hush grows up! 1000w MH/HPS in 4x4 tent

Trimming out the undergrowth seems inevitable with the pinched back dense even canopy style of growing, probably improves overall bud quality, particularly in terms of bag appeal. I'm also confident that the technique is quite valuable with less intense lighting, putting more growing points & therefore buds in the best possible position to receive light.

Obviously, some strains lend themselves more easily to that, Sadhu apparently one of them.

OTOH, I'm not sure the technique is as valuable with the truly intense lighting of a 1000W bulb in a highly reflective 4'x4' space. With my own limited efforts so far, I've just let 'em grow, flipping to 12/12 when the plants are ~12" tall, 4-5 weeks from seed. Depending on the variety & the individual plant, the lower branches spread out & then up when given adequate space, 6 plants in the enclosure. There's some popcorn way down underneath, but the side shoots yield decent thumb sized & larger head buds that are just as frosty as the whopper top buds.

I like the aesthetics of plants grown that way, and I'm fascinated by the growth habits of different varieties. That's just me, of course. I'd love to be able to grow some Christmas trees in my outdoor vegetable garden.

Any style of growing that works well is a good way, and your plants are doing great, hush. Should give a very bountiful harvest.

I luv how you LST'd them...

It looks like the predator's jaws or somthing from the Avatar jungles on Pandora!

+ Plus now they can concentrate all their energy into the main tops
and stop wasting energy on skiny ''gruffy'' the vampire popcorns buds..

- I hate triming and drying that popcorn shit, good for adding to sugar leaf trim,
in bubble bags for a nice added boost in bub hash quality and yeilds though :)

+ plus better ventilation / lighting
+ no mold problem no cry ehhhya

+ easier to harvest later ( a half hour now saves you an hour a plant later)
- a little stress maybe a slight development stunt depending on strain, eh?

^ You got it, Apache!

Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to grow plants the "natural" way without any training. I would absolutely love to! But unfortunately yield has to take top priority in my garden, at least for now, and I was fairly certain that only 5 sadhu plants would not have filled out the space in there. I can't say for sure, but knowing how little they stretch, and based on the breeder's original description, they mature to be fairly small-ish. So I do think that the idea of all this training is surely strain-dependent. Based on what I know about this cut of Sadhu, I would probably have to have 9 of them in here in order to properly fill the entire space with bud. I actually hope to try this at some point! :D

But next in line for this tent is Lemon Skunk, which also is known to be not the greatest yielder in the world... so in order to maximize yield, I will be LST'ing them just like I did with Sadhu.

For sure, hush. We all have somewhat different goals, needs, and experience. Your grow looks terrific.

Yeah really great work Hush - your plants put me to shame ;)

As for the discussion... It seems like in the end it might actually come down to nuances in quality vs quantity. That is to say; I still believe you might get slightly more overall yield with an unpruned plant, yet ultimately I think you will get more "A-Grade" top cola buds of a better average quality by pruning the lower growth.

I have personally always had a bit of a thing for those little nugs from down low... obviously not if they are fluffy/larfy crap... But if they are small yet dense and frosty, then I think they can be as good, or better than top buds. my :2cents:

Nice job with the chop.

I think if you prune and train your plants growth from the beginning to get it to cover the area fast you can get MUCH more bud than if you grow unpruned plants. Proper training increases the growth in selected areas.

The more you practice pruning/training, the more bud you smoke!

Im seeing around 55-60 main colas in that 4 x 4 space. Thats awesome dude!
How much do you think you will yield in a 4x4 with all those lumens?
Im thinking 1gpw easy...... so Im guessing about 36 ounces.
That would be a nice pull huh.

Wow, dude, that would be a sweet pull! SWEET JEEZUS I HOPE YOU'RE RIGHT!!!!! :D Considering I'm only hoping for 20 ounces, that would be amazing! The only issue is that Sadhu isn't the highest yielding plant out there, so I won't expect too much. But it's not skimpy either, so I'm not sure what to expect.

I must admit, I do believe I'm going to exceed my goal. My new estimate is, I'll say, 25 ounces. 5 oz per plant average.

(I sure hope it's more though!)

:D

Nice work Hush :)
It looks like your patience and tenacity are going to reward you beautifully. I ran a 1k in a 5 x 5 tent the same way you are. AC unit in the window, passively venting through the tent. I exhausted my heat out of the room. Otherwise our set up is very similar...and productive no doubt. Your estimate seems right on too..

your pruning job looks legit. good job. im sure that will save you a ton of larf since you have such a nice dense canopy. they will reward you accordingly. i cant wait to run my 1k in my 5x5 and see what happens. first run with the 1k and im running co2 so im expecting big things out of my AK's

Watching this planning a 3 4x4 tent set up after I move. I was wondering what you thought of 16 plants per 4x4 1k in 5gals?

12" - 5gln square pots. Then you could. 4 rows x 4 rows is 16 pots. It would also have to be done from clone SOG or ScrOG style.

Too many plants in too big pots, imho.

It's strain dependent, but 9 plants in 3 gal pots or #3 nursery pots would pretty much fill the space, even w/o the kind of trimming & such that Hush uses.

Yeah, 9 plants is all I could really see doing in here... and that's only with indica varieties that keep their branches close. Sadhu would fit that description. If I were to grow these plants straight up, no bending over or topping, I think 9 would fill the space.
