"Darwinian Fitness is the contribution an individual makes to the gene pool of the next generation relative to the contribution of other individuals." (Campbell & Reece 2002)

Hi and welcome to The Perpetual Darwinian Fitness Center. Here I'll be keeping a diary about my recent growing and amateur breeding efforts. Grow diaries provide so much more detail and information than a simple grow or smoke report. It helps one learn about every aspect of growing simultaneously. Also it's a much greater adventure for the reader being able to follow things in "real-time".
As the title suggests mother phenotypes are constantly competing in my setup. As I only have limited space I can only keep the very best. Which calls for constant vigorous testing to ensure the best selection :smoker:

I'm running a small non-commercial, perpetual setup (I'm both a medical and recreational user, but more on that later) with 2 small grow rooms and one room for flower.

Both growrooms are DP90s (lxdxh=90x60x90). I use one as a mother/father room in which I store my mother plants. The other one is used to root and veg cuttings.

I'm running a DR120 (lxdxh=120x120*200) with a 600w HPS on 12/12. It usually has anywhere between 8 and 16 flowering plants.

picture.php

In this pic all growing plants have been squashed into one room because I'm busy doing maintenance in the other one.

picture.php

Just changed size of pots (6L->12L) and soil mix. The plants suddenly get a lot bigger, exacerbating the height differences.

I took a small break from growing and have restarted my grow around the end of november 2012. The varieties I'm currently running are:
- Buddha's Sister (Soma): seedlings have just sprouted. got these on offer. smoked some a few years ago and loved the taste. So hopefully we'll get some nice phenotypes.
- Crash Test II F2: these were beans gifted to me years ago by IC member Core with which I made a lot of crosses and some F2s. It's a cross between Amnesia Haze and Bogglegum F2.
- La Nina (Mr Nice): I've currently kept 2 phenos (out of 6) of this beautiful exotic sativa.
- Sogouda (Soma): I still have all 5 female phenotypes and 2 males from this run. VERY nice aromas here and very decent highs. A mate suggested this one and boy am I glad he did!

I'll be going more in depth analysis on all strains in subsequent posts.

Not much to say about myself accept that I'm very much a proponent of scientific literacy, skepticism and critical thinking. I'm a very laid back and tolerant person accept in the face of misinformation and bullshit. Leave the woowoo at home and I'm sure you'll have a great time. This line is not meant to start a discussion on the topic, au contraire, this thread is about growing. I'm happy to discuss things over PM or in the toker's den.

Also I have been diagnosed with asperger syndrome (autism spectrum disorder) and a very rare and unkown neurological disorder (sometimes called persistent migraine aura or visual snow syndrome). I use cannabis to ease a lot of symptoms associated with these disorders. Mostly anxiety, appetite, sensory overload, insomnia, depression, OCD,... Amazing this one plant can help me with so many symptoms which otherwise would have to be adressed with expensive pharmaceuticals with lots of negative side effects.
From a recreational point of view taste is my #1 priority (along with effect ofcourse, can't have one without the other). Resin content is also very important (it contains most of the yummy tasting terpenes) and affects the quality of the smoke/vapour A LOT imo.

Might be important too inform you of how I actually get the cannabinoids in my system.
I used to mostly smoke joints with tobacco (very little tobacco though, otherwise it'll ruin the taste and high). Now lately I've been vaporizing a lot more (volcano) and have started to roll pure joints occasionaly. But still need to get used to their taste. After 10 years of smoking with tobacco I still like the tobacco ones better.

When I'm talking about taste and aromas this will be about the general tastes/aromas apparent in all types of inhalation methods unless specified.

Also I'm not a native english speaker but read mostly in english (my scientific vocabulary is actually better in english). So forgive me for any grammatical or spelling mistakes.

Next I'll be going more in depth on the varieties I'm currently running. First up will be the La Nina.

Cheers everyone!

La Nina D

La Nina D

When I restarted the grow back in november I choose a few strains to start my selections. I still had lots of beans lying around from previous grows but was looking for something completely new. So I chose to buy some genetics instead (something which I hadn't done for a long time).
Eventually I started out with 10 Crash Test II F2 (old stock), 10 La Nina (Mr. Nice), 10 Sogouda (Soma Seeds) and 5 gifted feminised Strawberry Haze (Green House Seed Co).
I will be doing reports on all varieties so everyone is up to date. After that the thread will probably unfold more naturally.

I also have not been visually documenting my grow up until now. So I currently only have recent pictures. But will be making lots more along the way.

Also note that I didn't visit these boards for about 5-6 years. So I'm a few years behind when it comes to cannabis growing culture. So I'm not really up to date on new varieties and techniques. Lots of things seems to have changed in this relatively short time period.

La Nina (D) - Mr. Nice

La Nina has always had a high place on my wishlist in the past. And as I like to grow some nice exotic mostly sativa hybrids she didn't look like a bad choice.

The La Nina is a very interesting variety and a beautiful plant. I ended up with 6 females and 4 males. 3 of the females were a bit too sativa leaning so it was very hard to keep an even canopy. These pheno's got HUGE buds though. One which was 77cm in lenght at harvest. Although they weren't too bad, none of them compared to the 2 phenos I've kept. I also kept one male for crossing and F2s. Still have 8 LN beans left as well.

First run I did with this variety I had 4 out of 6 females hermie on me. I was still using my old grow closet back then and it turned out I had a serious light leak. Picked off the balls and was able to save 4 females. Decided to run the other two again next time. The others didn't herm on me.
Eventually I have found 2 phenos I like. Which I like to call the LN-D and LN-E phenos (females get letters, males roman numericals, unsexed numbers).

So it seems these might be a little bit more sensitive to light stress than most. They also seem a little picky when it comes to nitrogen. Only use a little or you'll stall them.

The LN-E pheno was one of the two I culled after they hermed so I ran that one later. Just harvested it last week so I don't have much info on it yet. Altough it seems it will beat the LN-D at least tastewise. Might be stronger too but only smoked 2 testers so far. Not enough to be sure. Yield seems a little smaller.

So for all purposes the rest of this report is focusing on the La Nina D pheno.

picture.php

As you can see this is a tall plant (shortest one I found though) which grow very fast. I will repot a cutting from 0.55L to 12L at around 15-20cm in height and flip to 12/12 the same day.
This is what they look like after 29 days. no additional feeding. 102cm. Still it is the shortest and most manageable phenotype I found so far.

When grown out well, the yield on these plants can be very reasonable.

picture.php

picture.php

The picture above shows LN-D in my old soil mix (too much N) at 55 days of 12/12. They didn't get as big but you can see the yield isn't bad at all. The buds are fluffy but still pack quite some weight. They also seemed to stretch a little less in this soil.

This pheno can be cut at around 12-13 weeks. This is a rather fast pheno as the LN-A, LN-B and LN-C phenos had flowering times of 16, 14 and 15,5 weeks respectively.

Another thing I like is the high calyx/leaf ratio. A joy to trim.

picture.php

La Nina. D phenotype. 55 days of 12/12

The resin coverage is great and very evenly spread. She also start packing resin quite soon into flower.

The smell is rather low during flowering. This one will not stink up the entire house and the smell is less recognizable as cannabis than most plants. In comparison about one Sogouda plant will smell harder than an entire room of La Ninas.
They will lose a lot of aroma/taste when not grown out well. Those and yield will drop dramatically. Wouldn't recommend this strain to a beginner. I think I have her dialed in now I changed soil.

The aroma is quite exotic and special. There are some parts that reminds me of some thai stickweed I smoked years ago. It is very very woody with a tiny fresh hint of something menthol/sour. When broken up a more musky/skunky aroma appears.

I find she needs a little longer to cure for her aromas to come to full potential. But I've noticed that's most often the case with sativas like these.

picture.php

Her potency is very reasonable. I'd give it 8/10.

But the high is probably her best aspect. The only way I can think of to describe it is that she has a very "broad" high. Meaning she covers quite a large part of the spectrum (which doesn't mean the same as a balanced effect). She can be quite psychedelic and electric but at the same time feel quite narcotic and dreamy too. Definitly not clear. A very interesting and enjoyable high but not recommended if you still have important stuff to do.

I'm definitely keeping her around for a while. Also looking forward to test more of her sister.

Did a few pollinations with one of my two Sogouda males today. The most sativa looking of the two. He looks very much like my 2 G13/Haze leaning females. Crossed him with my Crash Test II F2 and made F2s.

Also did some pollinations with a secret side project but can't give much info on that for the moment. But it'll show up in this diary sooner or later ;)

Tomorrow I will be sharing some more info on the Sogoudas.

Haven't found the time to write up on the sogoudas I've got running. I might go with the crash test first because I have 5 sogouda phenos to talk about and only one CT at the moment.

I also did a few more pollinations. I'm currently looking at:
- Crash Test II F2 x Sogouda
- La Nina x Sogouda
- Sogouda F2 (multiple phenos)

- Crash Test II F2 x Secret Male
- Sogouda x Sectret Male

And a small update on the Buddha's Sister seedlings. They currently look very bad. Growing very slow, leaves staying really small and some are deforming as well. They're at 20 days since germination. I bought this pack of the boo at half price so I wasn't expecting too much.
All of them cracked in 24 hours though but one did not show a taproot after 6 days which I then discarded since it was starting to rot.

picture.php

I'm not sure why they are runting so badly. I'm not doing anything different than usual. Haven't heard much good about his seeds lately (especially germination) so I'm not that surprised.
I'm not giving up on them yet though. I've had seeds of my own do the same thing after they were badly stored for some time. For example the Crash Test II F2 seeds I grew out and found my keeper mother in. Most of the seedlings runted very hard in the beginning but grew out of it after 1-2 months and flowered healthy and normally.

Because of this I'm contemplating germing some other seeds in the meanwhile. I still have quite a few beans so it's gonna be hard to choose one. Here's some of the main contenders:
- Ace's Tropical Mix
- Free Tibet (Soma)
- Crash Test F2
- Crash Test II F3
- Crash Test II x La Nina
- Dominatrix II = SSSDH x PeeWee (Core)
- Kushadelic (Soma)
- Nepalese Jam (Ace)
- Original Haze x Skunk #1 (Sam)
- Original Thai Haze x Skunk #1
- Purple Haze Thai (Ace)
- Sogouda x La Nina
- Somango (Soma)
- Unknown Sativa F3 (aka Banana Haze)

If anyone can help me decide the next one please give your opinion :)

Well I started germing 5 Original Haze x Skunk #1 seeds from Sam the Skunkman. Been looking forward to trying these for a while now. Can't really go wrong with genetics like that so very interested in what might come up.

Crash Test II F2

The Crash Test & Crash Test II seeds were gifted to me a couple of years ago by member Core here on the IC boards. The original one was Amnesia Haze x PeeWee (PeeWee = Purple Bastard x White Widow). Crash Test II was Amnesia Haze x Bogglegum F2. I had 3 females of both varieties and all phenotypes were awesome. I made F2s and a bunch of crosses with them.

So last november I started another 5 Crash Test II F2 seeds. I ended up with one female. I got lucky and ended up with a very nice pheno.
Her aroma is incredible, about equal amounts of amnesia and bubblegum. Very sweet and slightly sour as well. One of the tastiest I've had in the last few years. She's my personal favourite for the moment :)

She also grows very nicely. Not picky at all, large leaves, decent yields, nice and compact buds. She also clones the best of all my plants. Can't say anything bad about her in the growing department actually except you'll need good odor control.
She needs at least 12-13 weeks to finish although she may look ready at 10-11.

picture.php

41 days of 12/12

Her potency is great as well (like every Crash Test Pheno I've had so far). At least 8,5/10. Powerful all round high.

I will probably do a test run of the Crash Test II F2 x Sogouda as well after the seeds have matured. The male I used in this cross was a quite sativa leaning one. I'm guessing he will be leaning more towards the G13/Haze side. Really looking forward at what might come up here. A cross between these two super tasty strains is just a party waiting to happen. I will also cross her with my other more indica male.
Still have quite a lot of old Crash Test and Crash Test II crosses laying around as well. Will probably go through some of them sooner or later.

Thanks Kiwi! I'm quite glad with what I've found so far. And it's still early days. Lot's more beans to be tested :)

Though I have yet to do the story of the Strawberry Hazes. Which were the biggest dissapointment since I started growing about 10 years ago.

She looks like shes gonna fox tail too. How many weeks she go? 10?

Boffin

@kiwi_growa: She does foxtail a little but not as much as some others. All of the sogouda phenos go around 12 weeks in my case (one may be considered ready at 11)

@Able Mind: thanks for the heads up!

Maybe it's about time I introduced you to the Sogouda. The Sogouda's genetics are advertised as Cheese, Blueberry & G13/Haze. Sounds tasty doesn't it? Well it is! One of the tastier smokes I've had in the last few years.

I've still got cuts of all the phenotypes I ended up with (A through E + 2 males). Since there was almost no uniformity what so ever I will do them one by one.

These seem to be extra sensitive to hard water it seems. I've been growing with hard water for years and some strains seem to not care while other get limescale buildup very quickly locking out other nutes.
I'm planning on finally buying an RO filter but heard the hardness of the water in my area should drop by half somewhere next year (they installed a new water treatment plant). So I'm not sure if I should just wait (I've been growing with this water for years) and try and tolerate the fact that some of my strains will not do as well for another 6-18 months.

Sogouda A

picture.php

Sogouda A at day 54 of 12/12

This is my least favourite pheno I would say. Although it's the only one that doesn't really stretch much.
She is very sensitive to my hard water issues and starts yellowing to early in flower. Compared to the la ninas, which take all that extra calcium with no problems.
Her aroma is slightly fruity but mostly cheesy and with a metallic hint. Enjoyable but not as good as the others. She does make some tasty hash though.
Like every pheno she needs about 12 weeks of flowering time.
Altough she has a lot less resin than her sisters. She isn't really noticably weaker. She surprises me everytime. Slightly heady but she packs a good punch.

Sogouda B

I don't have a picture of this one for the moment as I don't have a cut in bloom. This pheno resembles the Sogouda D a lot. They are the two most sativa leaning phenotypes. Thin leaves, considerable stretch.
Again 12 weeks is fine but these two phenos can go slightly longer if wanted.
The aroma is a blend between G13/Haze and Cheese and very similar to the Sogouda D pheno. Only this on is much more sour. Very tasty but not exactly what I'm looking for.

Sogouda C

I will try and get some pics of her soon.

Aromatically this one is the best by far. Very very cheesy with some hints of other sweet skunky goodness.
She does stretch a lot and has a very open structure which makes her harder to handle indoors. Actually I'm having a tougher time keeping her under control compared to the La Ninas.
12-13 weeks this one starts packing her weight very late in flower. She always looks the lightest during flowering but eventually when ripe she always yields the best of all my Sogoudas.

Sogouda D

picture.php

Sogouda D at day 33 of 12/12

Very similar to the Sogouda B pheno but even slightly more stretchy and with a less sour aroma. Lots of G13/Haze in this one. Again 12-13 weeks. The high is quite strong and slightly psychedelic.

Sogouda E

picture.php

Sogouda E at 42 days of 12/12

This one is another favourite. She's not as strong or interesting in aroma but boy does she smoke well. She does have the most resin of all the mothers I have for the moment and also has the most compact buds. The high is strong but very smooth and well balanced. I find it very hard describing her aroma. It's a slightly skunky/earthy/cheesy kind of smell. She takes third place in my top 3 at the moment.

picture.php

Sogouda E at 42 days of 12/12

picture.php

Sogouda E at 42 days of 12/12. Already packin some nice resin.

I had great fun growing these out. Lots of variation and interesting genetic background make this a fun one to go pheno hunting. The quality of the smoke of all these 5 phenos was excellent and the aromas are superb.
I never really recommend buying Soma seeds (for a few reasons) but I must say I'm very glad I ran these.
