COMPOST BARREL GARDENING

hello i figured i would document this just in case anyone would like to try this at home
this was pretty easy to make and after watching a video on it i made some adjustments to make it easier

The basic idea is to feed compost down the tube and have worms eat and areate the soil
provideing non stop feeding for the plants ..i figure in a year or so this might be
working real well after things settle out and compost start
Getting the compost out is as easy as pushing it out of the tube at the bottom
close the tube and add more food compost to feed the worms

things needed
55 gallon barrel...$15
drain pipe...$10
caps ...$10
soil ...free from grows
torch..$14 new
hole saw
jig saw
2x4
2 cinder blocks
worms ...$20 lb
compost...free

here are pics of what i have done the barrel isnt all the way full but after a few more
pulls i will have more than enough soil to finish this project also it is good f0r me
to split up the planting
i have alredy planted the bottom with lettuce
i have also added the worm from the worm farm so that process has also started

Very cool project!

After the worms have processed compost and you remove it from the tube, do you add it to the top of the soil in the barrel?

Barrel is looking good. What kinda of sprouts did you plant? what other plants do you have planned for the barrel.

Red wiggler worms are the most common composting worm and they only live in the top 6" or so of soil. I've noticed in my compost pile that red wigglers really don't seem to live in the soil at all if there is material for them to eat. They congregate in that material.

You might try adding some night crawlers. They burrow up to 6 feet down. They they will eat and aerate the soil.
