Congrats Northstate, welcome to the Club. "Terp'n is a way of life" bumper stickers are in the mail along with your "green horn" pendant. Dues every 3rd Wednesday of the month, Potluck dinners last friday of every month. GW will be handing out the decoder rings and teaching all the greenhorns the secret handshake.

Specialized Formulations builds and markets the Mk IIIA Terpenator kits. Graywolf is not a part of, nor does he have any interest in Specialized Formulations.

Graywolf teaches BHO classes that include how to assemble and run a Terpenator, through Skunk Pharm Research.

Understood. One day I will have me one of them there dang'ole fine reclamation units and whatnot. ;) Till then I think I need just a cheap ass vac setup to do me right.

That's more work than I want to do. I want to just purchase one that will work off the shelf.

Is the ramp controller really necessary? Seems like you'd only need that if you wanted to run different temps for different time periods.

Curious if you've seen any of the Across Int., ovens and what your opinion is of them?

The ramping controller is necessary to maintain a close set point, when the elements are 500W each. Maybe the hysteresis is low enough with smaller strip heaters, to not need ramping controls.

Haven't had the pleasure of playing with an Across International oven.

I have been using the AI 0.9 cu/ft for about 8 mo now and am satisfied with its performance for the price so far. I have found it to stay within +/- 2F once it reaches its target temp. It takes about an hour for it to start up and settle down on the target temp, so i usually just turn it on when i get up, and it is ready to go by the time im done with breakfast.

It can get a little wiley when you change the temp, and can go over by 15F sometimes, so i just keep it at 115F all the time.

In retrospect i would definetly get the 1.9 Cu/ft if your doing bulk, the .9 isnt big enough to keep up with the amount of oil coming out of the MKIII at full production.

I broke the cheap plastic handle off my door recently, and have been using a clamp since then.

Have you guys seen that cold trap they have at AI, looks like it could condense a massive amount of ETOH, but way too pricey.

AI has certainly caught on to their customer base's needs....

No mine doesnt have the 28 segment controller. Unless your product is in the oven while it heats up, im not sure that is is that important, I just wait till the temp has settled to my target before i put anything in there.

Not sure about disconnecting the heating element, its fairly accurate as is. I think GW did that because he bought a different used oven that didnt have quite the right temps we are looking for.

AI seems to get that these are being used for BHO and have designed these low temp ovens with that in mind.

These things are shatter machines!!!

Definitely get extra shelves, i bought some flat steel plates designed for this oven from TopShelf extracts and they really help with evening out the heat. The wire racks heat a little unevenly since the metal heats up certain parts of your oil more than others.

FatherEarth, I'm really enjoying your excellent presentation of the Terpenator Mark III! Have you seen the silicone heat mats I've been trying out? I'm completely water bath free, and loving it! ;-) https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=5915060&postcount=4
The Dorkfood DSV still seems to be the least expensive plug and play PID temperature controller, as I no longer believe the Ranco ETC is much more than a simple thermostat with a heavy duty mechanical relay. I assembled my own DIY PID temperature controller setup with solid state relay and PT100 sensor for about $50 in parts...

^^^^^^^^^^^ Dude Thats awesome!!!!! Props on the creativity!!!

I will also agree with regisphilburn, the AI vac ovens are awesome, specially the 1.9 cuft, just enough room to keep up with 2 MKIIIa's running all day. They hold temp great and seems to go to very low temps no problem. I keep mine right at 110F/50C. I put ceramic tiles on top of my selves so it has a nice even warm shelf that slowly will adjust to temp if i happened to ramp up the temp for a batch to get done quicker. 3 shelves seem to work just dandy.

Also I've been discussing something with a friend and we've found out where that mystery oil comes from when your first filling the machine with the canned butane... IT IS FROM THE BUTANE!!!! He sprayed 50 cans though a clean glass tube, into a SS pot and evaporated the butane off and what was left behind was a gross oily substance, same as what i found in my recovery pot when i filled my 50# tank with 3 cases of butane. I fill my 50# tank by filling my column with activated charcoal, and hooking the can tapper up to the butane supply hose and run the machine as normal. So the tane goes through the charcoal then gets recovered and put in the #50 tank, every time i'm done filling(have filled my tanks about 7 times) i open up the collection pot to find a gross oily substance that smells like a tire shop, or those cheap hoses when they are brand new. I've tried multiple butanes, Vector, Lucienne, Colibri, Newport, and many others, they all leave this residue behind. But it does get left behind! I've done runs with no material just to see if the butane leaves the collection pot clean and it doesn't, no a drop of oil or even a scent of smelly rubbery oil, so it can be separated which is good to know. So i've come to the conclusion that theres something that being used to can butane, i don't know what it is and the manufacturer wont say and just asks why we are worried about this oil substance lol.... Makes me worried about the years of open blasting through glass tubes, how much of this oil have a smoked??

A6,
i have been noticing the same oil every time i tap new cans into the system. And i use all stainless lines, so it is not the hoses....

Good call on tapping through the top of a charcoal filled column.

I feel like the can tapping procedure should be changed a little bit. When tapping through the vacuum port, i feel like that is way too easy for the Appion to suck in liquid tane because the ports are on the same cross. I dont think the appion is meant to pump liquid, and if it sucks the liquid tane in before it evaporates out of the recovery pot, then this mystery oil is now in the LP50.

I have been putting an end cap on the column port and tapping through the #4 port and it has been working great. But your charcoal column sounds even better.

(Pic is befor i got the stainless lines made)

Glad others have found this oil too, I dont tap thought the top of the column, the machine is put together as normal just filled with charcoal and have the can tapper exactly how you have it. So it goes up thought the column then back down into the pot then recovered. I agree the appion most liking sucks liquid when you fill thought the vacuum port. After i filled my machine how GW suggested i got a new tank for fear of that oil in my tank, i emptied and cleaned the tank out and use it as a back up now.

Just wanted to post on how happy I am with my oil after incorporating the winterizing technique. I believe that I am now inhaling a healthier smoke just based upon taste. I cannot wait to try a low temperature purge on my extractions via vacuum.

Fatherearth. How much time does it take to complete one full run depending on how many cycles to the final purging?
