difference from the edges to the center. never got that cold for very long maybe over night a few times. Worked well and was very cheap. I have since moved on. I still have it i might just build me a green house out of it good idea....memories eh!

By the way. Do you know what the light transmission percentage is on your 'skin'?

I've got poly carb panels on just the roof of my shed/GH and it heats like a bitch. If I recall mine are rated at 85% transmission. So I keep a small swamp cooler on line to cool it in the heat of the day. lol

Thank you so much! I would like any and all advice to make this work for the winter. I am expecting winter temperatures to dip down to the 30's - 40's for a few weeks in the winter. otherwise i would assume it will be about 50 and raining.

SO ill be honest. I bought the plastic at walmart. I was just walking thru and i was like.. hey i can get a piece of 3.5 mil plastic that is 20' x 25'... I could prolly use that to cover the costco carport... It worked! and it was $20 for the plastic. I have no idea on the light transmision or really any facts about it. THank you tho for youre interest I am very open to more advice! thanks so much!!!

Rumor has it that unless it says for GH use on it, that it will be designed for construction and landfill disposal i.e. UV is supposed to start to degrade it fairly quickly.....

I'll be looking forward to hearing how it's holding up in the GH use...Plenty cheap even if it's for just one season though.

I got the plastic out of the paint and project isle of walmart. So i expect to have to replace it come spring. BUT 20 bucks is worth it to get by for a few months in my opinion. and im only renting here and its my first time. So i will hopefully be buying a place within the next year or two and can start with more serious greenhouse plastic with better put together greenhouses! I will say this tho. The plants are SOOOO HAPPY!!!!! They love having it be nice and humid and they keep there moisture WAY longer :)

ya id grab some plastic off the net that is UV safe.. we had our greenhouse at the old house fucking degraded and honestly ended up with holes late in the season.. which caused rain and snow to get into it easier.. and BAM woke up to fuckin BUD ROT over 80 % of the grow. make sure u got some power going out there FANS ARE A BIG HELP wen going deep into the season . lol . we harvested greenhouse buds the night before Xmas back in 2011

another thing if ur going to try and get a winter harvest.. the roots are most important. if u can keep ur roots from freezing.. ull be pretty good.. we used a reverse chiller.. using hot water and a 8inch tall box.. 6 feet by 12 feet.. with pond liner basicly like a huge cooler.. underneath.. then we used hot water to fill it.. and a pump to recirculate it. took a lot of work.. but man wen it was done. we could run our greenhouse in -15 degree F with no problems. the water stays heated threw the nights with the pumps.. and if it drops below temps the hot water releases and the over flow goes into the barrel the RES is sitting in. to keep the Res temps above freezing.
