Could Marijuana Help in Weight Loss?

In a stunning look at the medicinal properties of marijuana use, a study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology has found that obesity rates are lowered by roughly one third in those who smoke three times weekly. The research included 52,000 participants, with findings concluding that 22% of those who did not smoke marijuana were obese, compared with just 14% of the regular marijuana smokers.

The “munchies” (increase in appetite after smoking marijuana) are very real. Just ask anyone who smokes marijuana on a regular basis. It’s this “benefit” of increased appetite that makes marijuana an effective treatment for people suffering from the lack of appetite so common with cancer, AIDS, and other diseases. So, how could any study find that marijuana smokers are less likely to be obese?

Two surveys were analyzed for the American Journal of Epidemiology study. Each showed that pot smokers were less likely to be obese. But, before you try and track down marijuana for your next weight loss cure, read on.

It works as an appetite suppressant for me... I've been smoking on and off for 30 years but switched from 6-12 beers a day to strictly weed... I still love beer but can't drink it because of blood sugar issues...

Now, my weight lose could be from not consuming all of those calories every day, I wasn't a light beer guy, I loved stouts and craft beers... I lost 25 lbs the first year I quit drinking and started smoking daily... plus it replaced my anxiety & ADD meds... I feel so much healthier and the difference when i wake up is amazing...

One more thing, I smoke during the day but I really don't smoke to get stoned... I'll take a 3-4 hits from a ONE-HITTER in the morning, 3-4 after work and 3-4 at night...so, maybe 12 hits from a one-hitter a day... Keeps me more sane than Xanax as well!

I guess that besides weight loss it help cure my alcoholism as well... Someday, I wish that my state becomes a medicinal state!

Some chronic users like myself probably get anti-munchies like johnny is saying.

You ever get so hungry you have a bit of a stomach ache? I smoke in the morning when I'm hungry and then have to force myself to eat because I'm past the point of even being hungry.

When I started drinking heavy craft beers I put on the pounds, though.

Yes, I usually have those hunger pains in the morning, when I smoke they go away and I do have to force myself to eat... thats why I don't take a couple hits at lunch...

I am the same way.

Also worth noting is THC-V has been investigated as a weight loss/appetite suppressant.

I do prefer to smoke a lot of sativas. I still get the munchies too, but not all the time.

Also it's not necessarily as simple as calorie consumption as marijuana has a lot of unknown/explored effects. It could be a metabolism booster.

I lost 80 pounds, shit idk now, 3 years ago. I had gall stones that were like razors and they pulverized my gall bladder. And way because of the holes in my gall bladder it leaked bile into my body cavity and then it caused pancreatitis. Long story short, i was yold to limit my fat intake but said fuck you and still continue to use s half pkg. of Philly on my bagel :D. Needless to say i ballooned up for 2 years, put on 60 lbs and lost 80. It was strictly non stop dabs of iso winterized sage oil and gatorade mixed 1:1 w water.

I definitely gained weight from cannabis use but I have chronic GI problems that would normally keep me from eating so it is possibly just a result of being able to eat normally again.

Im pretty sure there was a medicament based on cannabinoids that was being used for weight loss.
Not sure and im too lazy to look it up but i think it was called rimonabant or somthin like that.
As far as i remember its usewas forbidden because a few pacient with massive excess weight did suicide because of the psychoactive effects of the medicament.
The question is was it really the cannabinoid medicament that made them suicide or the social circumstances they were living in, possibly caused by their overweight ?

We can all get carb cravings and whatnot in our sober lives, perhaps the training to overcome munchies also helps up curb these cravings.

big pharma put out a research weight loss drug that worked on the cannabinoid system... with the idea that if stimulating the receptors gives us "the munchies" as a side effect then blocking the receptors should reduce hunger and therefore lead to weightless... what research scientist found out and the conclusion of the study was that compared to a placebo a large percentage of subjects lost weight but also many contracted various forms of cancer... (another illustration how endo-cannabinoid up regulation plays a significant role in tumor suppression)...

conversely...

there is a brand new over the counter dietary supplement on the market designed to INCREASE appetite and help people GAIN WEIGHT... guess what it is called??? :bigeye: bigeye: Cb1! LOL, I wonder where there they got the idea for this supplement?

I've understood that Sativa increases appetite, and Indica decreases it.

I know, for myself, that I'm a lot calmer when I'm medicated, I don't eat nearly as often, and also, Cortisol, the stress hormone, blocks weight loss. Cortisol makes you fat.

So, what reduces stress, and its hormones? hmmm... lemme think....

Weed doesn't make you gain/lose weight--
Activity/Inactivity does--
I have, for most of my life been thin, but fit-- Then, when I started growing weed full time, I had more down time...so several years later...here I am with a gut!! Fuck!!
So yeah!! I am not a lazy ass who got fat from the munchies!! I got my gut from not keeping myself active!! Fuck you http://www.free-tv-video-online.me/internet/... your demonic TV Shows have ruined my health!!

Abstract

Background

There are limited data regarding the relationship between cannabinoids and metabolic processes. Epidemiologic studies have found lower prevalence rates of obesity and diabetes mellitus in marijuana users compared with people who have never used marijuana, suggesting a relationship between cannabinoids and peripheral metabolic processes. To date, no study has investigated the relationship between marijuana use and fasting insulin, glucose, and insulin resistance.

Methods

We included 4657 adult men and women from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2005 to 2010. Marijuana use was assessed by self-report in a private room. Fasting insulin and glucose were measured via blood samples after a 9-hour fast, and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated to evaluate insulin resistance. Associations were estimated using multiple linear regression, accounting for survey design and adjusting for potential confounders.

Results

Of the participants in our study sample, 579 were current marijuana users and 1975 were past users. In multivariable adjusted models, current marijuana use was associated with 16% lower fasting insulin levels (95% confidence interval [CI], −26, −6) and 17% lower HOMA-IR (95% CI, −27, −6). We found significant associations between marijuana use and smaller waist circumferences. Among current users, we found no significant dose-response.

Conclusions

We found that marijuana use was associated with lower levels of fasting insulin and HOMA-IR, and smaller waist circumference.

Haha this makes me laugh because I had a friend in high school that used to tell me weed makes you lose weight because when you get the munchies it is your metabolism increasing. So therefore if you dont eat when you have the munchies your burning more fat. I thought he had smoked himself retarded, but maybe he was right?

I can vouch for heavy use and weight loss.

In high doses i think that cannabis has great potential as an appetite suppressant and for treating alcohol problems.

Back in 2005, I smoked nonstop from February 22nd to mid April, and in that about 2 month period I went from 230lbs to 173lbs!! So yes, the right strain of Cannabis can make you lose weight, even do so in a rather short period of time if it does help you as an individual to begin with, im sure not all will acquire the same miraculous results I once did, but the process is beginning to repeat itself starting about one month ago!! :smoweed:

New reports are being produced which show cannabis can lower blood-sugar over time. More great news!

This is a great thread! I have often felt like I'm the only stoner in the world who gets anti-munchies when stoned, lol. Threads like this remind me I'm not alone. I really think it boils down to people being regular users. For whatever reason, when you are a regular user of cannabis, it actually has appetite-suppressive properties. As others have already said, smoking a bowl in the morning makes the breakfast hunger go right away! Also, most of us have learned by now that eating food, at any time of the day, is a buzzkill. No matter how stoned we are prior to eating, once we force that food down the throat, the high is gone.

I am a stay-high, regular smoker. I am relatively healthy, in relative good shape, I eat properly sized meals, and I weigh a buck-forty... consistently! Granted, I've been skinny my whole life, so now as a grown adult man, it's not too surprising, but everyone always told me, "Don't worry, in your 30s your metabolism will slow down and you'll put on a gut... don't worry!" Well here I am in my late 30s, and now people around me are telling me, "Don't worry, in your 40s your metabolism will slow down and you'll put on a gut..."

LOL
