I tried to take some close up shots but forgot to do the sunglasses trick so there's a lot of HPS lighting leaching onto the plants but you can kinda get an idea of what they're like.
The Doctor:
White Widow:
The far-reds on my LED panel have caused the purple maroc to stretch big time hahaha it's one very leggy looking plant. Still no idea if it's male or female yet ~
Thanks Standsideways I hope your grow goes well too!
Day 49 - (Day 11 Flower)
Bad news ladies and gentleman. I checked all the plants today very carefully to ensure sex of the plants...
The results are in:
Purple maroc is a hermie.... she had pistils and pollen sacks forming. It's easy to identify the pollen sacks as they have a tiny stalk underneath them.
No good to me. She was culled instantly. I was wondering why she was so leggy and this may have been why?
Here she is up close. She ended up getting the chop.
The next plant wasn't hermie but a straight up male! It was one of the doctor plants from green house seeds.
This one had lots of pollen sacks and instantly got culled too. Ain't nobody got time for that
Although it was a healthy looking male... I don't like male doctors... only nurses hahahaha
The 3 plants that did live are:
Female Doctor plant
Female White Widow 1
Female White Widow 2
So then there were 3 at least they got the room to breathe now!
Fed this morning with:
24ml Vitalink Bloom
1 tsp Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate
20mg Carbo Max
PH 5.7 (I'm having Calcium issues so I had to drop the PH down a bit for better Calcium absorption)
The White Widow and The Doctor are now 18" *inches* tall (they were 12" at the 12/12 flipover) the other white widow is 12" tall and a little bit more compact (it was 10" at 12/12 flipover).
I have noticed that even having a small amount of blue light will really help to limit vertical stretch (so full spectrum/dual spectrum bulbs are very good to use for the 12/12 transitional phase if you want to keep them shorter and more compact, failing that any additional supplemental blue light could also work 4000k-6500k, LEDS etc.)
Not too much to report today. I decided to prune the lower 1/3 of the plants to get the plants to divert more of their energy up top for main cola productions.
Today I received the glass panel to fix the air cooled hood. It's nice and big and slotted straight in. Whilst I was there I decided to change bulbs - I put in a 250MH bulb with added orange/red spectrum.
Here is the spectrum analysis for the bulb:
Here's the tent after installing the air cooled hood:
(250MH at the back / LED up front) The 250MH runs very hot but it appears to have more lumens and penetration than the HPS did.. I'm thinking it might do better.
... and here is a happy stem from one of the widows. I cleared up the under growth with a nice prune.
I just found out something interesting. If you feed with tap water. Mix your nutes well and let them sit. After a few hours - adjust your PH, aerate and then feed. You will have a more stable PH level.
What I used to do was just mix nutes, PH down and then feed straight away but have learned that doing it this way my PH would swing 0.4+ within a few hours from feeding. The best thing to do is mix nutes (don't adjust PH) then allow it to settle. The PH will naturally raise again after a few hours. Wait until it has (I wait about 6+ hours) and then adjust PH, aerate mixture and then feed.
This also evaporates most of the chlorine from your tap water as well - better for your beneficials as chlorine can kill them. Just a handy tip I picked up along the way.
The plants seem to be annoyed at me for changing the PH to 6.1 last feed and they showed some minor signs of calcium deficiency. So back to PH 5.8 it goes!
Starting from next week - I will slowly ramp up the P they get during the feeds.
I just noticed that my fan controller has an active red LED on it - and that it's been on in the grow tent for the entire time without me even realising it until today. OOOPS! LOL
I had to tape it so it wouldn't leak out any light... I wish I had spotted this a lot earlier hahaha
Today is a sad day. I woke up this morning to a broken ballast! It won't fire up my lovely HID bulb anymore... *sniff*
The good news is that the LED panel can take over temporarily. The other great news is that I now have a 400w digital ballast on it's way!
It could possibly be a blessing in disguise so I hope it helps out on the yield when it arrives.
Thanks for the encouragement and support fellas this is only a minor set back and may force me to flower for a few extra days to make up for lost ground but in the end it should all be worth while (fingers crossed! haha)
Here they are today on
Day 58 (Day 20 Flower)
The doctor and one of the widows are now 21.5 inches tall. The other shorter widow is standing at 18 inches.
Stretching should slow down to a crawl now and they should start to really fill out more. A 400W would be great to hook up soon and it is due to arrive within a few more days.
The problem at the moment is that the tent temperatures have dropped to a low 20 degrees celsius with RH @ 70% which will slow down their metabolism a fair bit. They should be ok for a few more days until the 400W comes through!
Hi standsideways - the LEDs look better in real life but don't translate that nicely in photos. I have to process them a little in photoshop to reduce the saturation otherwise it looks extremely ugly haha
The new light will bring the temperatures back in line and the plants will be super happy again. I have an air cooled hood to use with it all ready to go - just waiting for the bulb + ballast to arrive ^_^ exciting stuff! I can't wait.
EDIT: The company I bought the ballast from said that they don't have any spare 250w ballasts to exchange for my borked one - so they offered me a $40 discount on the new 400w digital ballast. So the 'upgrade' only cost me $60 for a brand new digital ballast and they also threw in a free 400w HPS bulb for my troubles. Winning!
Not much to report today - except that it's the end of week 3 of flower!
When the digital ballast and bulb comes through I will try to start feeding them daily (at the moment - they get fed every 2nd day)
*plants get rotated on a daily basis*
The doctor is really starting to crank out her trichome production - I have a feeling she may yield slightly better than either of the white widows in the end. We shall see
EDIT: The digital ballast just came in! I haven't yet got the 400w bulb since they split the shipment. So I just hooked up the 250w HPS bulb and used the dimmer to set it to 200w output.
Oh how I've missed HID lighting!
Sorry for the poor pix - I tried to do the best that I could.
Even though the shorter widow is under LED - she is the frostiest of the bunch. She exhibits excellent trichome production and great floral growth compared with the other 2 bigger ladies.
The doctor plant is starting to smell a bit mango like and is starting to frost a little too. White widow 1 although the same height as the doctor has the least amount of trichomes (might be a late bloomer).
