I've been growing from this same mom for a year. Last harvest was processed same as the rest bud it just don't smell of anything but hay. Potency remains the same. A friend grew cuts from the same mom and had the same results - no good odor.

For the longer term I ditched the mom and I'm growing out a new one. But I got a bunch of this same girl in week 3 of 12/12 and I'm wondering if there's summat I can do to improve the smell?

A couple questions to help us help you:

What was the difference from previous runs?

Same nutes, temps/humidity?

What's your medium/wattage?

Under what conditions did you dry/cure?

Shit's easy once you master the complexities, lol.

I've been using Simon's curing method, which really brings out desirable aroma & taste.

It's a sticky at he top of this section- "A perfect cure every time".

I add boveda packs as insurance against over drying. I'm sure it'll work for larger quantities as well in any airtight containers.

i had the same problem with smell when i wet trimmed bud smoked good but smelled like hay. When i dry trimmed the difference as far as smell was night and day. imo

@ Gloryoskie There was no difference at all between this grow and previous ones. Temps and humidity might have varied just slightly given the weather outdoors but it's pretty well controlled in there.
Nuts and medium are canna coco, girls grown under 600 watters.
Wet trimmed, hung about 8-10 days in the vented 12/12 room.

Thing is, friend had some cuts from the same batch, ran them in his own system and got the same result - no good smell.

@JHHNN, Thanks for the steer, man. I'll take a look at that tonight.

@Thanks for chipping in. I always wet trim and never had this problem before.

@Hillside grower. Same as above man but two of youse saying the same thing means I'll read about dry trimming tonight as well. Thanks for speaking up.

I was thinking someone was going to say stick x y or z in your rez...!

Get the flowers to OVERDRY and then give back a little humidity (closet with a humidifier) before jarring. Sealing with too much moisture is the source of hay smell IMO.

Individual strain characteristics, early harvesting and improper drying are the main causes of lack of intense aroma in finished product.

Let them go until they are truly ripe. Dry them slowly and evenly and store them properly when they are dry.

Hydrosun hit it ^^^... Jar with too much moisture, and the smells never seem to develop properly, and you're stuck with hay, hey!

You can put lemon or orange peels in the jar for a cpl days. Works like a charm

I wouldn't recommend over drying your bud or drying it too quickly. IME, this is more responsible for the hay smell. Jarring wet bud is a recipe for mold and musty or ammonia smells.

If you dry them just right, the outside will feel dry and when jarred the inner moisture will evenly dissipate throughout. You should end up with a consistently dried yet sticky bud with just the right amount of "spring" to it when you squeeze it gently.

Adding moisture to an over dried bud seems like an invitation for mold. IMO it should only be done as last resort if you over dried.

Try a brown paper bag with your almost dried, trimmed buds. 1-2 days in a brown paper bag once the bud r is almost completely dry, it will help your smell and aroma a lot. Then to the mason jar for a couple of weeks. Make sure to let your mason jars breathe.
The hay smell is caused from the bud being too wet. Storing in plastic can cause this too (tupper ware, plastic bags, etc.)
Everytime I go to place my harvest in the mason jars. The bud feels dry to the touch, place in a mason jar for 12 hours and it gets soft, leave jar open for an hour, bud feels dry again, close jar for another 12 hours and check. Repaet process til bud does not get soft again.
