What ever happened to Schlitz beer? It was the biggest selling domestic beer back when I was in high school in the 70's, was what everybody drank in my town.
Here's a story I was told by a guy who picked me up hitchhiking in 1978...dude told me his job was a truck driver, he used to pick up all the used "mash" from the Schlitz breweries and trucked them to pig farms for feed. So, he had some inside info on this. Basically, he said that the Schlitz company had made a large error on how much beer to produce for the upcoming months, made way too much. Schlitz then had to decide whether to eat their mistake and throw away a bunch of beer that had gone past its spoil date. They decided to try to sell it anyway, thinking that people wouldn't notice the off flavor in the old cans of beer. Well, people did notice, and it was enough to send them off to buy some of the competitors products. Schlitz never recovered.
