I'm willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, Maina. Although you specifically mentioned BHO and shatter, you probably just wanted to know if it could be used to make hash oleoresin in general. Yes it can but there are safer, more selective solvents and there's no need to use it when your friend can get whatever he wants. Good luck.

The best things are butane and isopropyl alcohol. There's a reason why those are the 2 most commonly used solvents. From that product, he can use his chemistry skills to refine further, using non polar solvents and fractional distillation.

ya N-butane is the same as butane, most just leave out the N. N stands for normal.

When buying from gas supply companies it usually comes in commerically pure (cp) grade 99% pure, instrument grade at 99.5% pure and research grade at 99.99% pure

N-butane doesn't come in food grade. N-hexane does because it's boiling point is very close to that of benzene and certain other aromatic hydrocarbons. These are highly toxic, so they must be removed to make the hexane food grade. N-butane comes in varying degrees of purity. You can tell him to get the purest N-butane available, which is usually somewhere in the order of >99.99%. If he's on a tight budget then 99% will do.

We use 99.5% Instrument grade n-Butane. The half a percent impurities are typically Iso-Butane and Propane, which are relatively non-toxic as well.
