biological filtration refers to the use of large surface area media to provide a medium for beneficial bacteria to colonize, and to accelerate the nitrification process. It is commonly called bio media, bio bale, or something bio in the fish keeping community.

Now I will admit that I am mostly using this from an aqua culture/ponic point of view, namely raising fish or plants or some combination of the two. I am not entirely clear on what role nitrification plays in the chemical interactions that occur over time in your rez.. however I do know that the presence of beneficial bacteria has a direct positive impact on the bacteria that is clinging to the roots of your plants, and its instrumental in preventing slime out breaks. To that matter, its what solved my dwc root slime issues.

This is an issue that has been discussed in depth in other threads, the only one I was able to quickly locate I have linked.

Your not going to believe this but, I have a 150 gallon Aquarium that I made my own DIY biological filter out of a 45gal trash can. The filter builds up this biological mass that the water passes through and has the water goes through the media its cleaned. I clean my media every 3 months and just a quick clean careful to leave some of the mass in there to build up again.
I have kept my tank clean for 4yrs now, and I never bought one single filter. The media that I used is plastic drinking straws cut up into 1/2 inch pieces. I filled a container up with the straws and water flows from the top through the media, out the bottom then pumped back into my tank. Now I know how it can benefit my water rez water, going to work on my bio filter asap. Thanks for the info Derka...

Week 2 in NFT

Week 2 in NFT

Its been two wks in the NFT and the roots are growing toward the end of the gutters. This is fine the roots tend to grow along the gutters and go right into the rez.One thing about this set up is you can always see how the roots are doing anytime you like just look in the rez.

I have been faced with one problem it seems that my PH levels are dropping everyday by 2-4pts its was 6.0 last night and this morning it was 5.6. I checked it again after the light was on for a few hours and its at 5.8. Should I worry? seems to me the PH swing would be a good thing?

pH dropping problem found

pH dropping problem found

This was the problem I hope, For the last week I been fighting a problem in my NFT Gutters the rez was dropping 5pts over night no mater what I did I would just continue to drop. Its been 3wks running, I cleaned the rez lowered the nutes to 1/4 strength , cooled the water to 70-72 degrees, made sure no light got in the rez and changed the water every 3days. Nothing seemed to help, then I was just checking out the root growth and low and behold there it was, all the black mold was on the plastic that is wrapped around the rockwool cube. I should have known better the water was flowing 24/7 and caused this mold to build up. Its not been a full 24hrs since I change the water after I found the mold and the nutes are staying 100% more stable then they have been for the past wk. Just thought I would share the info in case someone is having a problem with their pH going down.

The girls are loving their new home, My NFT is running just fine no problem at all no water chiller being used and no Co2, just keeping it simple and on a budget. Growing for medical use for a friend and I only, not to worried about not using them. Iam sure it would help though. I do have fresh outside air going in at out 24/7 which helps.
