very cool HOPS5K, keep practicing and learn a D chord.

as you practice more and more one day you will suddenly start making chord changes with no delays. it gets fun then !!!

Right on HOPS5K, good on you!

When I give lessons I usually suggest that the student learn the basic chords and open shapes of A-G before they come to me. It makes both of our lives a little easier.

Then it's on to the pentatonic scales.

What kind of guitar did you end up getting? Beware! Buying guitars can turn into an addiction, much like buying genetics. I just picked up my fourth guitar a month ago.. Looking at another as we speak. Craigslist is the best place for cheap, used gear. Ebay is the best place for new stuff, IMHO.

Good luck!

DO NOT, i repeat, DO NOT join a guitar forum, you will start buying gear :D

however, with that said, joining a forum is a great place to find used gear :D

what's fun is just chillin in the garage practicing...any time my fingers need a break, I take a few tokes...or when it gets challenging and I need to regain focus, I take a toke.

It's easy to sit and practice, next thing I know, an hour and a half has gone by and I sound a tad bit better.

easily, one of the best feelings I've ever felt was making a nice sounding F chord last week for the first time...that one is a challenge for a newb...usually when I put down fingers on the 3rd and 4th strings, finger on string 3 will move the 1st two out of place..sometimes I'll be able to adjust it and get it like 1/3 times.

Just keep doin' what your doin' and you'll have that F chord down in no time. I wish I had the resources when I started playing that are on the internet nowadays. Have fun!

I've been playing for 25 years, not pro. Just for fun and the way you're doing it is great BUT, technology has made it better with "Rocksmith" I wish I had it years ago. It will teach you EVERYTHING. You need a few things to start: a guitar that can be plugged in, a computer or game console and the rocksmith game with cable. It's not a toy it's a game that teaches real guitar.

As you are spending time learning each new chord shape reserve a little brain power to learn their spellings. Basic chords only have three notes each so in the key of C The chords would be....... C, Dm, Em, F, G, Am and Bm flat5
The chords are built from every other note of the C scale. So an F chord would be FAC
and a C chord would be CEG
Here is the scale CDEFGAB Here are the spellings CEG DFA EGB FAC GBD ACE BDF

Getting better at jumping both middle fingers from chord to chord...just staying strumming while changing chords as fast and as accurately as I can sounds funny until I actually get the chord.

been practicing an hour or more steady for over 3 weeks..can tell the difference, so it's very encouraging.

thanks for all the tips and positive vibes :)

I am trying to learn Bass, I assume that the GR8 feedback your all giving HOPS will pretty much translate to Learning Electric Bass?I bought a Fender Squire Affinity Jazz Bass starter kit, at a local music store. I really shouldn't have dropped The $300, but Im going through some HEAVY shit ATM, and truly trying to figure out some Rage issues.
I am a Pisces/Aries Guy.
My nature is to Chill, butt The Aires in me makes Me Rage over small SHIT.
I have always loved the Bass lines in any style music.
So in My search for solice, I looked back, and remered a couple old lost friends who found the peace I seek in strumming a guitar.
It makes me fade into the soft/slow place I need to go.
No lessons yet, Just HOURS of walking, picking, poping and slaping.

If ya don't mind, im going to hang out and learn w/you HOPS.

PEACE;1TT

sweet, TwistedTrucker is going to learn along too :)

I've actually got a lesson tonight, think she's going to teach me a new chord... D most likely from looking at the song for this week.

Okay, is there any reason not to smoke weed while playing guitar? It's the best when you're practicing and start to get frustrated with a chord or something, to just take a few tokes, relax the hand and start over.

The store where I bought My Bass, has practice rooms, and independent teachers avail.
$20 1/2hr. lesson.
For now even that is more than I can spare.
This kit came with a DVD "getting started with your fender Bass. I need to move my amp to the TV room. It would probably be a good place to start. Heheh.

I am sure during the lesson There wont be any burning.
But I know I smoke less weed when I am plucking around.

I am also 33weeks into a 50 week program to become an Electrician, so I am really flogging the brain with that.
I will have My Bass the rest of My life, so no hurries, and no worries.

Thanks for welcoming Me in HOPS5K.

PEACE; 1TT

you know what is going to be fun? going up in the mountains and playing guitar. Just take a few days to relax in the great outdoors and play songs.

yeah, guitar lessons can be costly..but it's probably better to learn from someone who can guide you and teach you in between your practices. practicing every day so the lessons don't go to waste.

one of these days, I'm gonna find another cute lass and serenade her with a song, LOL :)

learn claptons wonderful tonight, grab and acoustic, sit by the camp fire, play and sing it. panties will drop :D

really easy too... not exactly a beginner song. strum it first and work your way into the picking later. C, D, G, with the occasional Em

check it out. don't worry about the lead in the tabs, just work on strumming the chords to start. eventually you can learn the lead and to pick the entire song while using the above mentioned chords.

http://tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/e/eric_clapton/wonderful_tonight_ver4_tab.htm

and smoke up. helps me concentrate more. :bongsmi:

Put mine away and forgot about it 3 or 4 years ago, but have been thinking about picking it back up again lately. I was listening to the Highway 61 Revisited version of Desolation Row tonight and that's really got me wanting to start again. I just love the guitar in that song.

Anyone ever use the books Fretboard logic? I've got those lying around somewhere. My problem was I always wanted to learn songs instead of how to really play.
