how much can deficiencies/stress affect the final high?

i ask because i have grown a strain that (most likely) suffered from severe mag def in the last few weeks (and it was a little hot).

yield was acceptable but the resulting bud is very weak. also - it is supposed to be 75% sativa, but after 2-3 rounds this stuff puts you to sleep. not at all what i had in mind.

now i'm not sure if the genetics are to blame or my limited growing skills.

how much can grow problems change the high? can it be 180° different or should it still be in the same ballpark?

TIA!

no one?
maybe i should have posted in strains & hybrids?

maybe i didn't formulate my question properly?

Hey Max,

I don’t think your growing skills would turn an up, energetic sativa into a “put you to sleep” stain. I’ve grown the same clones in very different environments and the stone was always almost the same, sometimes stronger/weaker but to a small degree.

ah, excellent. that's the info i'm looking for!
(before i start crapping all over this strain i need to know how much of the disappointment is my fault)

Hey Max, I agree with Adze. Conditions can only mean so much, genetics are a bigger factor in the high. I find poor growing conditions have more of an effect on yield and taste. If the plants where healthy enough I am sure the high would'nt change too much the second time around .

What is the strain in question? If you don't mind me asking...

the strain in question is "mekong high" - one of their newer releases.

here is their ad copy for it:

This acclaimed new addition to the Dutch Passion family is a particularly potent indoor/greenhouse strain with an incredible soaring sativa high, using pure genetics directly from the Laos/Vietnam jungle area. The main features of this special strain are the incredible ‘happy and smiley’ sativa stone and the high yields associated with the huge growth potential.

Our smoke test team gave this a top-class rating, an old school ‘retro’ high with a great herbal taste. It has a refreshing aroma and a notable long lasting clean ‘up’ high that clears the mind and completely relaxes the body. The high is good for socialising as well as creativity.

The plant can have brown or purple colourations during late flowering and is resistant to mould/bud rot. This is an ideal strain for the outdoor/greenhouse grower that is looking for pure, unadulterated jungle genetics that will remind you of the great Sativa smokes of the 70’s.

75 % sativa - 25 % indica

it sounded so awesome to me, but none of it is recognizable in my final product. the high is non-relaxing (brain and body), very weak, not soaring at all. i have to smoke 4x the amount i usually do to get at least some effect. after 2-3 rounds i'm fighting to stay awake. "happy & smiley" also isn't true - i'd say the high is somber & introspective.
the "huge growth potential" is true though - they put out giant fan leaves and i had to use major bondage to keep the height down.
maybe results would be better if one uses much more light? (i used 400w)

side note: all 4 MH plants showed those mag problems. in contrast, 2 100% indicas (spoetnik) growing in the exact same conditions had no problems whatsoever.

but this disappointment has made me resolve the following:
I WILL GROW NO MORE STRAINS THAT HAVEN'T BEEN ON THE MARKET FOR AT LEAST 10 YEARS.
