Great looking plant. Might I inquire as to specifically what you did to maintain such an even canopy?

She has been a plant that I've been messing with for months. She was cloned from a flowering plant and has always been quite bushy. I chose her because she naturally topped herself once and I thought I should keep that going.
She has been transplanted 4 times so far. She started out in a dixie cup and was transplanted to a 1 gallon smartpot. When I transplanted her I covered her about 3/4 of the way with soil. So she started out looking like a "Y" and ended up like this "\ /".
I had a little case of the spider mites back in the day. Being bushy and trying to spray every leaf, top and bottom, was becoming difficult. So to see what she could take I chopped about 3/4 of her off(I grabbed all the branches and held them together cutting straight across). At that point I kept up the IPM and never saw a spider mite on her again and she flourished after about a week.
After the heavy topping she really started to put out new growth at a fast pace. After about 2-3 weeks in the 1 gallon smartpot, I transplanted to a 5 gallon. And I continued to veg for another 2-3 weeks before transplanting to a 10 gallon and repeating the process until I put her in a 20 gallon smartpot which is her final home.
At every transplant I would trim the bottom 4 inches off every branch that was coming out of the soil. Once trimmed, I would transplant to the new container and bury the plant up to where I stopped taking off leaves.
Eventually, the plant coming out of the ground will not have a central stalk. There are about 8-10 branches coming out of the ground and splitting to make the canopy you see.
To finally answer your question about the canopy, a lot of training. I use smartpots because I can easily train a plant using some velcro strips which stick to the smartpot. If I see one along the edges growing too tall I'll pull it back so it's even with the others. The ones in the center of the pot are usually a bit more of a pain. You could keep them level by topping them or, do what I do and just pinch the stem a few inches below the top and make her fall over.
***Note: Some smartpots, especially new ones you just bought, may have to be flipped inside out for the velcro to stick***
Here is a picture at 'ground level'. There is a lot of crap going on down there but you should be able to see the branches coming out of the ground going in every direction. It's been fun.

Thanks for sharing! You put a lot of effort into that plant, haha. I'm growing two plants in a small area under fluorescents, and thus I'm looking at ways to keep the canopies relatively even. I've never attempted any training, so it will be a new experience for me.
