Tom Hills Outdoor Soil Mix...

Saw this a few years back always wanted to try it. Seems like all the things needed for the recipe would be pretty viable here to get in Australia I would think?

Always wanted to do a decent outdoor grow and I have recently been given permission from a friend who has a bit of a large space outdoors to grow a couple of plants there.

Anyways here's a previous post from a member here at IC asking Tom about his recipe for large outdoor plants with his reply:

Hi Jenn,

I've played with a lot of different soil recipes over the years, 1rst year new soil mixes, as well as yearly additives. Here's a very simple mix that is well proven and I am comfortable recommending for those large outdoor containers. It gives about 50 cubic feet or just over 300 gallons (dry U.S), and fills a 6ft diameter container to a depth of about 18inches - perfectly.

25 bags black gold potting soil (1.5cf ea)

4 bags stutzman farms chicken manure (1 cf ea)

1 bag perlite (4 cf ea)

1 bag (50 lbs) bonemeal (steamed, not precipitated)

1/2 bag gypsum (aprox 1/2 cf) - Edit -> 1/2 of a 40 lb bag (20lbs).

Mix well, water thoroughly, let rest for 2-3 weeks minimum, transplant, and stand back

Now I am thinking of getting this all together and as Tom has said let it rest for a couple of weeks and in the mean time get some seeds from the boo by the time I get them I will obviously sprout and find out the sex of the seedlings then transplant which should be just in time with the outdoor growing season here in Oz. What size pots would I need to grow outdoor semi decent outdoor trees in for this mix?

Another dilemma is what type of strain would be good to grow here in Australia. Super silver haze? some kind of Thai cross? Durban cross? any suggestions will be great appreciated and thanks for your time.

Why pots? can you make a bed ? last year I got just short of an elbow from a SSSDH in a 60lt pot with a rich organic mix ,admittedly it taped into the ground through the drain holes but not much, they were pretty fine roots hanging out of the pot so I'm giving most of the credit to the pot ,I regularly get 8-10 oz out of a pot that size growing haze x's ,if you have to move them bigger pots need a trolley or another body to help move em! ,as to what to grow in your nice warm climate, jeez any of Shanti's haze crosses or Cannabiogen and Ace Seeds have a lot of nice offerings ..thats what catches my eye ..this pic is of a Skunk x Haze that isn't a particulary big yield-er but managed about 7 oz + in a 60 lt pot

smart pots have there advantages , i would go 100gal + if you have the room , as for strains , sativa dom. have a read in the growing large plants outdoors thread.

Wall, the growing large plants outdoors thread is gonna take some reading but there is some great advice and knowledge in there thanks for the tip.
might even make my own smart pots if I cant find them here in west oz...

Is that tom hills complete soil recipe?
Am i the only one who finds it odd that no ph buffer is used (dolomite lime) and there is no source of magnesium supplement.
Im trying to find more info about tom hill but it seems his thread here on icmag not only has been closed but every post from him has been removed.

You guys are all confused, Tom Hill is a place. You mix enough soil amendments together to create a large mound. Follow the instructions and, viola, you've created a Tom Hill.

Make more than one and you've got Tom Hills.
