i ran into a hermie issue last round due to a light leak from my A/C unit. i didnt find it until i was too late! all the plants in front of the A/C unit seeded out at week 5 and they quickly pollinated most of my flowering room. certain strains seeded out much worse then others, after harvest, drying, and curing i was still able to smoke most of it. probably had an average of 8 seed per quarter oz from the heaviest seed plants.

i guess you could if you want to sift through all that wet shake... they should definitely stay in the first screen. i dont know whether or not seeds will still germinate after being exposed to such cold temps.

The flowers which were pollinated will produce seeds. Newly developing flowers which missed the pollination event won't produce seeds. When you harvest you can clean the seeds out of your buds when you break them up to smoke or process.

It's remarkable how younger tokers don't know how to deal with seeded pot. It's all there was way back when.

Grinders are no good, because they break the seeds, which don't smoke well.

What does work well is an old fashioned kraft cardboard shoebox, like this-

http://lcwrite2.blogspot.com/2010/09/empty-shoe-box.html

Crumble some buds into the box. you can feel the seeds, so pinch them out of their coverings. Tip the box up a little bit, scoop/lift the material towards the top with a playing card & the seeds will bounce/roll out, collect at the bottom end. Repeat as necessary/ pick out small stems to get cleaned smokeables. Gently shaking the box side to side at the same time is also good technique. It's easier with material that's a bit on the dry side. You'll lose some smokeable material to the bottom with the seeds, so repeat with that portion. Experiment with your technique to get it right.

That's how I learned to do it in the summer of 1967.

It will only form more seeds if the female flowers get pollinated.

Examine the plant for male flowers or small individual pollen pods AKA "naners" Those are what are causing seeds. If there are only a few, carefully pluck them with tweezers and monitor the plant for new ones.

If you have an actual hermaphrodite or a male plant nearby, its probably too late. Seeded bud will still get you plenty high. Its just harder to sell.

Females will often attempt to self pollinate late in flowering. They do this by producing single male pollen sacs. This is a survival mechanism and is not due to stress or light leaks. This is also different from a hermaphrodite plant or "hermie" which displays full male and female flowers at different places on the same plant. Herm plants will be obvious earlier and dont just happen during the last few weeks of flowering.

I am skeptical of the whole "hermie" thing. I do not believe light leaks cause male flowers. Most people will see a few seeds when they are harvesting and attribute it to some "stress" when it is natural and unavoidable.

Ron,
last round i experienced a light leak from my new A/C unit... it went unnoticed for almost 2 weeks... every plant underneath the A/C unit started spitting nanners all over sadly i missed them before the first pollen sack released... got a few seeds here and there but nothing horrible. the previous crops of the exact same strains and grow conditions have never produced a single seed until the leak. just wanted to mention this because the only new factor in my grow room at the time was the a/c unit light leak. since the fix i havent seen a single nanner anywhere, same strains same flowering time everything.

At what point can I harvest the seeds from the pollinated plants? I have 8 plants in a grow tent and half got pollinated and the other half didn't. I had two males that were in another room and that's where the pollen came from. I didn't kill the males soon enough. All eight (4 berry bomb and 4 thc bomb plants didn't do that well that's why I want to make hash from all 8 plants and collect the viable seeds for future grows. Any advice??

Just keep the plants fed, watered & growing until you can see the pistils opening somewhat as they swell from the seeds. Those pistils will often discolor as the seeds mature. Sample some seeds when you think they're ready. When sampling & observation give the impression that there are enough mature seeds for your purposes, harvest. Seeds will mature over a timeframe, so if you want more, wait more until very few/ no immature seeds show up in your samples. In the buds, mature seeds look like this-

Are you sure the plants didnt self pollinate. If two full male plants released pollen close enough so that some of the females in the room were pollinated, they would all be covered in seeds. More likely the females produced a few "naners" and made a few seeds by themselves.

The seeds will swell and spilt the calyx and eventually fall out. When they split the calyx, are dark in color and hard they are ready to plant.

Well I did have two males with pollen in the other room and I didn't notice any nanners but only half of the eight got pollenated. I think I will harvest next week and collect the seeds and make hash out of everything. I'm ready to start my White Rhino grow and learn from my mistakes. Wish me luck.

Certain grinders actually do work well for sorting seeds. The cheaper ones are no good, but units with multiple levels like the medium sized Mendo Mulchers are pretty efficient, the key is picking a grinder with large enough holes to let seeds through into the bottom, then a little sorting with ones finger against the keef screen picks out all the hard seeds.

The only problem i've ever had with this method was it tended to strip the stripes off of really dry, brittle seeds, though the seeds would generally still germinate.

I agree that the younger smokers, especially here in America, are spoiled rotten on seedless pot.

When you study traditional cannabis production methods, and see that pollination is the preferred method of maturation, you stop worrying so much about the occasional seed, unless you're a lazy stoner who puts whole buds directly into the bowl.

Thanks for the tip on the grinders, smurph. Having only recently returned to the scene, my experience with them is very limited. I did spring for a large spacecase "titanium" grinder, single stage. It's an excellent tool that munches up everything, a nifty innovation. It'd probably crush gravel if I were strong enough to turn the halves. I doubt seeds would have much of a chance.

At the same price & quality, seedless pot is clearly a better buy, but it's not like seeds are poisonous, or that seeded pot is necessarily of lower quality, either. A few seeds in a bag of superb stuff are an unintentional gift from the grower. As I understand it, that's how the whole Chem line was preserved & propagated into the myriad descendants of today, probably some others as well.

I like growing from seed, particularly when I really don't have the facilities to keep mums or the connections to obtain reliable clones. The range of tastes, smells & effects of modern cannabis is really pretty amazing, much more than I expected when I came back to growing. After a bit more exploration, I want to find try some relatively true breeding strains i really like so that I can grow my own seeds
