Hi my friend was given a transformer which says on it 600w HPS/MH would it be ok to use a 400w HPS bulb with this transformer could anyone clarify please thanks for your assistance.
He would perfer to use a 400w HPS if possible as he hasn't a lot of money and wants to keep cost to as little as possible

It's been said to always match wattage of your transformer
to the bulb.

Please verify with an electrician, or someone who knows
for certain.

No it is not ok to use a 400w bulb in a 600w ballast.

Bulbs and ballasts must ALWAYS match.

There is no monetary advantage to be gained from being cheap, regardless of the bulb size that ballast will still consume 600w worth of power. I have seen bulbs melt when the wrong size bulb was used in a larger ballast. It is very dangerous to use things outside of their intended purpose.
