Garlic scapes

Garlic scapes

Indicator that garlic is maturing toward harvest..."scapes"

It's argued that scapes inhibit bulb growth...while I've heard it argued that they don't. I wait until they are 10-12" long...then cut them off with scissors...good for cooking in soups or stir fries...and don't worry whether or not..they inhibit bulb growth

These came off a patch of Erik's German Whites (planted in October)...and so begins the float down into harvest. I'll be cutting these off other patches over the next week or so (depending on variety)

If you have never grown your own garlic...and if you dig connoisseur
level flavors in your foods....listen to me...order yourself some quality bulbs at the end of summer...plant them in fall...and begin the Garlic Journey

Simple to grow...simple to maintain...and miles ahead of the shit you'll find in any commercial processed conglomerate (CPC). The differences can be compared to smoking top shelf high grade cannabis or smoking bottom grade ditch weed. I urge you...try it and see if I'm bullshitting

seeds are just weird like that sometimes,i have the shittiest luck at times, other times its seems i couldnt kill them if i tried....

A Bed Going into Sunset

A Bed Going into Sunset

Used this bed all through the winter...growing chard, beets, carrots, lettuce, and (using 1/2 the bed) garlic. Sometime in March I pulled everything but the garlic...amended the soil...turned it over...and in the 1st week of April...replanted with chards, spinach, peas, lettuces, arugula, and golden beets

All frost tolerant..yes...but the cold slows them down..and burns some leaf tips...soooo...this evening I went in and cleaned the plants up...cutting away burned leaves..weeding..turning the medium over etc.

Cold snaps cost me production...but plants like this are always around the property...in one patch or another...the trick of the tail...being to plant many...plant often..plant in multiple locations...and there should always be some to harvest

Once I harvest the 1/2 of bed with the garlic in it...I'll do the same thing as the other 1/2...amend, turn over, air out, and replant with summer plants. Rifling through beds like this...as a tactic...can be dangerous...as it never gets much of a break..and you risk soil born plant diseases.

For these quick amendments...I like to use glacial rock dust, kelp, and my own pit made compost. Adding amendments regularly is the way to go imo...gradual infusions of different things...along with adding in big chunk (#4 I think) perlite..keeps things loamy and nutrient rich.

I guess then...I'd say...my "quick amendments" are really not that....it's just that...when I'm revamping an area like this..to do a quick turn around...I add more at once.

Do you germinate/harvest according to the moon?

Not ordinarily. It's more out of necessity...or when space opens...as my summer season goes by quick..I push to maximize. Following moon charts is cool and all...but I don't think it buys you much..in the scheme of things.

night temps and soil temps are more important than following the moon imo....if your soil is warm and nights don't freeze...everything grows well

Without getting to "out there" and giving my two cents on the whole moon thing...

I don't live by it - BUT - at times I make note of having and exceptionally good cloning session or germination session. More often than not, it happens to be within the full moon phase / cycle of the things...

When I remember to do so - and my schedule sort of lines up for it, within a week or so, I will go ahead and plant according to moon cycle.

The way I see it - if the moon can affect the oceans tide, surely it can affect roots...I mean, in some sort of way, it is ALL connected, right?

I think you are right about environment being MORE important, yes...definitely...however, I would not (do not) discredit the random possibilities of things beyond my understanding - especially given the fact I have noticed marked improvement in root health myself...so, take it for what you will - I tend to buy into the whole moon phase thing, personally.

Agree...not saying the moon pull on gravity is of no consequence to plants and tides etc...I know I don't sleep well toward the peak of a waxing into full moon....but push comes to shove

where the moon is in its cycle...won't make your plants grow any better..if the environmental conditions are not there. Indoors...I can't tell the difference...never even think...to base germinating or harvesting on where the moon is...because environment is stabilized for growing cannabis.

Outdoors I know this: when the soil is warm...and when the nights don't freeze...almost any veggie/plant thrives...given sun and water. If that falls in line with the moon cycle..and what I want to plant..sure...probably optimum conditions. Can't wait on it though.

Perfect conditions...outdoors..are few and far between most the time where I live. If I waited on them...nothing much would get grown. Hell...if I waited on rain...nothing would get grown...or in unamended local soil (decomposing granite) things would slow down....gardening is about manipulation sometimes.

1000' below me (15 or so miles)...they grow year round without too much need for greenhouses...and grow things I can't grow here.

Great to see you bro...told you I'd be back. No pit this year...but I found a few volunteers...popping out of the earth..and one was just tougher than the others...ripped it out (7-10" tall plant) and stuck it in a hole..in a better location. topped it...wasn't nice to it...it went into shock...lost leaves...but has revived since. Probably a male...tough one...been through a few frostings...lots of wind...and that mean transplant

See what happens.....maybe it'll be a tough chick

Scrub

Scrub

couple shots of the volunteer

As I said above...don't know its sex..but I find most of the tougher plants..end up males. When I transplanted this plant....want to say a week ago...I literally ripped it out of the ground...carried it a few feet...then put it in...a quickly devised hole.

at this time..commenced to rip it a part...pinching the tops and its branches....by the end of the session it was wilted...in shock...looking at death's door. Gave it some water off the hose...and left it to live or die for several days

Came back and saw that the plant...as beat down..as it was...showed the flame of life. My gardener senses took over...trimmed it up of its dead leaves...ringed around its base in order to add worm castings...gave it a good soak

I have no plans for it..one way...or the other

60 Day Sample

60 Day Sample

Cut off a lower branch...the sample belonged to the fastest flowering Mox Mox sister

perhaps...it is...there is..a flattering dose of Original Flo in the expression...a quicker finish...tad bit in the flowers...a small sense of blush...and the bronze glow Blues sometimes get...can be seen in (maybe not in these pix) the live plant's demeanor to color

aromas? perfumed baby poo???.....for sure can whiff the DD influences...though I'll pass on any further descriptions..until the final harvest window

Sweet ass girl..not at the top of the grow...but fine...all the same. I'm craving this run of Mox Mox....every time I see them...I get stoked

Running Tea

Running Tea

Summer is coming in. Running...what I consider...the 1st heat run of the summer season. I'm not carrying water with me these days...quit doing that when?...about 9 or 10 months ago...no water belt or camelback...nothing...shorts, socks, shoes, and a torn wife beater wrapped around the head

I've conditioned myself to go 15 miles on hot days (85-100 degrees)....10 miles on scorch days (triple digit days)...without the aid of supplemental water or anything like that...no gels..

hydration...job #1...heat kills quick and ugly. The key to hydration is: always be hydrated...and be hydrated within the body's optimum pH range. Hydration at all times...it does no good to hydrate just before a run...you must stay constant...a step ahead at all times

Yerba Matte tea, 2 tablespoons of Chia seed, organic maple syrup/organic buckwheat honey, and high end organic almond milk (not the box stuff..this stuff comes in a glass bottle..spoils within a week..fucking killer)

Sipping this..along with a qt mason jar of water with lemons floating in it. I counter the sucrose acid with the lemon base...that's how I play with my sugar addiction...how I counter the honey and maple syrup..my hummingbird soul must crave so deeply. I'm a pH accountant...cooking the books

So it's a melty kind of a run today. Vaporize a bunch of that 112 day RKM...leave out my front door...follow the trail into clear blue sky...steer around the burning sun...focus my self on breathing...coat the body in a second skin of sweat...run my guts out

...I'm not doctoring the photos...you should be able to see her desire to show reds.
That's so funny.
I think people just had a big, long,...(lol), ' time' with me using the word 'red' in describing the nature of the thing that was in front of me and inside the genes.
...Grapefruit????? Isn't nycd somewhat grapefruity?
Then there's spg from steve with grapefruit? Hmmmm.
Interesting nonetheless.
Hey, ...thx for running a test like this.
-You're a great guy.
I love running on weed.
I was once gonna pop some blotter and try to win the city race, never did, but almost did do it. Shit, I'd be the for sure dead guy if I kept thinking of crap to do like that anymore. I was also dropping every week though, so my rational was kinda warped.
But I understand the thrill to experience great runs, I just don't anymore. Short bursts of aa couple minutes...omg....I'm turning lazy.
