White Berry Kush Hydro Black Dog LED Platinum XL-U vs 1000 watt HID

I'm liking the side by side comparison. I don't think i've ever seen one before, so it is cool to see it happen in person. And this white berry kush is some of the best i've smelled during a grow in progress.

Thanks for checking out my grow, everyone.

@oneshot: I knew that was happening, but i didn't know what they were gonna do... awesome video! Nice work on your youtube channel, too.

@greenbox88: I posted a picture in the killawatt thread with the wattage of my platinum. Here it is...

WHen i plug in the 1000 watt HPS to the same killawatt, it comes out around 1120-1180 watts. So i'm calling it a 400 watt difference.

Thanks!

I am actually considering 10 of the BD750's for my warehouse when I get out to WA. That would give me about 8k of LED watts to play with. Should be fun. Only a few more months :)

Hell yeah! Props to 40AmpsToFreedom for the White Berry Kush, I have some going now and love the strain, was also looking more into LED lately as I need another 1000 or 2..... Thanks for posting all the photos.

It’s week 10, a week into flushing. Both sides look evenly matched with weights, with the LED side almost looking like it’s pulling ahead. I might be biased because i want LED to work, but we’ll find out soon.

I don’t think i need to tell you which pictures are of which side anymore.

Some macros in real color to give you an idea of nug quality. It’s hard to tell with the lights on, especially the LED. (the first is HPS, second is LED).

Some under the lights.

Here are some killawatt pics to clear up the wattage information for the HPS side. The first is for the HPS light, the second is for the canfan. I had to duct out the HPS with the canfan to keep the area cool enough to grow. You can see the total wattage is 1168. This is how i got the 400 watt difference between the HPS and LED lights. Also, i haven’t included the wattage of the other fans in the room because i consider those to be dealing with the heat put out by both lights.

its kinda looking like the HID side might have some weight going on but; @ 1/2 again the wattage plus/it sure ought to

idk defo gonna be a call for the scale

Here’s week 11, last week of flushing. I’ll start taking plants down sunday to trim. I have a busy week coming up so it will probably take me most of next week to get everything done. 20 plants is a lot to trim up.

Another image to go with the last post

Some close-ups from the LED side, showing signs of flushing.

This has been a cool experiment, nice to see how the plants grow under the Black Dog LED light vs the Hortilux HPS. I’ve tried to keep everything beside the lights consistent on both sides of the experiment, i guess the only thing i would change was that i could keep the temps and humidity exactly the same on both sides but i didn’t really have the means since it’s all in one room. Still a pretty good experiment, though, IMO. White Berry Kush is a nice looking strain, too, both sides have solid buds. I’m going to post dry weights of everything when it’s ready, along with a good description of bud quality, i think those things are important to consider to compare how each light performed.

xmobotx: i agree, it's going to be close. In person i can see that the LED side has more flower sites and is stickier and the HPS side seems to be leafier. Can't wait to get some weights, though.

Only a couple of trimming pictures today, but i have numbers.

HID bud:

LED bud:

On to the numbers. From the killawatt pictures i posted, the wattage for the Black Dog LED was 779 watts. The wattage for the Hortilux HPS was 1168 watts. That makes the wattage difference 389 watts. Each light was over a 4’x4’ area with 10 White Berry Kush plants (all derived from the same mother so genetically identical) under each. Both sides had the same light cycle, same nutrients, same everything except light, and there was a divider to keep the light focused on its own side. Here are the results:

Hortilux HPS wattage: 1168 watts
Total yield: 462 grams
Grams per watt: .395 g/watt

Black Dog LED Wattage: 779 watts
Total Yield: 378 grams
Grams per watt: .485 g/watt

The difference in grams/watt is 18.6%, with the LED side 18.6% ahead of the HPS side. What this means to me, because its misleading with the HPS side producing more product, is that if i were to get 1168 watts over a 4’x4’ area with 10 WBK plants, i’d get 18.6% more product than with the same wattage of HPS. And that’s just quantity, in my opinion the LED side looks much frostier and less leafy. It’s not cured yet so i can’t say anything about the smoke.

As of right now? I’m pretty sold on these Black Dog LEDs. I’ll report back once everything is cured to let you know how she smokes.

hey brad,
those of us familiar with and fans of LEDs have known for some time they could perform as well, if not OUT PERFORM HPS. HID lighting is a lot of waste, but the LED's can be dialed in to useful spectrums...

thanks for running this test !!! more people need to read this thread. LEDs produce 15-20% more than HPS !!!

I recently gave myself the choice of buying four ounces of dispensary weed or one Lumigrow Pro 325. I chose the Lumigrow.
