Load up on the corn for these movies because when you see what passed for high-tech when I was a kid you will laugh your socks off at the fact that we were utterly terrified.

I recommend Hard Eight.

It stars Philip Baker Hall as an aging gambler who teaches John C. Reilly how live for free in Reno. Also starring a young Gwenyth Paltrow, and Samuel L. Jackson. Watch for then unknown Philip Seymour Hoffman in a small part as an obnoxious craps player.

This is an excellent film for lovers of crime drama, gambling, mob movies. A very under-appreciated film in my opinion, even though it garners a 7.2 on IMdB.

Movies I watched and enjoyed recently.

"Life of Pi". Didn't think I would like it, but it was really good. That would have been awesome to see in 3D.

"African Queen" the famous old 50s Humphrey Bogart movie. I usually don't like old 50s films because of the phony back drops, poor editing and direction, but this was an adventure flick filmed in color live in Africa with a good director and high quality cameras. It is famous for a reason. If you've never seen this old movie it is a classic worth watching. Unlike many classics that don't hold up to time this movie was still very enjoyable. It is on Netflix streaming.

"The Running Man" cheesy Arnold Schwartzenegger at his height of fame. Fun and enjoyable movie but really silly. Silly in a way like Mad Max. It is like an 80s coke'd up version of the Hunger Games. Good to watch stoned.

similar to The Gods Must Be Crazy, but different, and probably even a smaller budget, is this little gem: The Luggage Of The Gods.

Plot: An uncharted island between Hawaii and the mainland is directly underneath the flight path of big jets transporting vacationers. On this island, there is a tribe of prehistoric people, and they think the jets are Gods, and they get on their knees and pray to them whenever they fly over the island. They are not allowed to look up at the jets once they notice them. One day one of these jets has a fire in the luggage compartment, and has to drop all the cargo, which happens to be when the jet is directly over the island. All the cargo lands on the island.

Of course, every tribe has its rule breakers, and the 2 artists in the tribe (named Yuk and Tull), always look up at the jets. They see all the cargo fall from the plane and go looking for it and find it. They eventually tell the rest of the tribe. The movie is about what the tribe does with the cargo and how it affects them.

Its a fuckin riot. But good luck finding it.

The Blob, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Fly & so many others were paired for the Saturday afternoon matinee with even older Bela Lugosi vampire flicks, Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon etc.

Mom would drop me off to meet friends with $5.00, ticket was $1.00 & 4 bucks bought an orgy of crap at the concession stand, we all left bloated and scared out of our wits, even though we'd lived through each of the movies before.

The original House on Haunted Hill was hands down my favorite flick for a fright.......

I saw Paul Newman in Slapshot recently....still a very funny "jock" movie

I also recently enjoyed Hitchcock's "North by NorthWest" ..the sets were fantastic, especially the Wright inspired house.
