Finishes between 8-10 weeks- Duh!

You see so many descriptions of strains that say, "finishes between 8 and 10 weeks", right? But, what finishes faster than eight weeks or takes much longer than ten? In other words, isn't saying "finishes between 8 and 10 weeks" pretty useless?

I consider anything in the 8-10 week range as fast-flowering. Average is 10-12. Long-flowering is anything longer than that. Quicker than 8 weeks? Hmmmm. Sure, it exists, but not if you really want a complete spectrum of cannabinoids.

1. Phenotypical differences throughout a selection of seeds
2. Different factors for the buds to be harvestable for different people.
-some might pick by trichome color
--this alone could easily cover a span of a couple weeks depending on if you like to pick at 100% clear 50/50 cloudy/amber 20/80 cloudy/amber, etc.
-some people might pick as soon as the bud is at 80-90% of its finished size just so they can flip to new runs. for these people my 10 week strain might be a 7 weeker.

It seems more honest to give a range. Some breeders will give you the finishing time for the fastest pheno out of the group, or, with some untested f1s, a pure guess based off the parents.

What I'm saying is, unless its a heavily incrossed or backcrossed variety and super stable, or a clone only, there's little chance that every example of a variety could be picked at the same time, all being at the same stage of ripeness. Even with clones, its common to have a window of likely harvest such as 8-10 weeks for the same factors listed earlier.

I'm a fan of breeders giving lineages and accurate harvest time windows based on testing. Problem is, there's a lot of stuff that's nice to get untested so you can get it as fast as possible. Taking the risk to find that 1 keeper out of 10 or 20 based on my personal preferences and what I'm looking to get out of a variety seems like just about the smallest risk working with this beautiful plant.

I don't even pay attention to recommended flowering times because they are never what they are supposed to be. Everything I have grown usually goes more and rarely if ever less. It's usually a minimum of 11 weeks for just about anything.

I just grow what interests me, when it finishes it finishes.

No, I want them to say, "Finishes in 63 days", or something like that. :)

You want the inaccurate but exact flowering time.

Some of us would prefer an accurate flowering time window.

All about personal preference.

Whenever I see the flowering time listed in days from most breeders, I assume it means either what the flowering time of the fastest flowering parent was or the fastest flowering time from the test run selection, but not an overall idea of how long the average example will take.

With all the variables in growing, when I read a flowering time I silently add, "Your mileage may vary." We aren't poaching eggs here.

Probably a lot more than the seed vendors would like to admit in their description.

Bingo!!! Every time I read 55-65 days on a seed pack I think to myself, well 10 week finisher she is then. Probably get lucky and get one fast one in your pack. Personally never seen a strain that wouldn't be better if you left it an extra week from what the "breeder" says.

Sweet Tooth and ECSD, two different extremes.
One 6, One 11
Lots of examples out there

Sweet Tooth 6 weeks?:woohoo: It is ahead of my others right now but damn! Hope so, really 8 weeks would be great.

Never had any strain that was ready before 9 weeks and 10 would be more to my liking. I count after I flip the lights but others may count after flowers appear, 2 weeks or so after flip.

I've had a nlxbb that can be taken at 6 weeks if the need was there. Same as the power kush I had, six weeks commercially, and eight weeks for max flavor. On the other end of the spectrum, I had tangerine dream that was taken at ten and prolly could have went 14, and barney's says it's a 70 day'er.

No it's not useless...it depends on the phenotype...duh.

Just sayin, breeder packs count from first flowering signs.

So... add 2 weeks onto the count, automatically. That's why it's "finishes" between. Nothing counts until the actual first signs of flowering, pistils.

People take it as the count starts from the flip, but it really doesn't start for another 3-20 days, 14 on average.

Not sounding harsh at all, especially towards the person I quoted, he's a good dude.

-11 weeks an extreme end? Are many people even aware of sativa strains existence anymore? -lol

-Now, say....... for a better long end EXTREME example - one might cite REAL examples:

-Kerala sounds like it is 18-20 weeks in bloom.

-Some Highland Thai can require 22 weeks in bloom.

I am just fine with most people not having anywhere near enough patience for true sativas - but what does frustrate me is when so many people act like or think that they do not even exist.

-your loss if you never try to experience sativas and their highs - just please do not be in denial over these issues~
