1 bag of 7133 done 11 more to go

1 bag of 7133 done 11 more to go

What a pain in the balls prepping this shit, I'm going to find a better way before doing any more.

I scoop a couple cups into this collander/bucket combo then do the twist as an initial screening.

Then into this framed screen over a 33 gallon Roughneck tote, I was working it back and forth initially then I started lifting one end and using it like a slide. Just keep scooping from the bottom and dropping at the top.

Then into a bucket or tub to be washed... Just run the hose, the media stays at the bottom... stir it up to release all the little bullshit.

This is what's left in the 33 gallonn tote that catches my fines.

Final product.

Is there any use for the fines?

I tested a sample at 33% air porosity... I'm going to take a few more samples to be sure.

I had several of my current PPKs not draining tonight, coco has quickly become my least favorite thing in the world.

the ball field arcillite is shipped cleaner than the auto parts stuff. i got 7.5 gals usable from a 50 lb bag and it is a lot easier to wash to the clear point.

so the yield per volume is greater with the turface but the price per usable gal is higher.

i can clean a bag of turface ready to go in one hour.

the whole process needs to be mechanized with a rotary sieve and a recirculating tank of water with a particle filter.

it would be cool to just walk up to a machine and throw a bag in one end and load your grow container from a hopper at the other.

man, i just realized how little you can sift at a time in that colander. you are working yourself to death.

in the slide photo at the bottom of the slide you can see the catch container. it's just a 2'x4' frame with a piece of fencing wire stapled to the bottom. then it's lined with a 36 x 84 piece of the aluminum screen. this is just a regular door size roll from lowes. i don't attach it. it is significantly oversize for the frame and hangs off all around.

before the slide was built that was all i used. you can take a gal pitcher full of material and roll it back and forth in the screen. it only takes a couple of minutes each gal.

editing to add that maybe you just like doing the twist for nine hours at a time and if that's the case just disregard all the above.

I may be building a better mouse trap soon.... for the time being I will be setting up an eight foot slide in my extra room. (plastic sheeting down first of course). I have no plans to process another pound of 7133 the way I did the first bag.

The start of a better mouse trap.

The start of a better mouse trap.

... or reinventing the wheel.

This is a teaser pic... I'll post the whole build once I'm done, might take a couple days.

Nice! I like this! I have a rotary motor and 55gal drums laying around! Maybe one day I'll have the time to build something like what you're doing.

I'm pretty sure I posted this link in 1 of D9's older threads.

I used to use a corn burning stove to heat my old house, and used to but bulk (shelled) corn direct from a farmer. Altho that corn can be used "strait" it really should be cleaned first. I mounted one of these units to a 55 gal drum (with a toilet flange). With a 5 hp shop vac, I was able to unload about 2500 lbs of corn in about 90 min. Had a buddy make one out of PVC fittings after checking mine out. His worked just as well.

There is a small piece of hardware cloth inside the unit and it would be pretty easy to attach a piece of alluminum screen to the hardware cloth. Maybe sew it on with some fishing line?

There are youtube vids of these units in action (cleaning corn).

I'm currntly handwatering soil while I get the "above ground" enviornment dialed in my new rooms, and have had every intention of building a "cascading" bio-bucket type system, but I'm now second guessing that decision and strongly concidering going PPK.

If I do, you can bet I'll be using a corn vac to clean the turface.

Second attempt it's interesting reading through your thread, I had a lot of the same problems with coco in my ppks. I've switched to turface as well. Can't wait to see your 55 gallon drum screener.

This idea is great. I'm thinking I'll pick one of these up. Screening turface is one of the most labor intensive tasks for those of us with small prep spaces.

This is how I will be processing my media. It's not elegant, but should prove quite functional.

Still powered by hand but definitely should be more efficient... there's a trap door not in the pics... throw a bag or two in, seal it up and spin it, collect the fines in a bin below, change out bin open up and collect usable media. Easy Peasy.
