Anyone know where to buy loose carbon?

Does anyone know where to buy loose carbon in the states that is made for air filtration? The only place I run into it is on ebay and most of that is made for water purification.. I never seem to see it at online grow shops and was wondering if I'm just missing some major carbon warehouse(Calgon directly only sells huge amounts).. My buddy found some a few years ago on Ebay that was bought it in bulk from some auction and he just cut a hole out of his filter with a dremel, emptied it and put the new stuff back in and it worked like new.. I guess people must not do this often?

Thanks

Try to find a place that sells equipment to the restoration industry: Phoenix brand HEPA scrubbers have an optional "re-usable" carbon filter. The carbon comes in 5 gal pales, but here's the best part. It's mixed with potassium permanganate which absorbs organic odors; as the carbon/permanganate mixture absorbs odor, it changes color, so you will know exactly when its done. Costs about 90-100 USD per pale. Had to wait a bit to get it deliver however.

Believe it or not, I bought loose carbon at Walmart! That was 2 years ago, don't know if they still carry it. Another place to look is pet stores.

i bought the the 33 or 35 lb bag bulk from the hydro shops for like 120. its coconut fiber. worked well i get about 30 days out of 12 -15 lbs of it. i use vaportek which is pricey but easier to get. either way. hope this helps.

Ive used pet store activated carbon also, never had a problem with it. All depends on how much you need, but I dont see why a local grow shop wouldnt have the stuff also.

^^ you'd think so but for some reason whenever go to the local hydro store they never have and try to talk me into buying a scrubber. i always reply hell no I can make my own for a quarter of the cost. the pet supply store by me actually carries in 2 gallon buckets.

that sucks that they try to make you buy a scrubber. The two shops i deal with will bring in a 50lbs bag of carbon when we ask.

I have a new MountainAir filter (8"x40") that is refillable. I had some info somewhere about where to get carbon and how to do a proper compaction/vibration refill: MountainAir carbon filter refill instructions

The Can filters say they use a proprietary method of compaction and recommend getting a new filter instead.

If you're interested in carbon bed thickness, the Can-Lite is 2.5 inches and I think they use the R-48 Australian activated carbon. Many filter makers don't even have 2" bed thickness, giving you an idea of how long they last (1-3 years depending on make & brand). The Can (heavy) filters still are supposed to last longer than the Can-Lites.

I've looked at this off and on for a while. I'm thinking that it would just be cheaper to get a new filter.
