Giving vert a try

Decided to get my feet wet with vert growing. Wanted to do the tree method, but space is severely limited so I will be going with vertical screens. I am used to getting 12-14 oz from a 400w light horizontally, so the vert method had better live up to the hype. :)

Light is 400w CMH, but I have a HPS bulb I can change it out for if that would be better. I know that I need them to stretch, and I don't remember what happened the last time my buddy flowered under CMH. I also have some light coming from a 268w led hung just beside and above the area.

I have 2 of orgnkid's banana kush cutting and one agent orange that came from a dispensary in CO. I understand this is only three sides instead of four, but I should be able to get a pretty good estimate of future yields.

What up indianajones...

Always good to see a new show start up and ya got some nice lookers there...

Got a front row seat and really dig watching people figure it out just like the rest of us.. Well.. Most of us...
( We got some kick ass vert guys around these parts)

Looks like your off to a nice start...

Might want to add a fan below that bulb and a trellis on the open side plant would give you 4 walls...

Home Depot has Styrofoam walls 10' x 4' with a reflective side for like $12... Add a wall and cut out a door would be a good 4th side...

ok... That's all I got... :dance013:

Id imagine you'll get some better stuff soon enough..

You'll find Vert if done correctly will blow your old returns out the water...
Have fun with it man... Look like a lot of things possible in that playground of your...
Puff,puff,pass...
I'll be a lurking...
:smoke out:
Rock on...

:abduct:

.

Well this is just the left hand side of my grow, so no wall. I might trellis the plants on the other side to go straight up.

Here is the view from a little further out.

Just a little update. Switching to 12/12 tomorrow. There was a LOT of under growth that I trimmed out when I re-tied them yesterday.

Really minimal stretching going on so far, I guess that is from using a CMH instead of a HPS? Anyone have experience with CMH going vert?

looking good thus far. not trimming enough of the lower crap was a crucial mistake i made on my fist vert scrog. do it and then do it some more lol. im just starting my second and trying to learn as i go

Three weeks flowering, excellent formations so far! Had a couple leaves get too close and get burned,
but only a few. Stretch is finished, one banana is every bit of 5' tall, the other banana and the agent
orange are only about 6" shorter.

IDJ- Welcome to the wonderful world of vert  Good to see another grower running CMH's. I run mine in combination with hps, but definitely noticed reduced stretch over straight hps runs (somewhere around 10-20% reduction).

Now there are some things you need understand about vert to be successful. Most of this can and should be applied to any method of growing, it's just used/thought about differently depending on the plane you are growing, vertical vs. horizontal. First thing, 5ft tall plants are way to large for a 400w anything. The best yield/quality balance in your current setup will come from creating a solid 3-4ft vertical canopy on all four sides of the bulb (check Ichabod's grow for examples of what you want your screen to look like ). You did the right thing removing all that lower growth this time, but in future runs start flowering sooner or better yet train until the screen is 1/2-3/4 full, then flip. The shorter plants will also benefit from the additional side lighting from your horizontal light. Looks like you did a lot of defoilation to those plants during the last update. Normally I'd advise against being that aggressive, especially during the stretch period, but what's done is done. For future reference, the bulk of defoilation should be spread out over the course of at least a week, after the stretch period has ended, and continue until all leaves with a stem are removed up to harvest. Heavy removal in one session will generally stunt your plants, lowering yield. One last thing, get yourself some reflective material on the walls. You are losing crazy amounts of light to that dark wood paneling. Orca film is really good shit. Reflectix, paint with titanium dioxide, and even just primer are all available relatively cheap at home depot. Any of them will easily pay for themselves in added yield.

Good to know on the height, since I removed about 18" of leaves/budsites at the bottom of the
plants. That leaves me with about 3' worth of growth. Thanks for the knowledge on reflective material also,
I was unclear on that and just went bare wall this grow. I haven't seen much of a yield reduction from
agressive defoliation (post-stretch) in my previous grows. I think that training them to the screen during veg
would help, but these are just some ridiculously stretchy phenos. Banana can go 5x easy, which is why I
tried her in vert.

Everything is still going well on the vert side of my garden, filling in quickly for sure.

everything is coming right along, getting so much weight that there is daily tying to the scrog to keep them from sagging. the banana seems to be finishing up pretty quickly, but it is getting light from the LED as well.
