just a few pics of some of the lilies that flowered for the first time this year, been waiting for 4 years to see the results, and now I have to wait another 4 years for the next generation to flower...

I have been working on making upright trumpet shaped lilies for a long time, trying to get some different colours into them than the comon white and yellow

here are 2 of the more succesfull upright ones

and here are 2 that had the normal flower position (down to out facing) but i really liked the color and shape, they didnt fade much in the sun, I crossed them with siblings of equal colouring, so hopefully there will be some upright ones with these colours in the next generation, just wished it was as fast to see the results as with cannabis

all the pictures are taken with my cellphone, and the 2nd of both the upright and outfacing looks alot better irl (actualy they all do), the upright one has a really special dusty dark purple colour, and the outfacing one is so delicate and elven like (best way to describe it :p)

I agree wit da wabbit. The copper/purple is rather unique.

Ive been thinking of trying to cross day lilies. Please share your pollination technique and any other thing you care to.

Daylilies (Hemerocallis) are not the same as Lilies (Lilium), so i dont know if the pollination technique is the same, but I think it´s pretty much the same, here is a picture

Lilium is self sterile, so they need to be crosspolinated, but i dont know if its the same with Hemerocallis

Thanks roach. I have both.

Every spring I weed all the lilium seed sprouts out of my beds. The bees do all the cross pollination. Maybe I should keep the seedlings - bees know flowers.

Or maybe I should start a bed just to let them grow - who knows...

Here is another of my own creations

I used this tetraploid trumpet as the mother

picture.php

and this tetraploid oriental/trumpet hybrid as the father, it's a old clone called Leslie Woodriff that I bought years ago, it's one of the most hardy and vigorious lilies

picture.php

and this is the result, there was some variation among the siblings, but this one was the best

the first picture was taken last year when it flowered for the first time, the summer was colder than this year so the flower looks more pink, where in the 2nd picture taken this year, its alot more white
