what's the best way to re-use the old soil from previous grows..
imo
it really depends on many variables
i would think for most, its the practices used during the previous run & wen developing the soil...
feeding the plant, peat based mixs, super media amending, bottle formula approach too endless diverse mulching,ACT,biochar,compost/casting based soil & so on

heres an example of a no-till 15gal container
DSC00844.JPG DSC00845.JPG
seed was planted right in the mulch

here are more no-tills just that we T-planted some starters in
(mater,zucchini,beans,greens,etc )
DSC00853.JPG DSC00855.JPG DSC00854.JPG

& here we have some seedlings
germed in peat/grit & T-planted to 100% recycled soil..
DSC00843.JPG DSC00839.JPG DSC00840.JPG
method & results were the same but with soo many containers of rich soil & bio-accumulating plants thriving, this recycling method helps with much needed space.

dumping many into LrG batchs along with putting good use too the tons of organic matter & cured compost,a ecological urban garden tend to reap..large smart pots, fennel greek/buckwheat cover & proper irrigation is how i role

i practice a combination of these methods where if a pot doesnt perform it goes back into the mix as method 2 ALL pots which perform as expected remain no-till until such time as that changes

That's exactly the approach i take xmo - the older (mature?) my soil gets the 'longer' it seems to last, 5gal or smaller I never get more than 3 cycles out of - 15 gal and larger are going for up to a year - 45gal...well I may just never have to disturb the soil in these ;)

Needless to say, less and less goes back to the 'pet soil' as a whole, which equals less back breaking soil mixing - always a good thing!

do any of you guys know WTH this is?

it grows on top of wood chip pile that i have in my back yard

if you look dead center and 1/3 of the way down from the top you will see a change that happened in about 2 minutes .........

it looks like someone is inside the thing with a can of spray foam making it grow. it's cool as hell:)

B

BlueJayWay

Eeewwwwwww its foaming from the earth - is that a dead bird towards the bottom middle that this mass is consuming? Prob just looks like it lol - gnarly dude

D

Durdy

Spread it on your toast to achieve super powers!

don't spread it on your toast :p

G

:biggrin:no dead birds ........ but if you watch the stuff for a while it looks like it would eat that too. this is the first time i ever noticed the stuff actually growing. i think i will pay more attention from now on

it's on a pile of blue spruce chips about 3 feet deep ....... with grass clippings and comfrey and nettle and sunflower stalks and every other "green" that i could mix into the mess last summer.

i'm going to be mulching everything i can with it this year.

GM that same looking stuff grows at the park down the road. It covers the wood chip mulch the city put down.... must be something about wood chips.

Looks like a slime mold, possibly Dog Vomit Slime Mold

and we have a winner!

the first time i saw the stuff i thought it was dog vomit

but it sounds cooler when you start reading about it and find out it is actually a plasmodium of a myxcomycete and could even be physarum polycephalum:biggrin:

..... and there ARE some really cool pics out there (most of which i am to e-tarded to cut and paste) like these http://www.pbs.org/newshour/multimedia/slimemoldsfinal/5.html
