friend and I are planning on moving to nyc from north carolina.

we both have only highschool diplomas, and entry level work experience.

our plan is to save up enough money to get a place and survive without working for less than a month.

the plan falls short once we try to figure out how to have a job lined up in the city once we get there.
i have a friend who "moved" to nyc years ago and survived by busking and panhandling before finding a job and home.
i do not want to go that route.

i'm just not sure how to get a job, an entry level job, in a city where i can't do a face to face interview.

i have no connections, except for the aforementioned friend. he cant get me a job. his "job" is selling tomatoes at a farmers market.

has anyone ever gotten an entry level job in a different town without traveling to the employer before the job offer?

it is starting to seem impossible, but we really want to make this happen. any insight is appreciated.

NYC is horribly expensive and there is lots of competition for entry level jobs - lots of immigrants, etc,.

Stay where you are, get a job and some skills for now.

my2cnts brah- relocating is a bitch! I have an Engineering degree and plenty of experience-it cost a lot of money to move/NY has the highest rent in the country and my single most important advice if you really want to move there get a job first! NY is not a place you wanna be flat broke in you will find yourself busking...

it's hard to afford anything in this city, i don't care what your income is!

but some of the better panhandlers can make quite a good living here, some make over 50k!

but be prepared to fight for those good spots.

p.s. if you spit on my mercedes' windshield and try to clean it w/ newspaper for $, i will get out of the car and correct you!

yeah man! thats the issue, having a job first. looking at CL, the entry level jobs offer 11/hr min it seems, obviously because it's so damn expensive to live there

however, i am not above living in a shithole and eating rice and beans for a while.

i don't have anything to even take with me. couple suitcases really. i imagine the only expensive part about the move process would be airfare or bus/train tickets. and of course the expenses for finding a place... but with two people it should be easier

we're okay with the idea of living like charlie and frank from its always sunny, as long as we have internet and weed, we'll probably be fine

is it really god awfully expensive to the point where our dual incomes would barely satisfy our necessary expenses? is there not a way for someone to say, get a job at a pizza place full time and be able to afford living ANYWHERE there?

You talking about living in NYC IE Manhattan or one of the outer Boroughs?Even then it can be a pretty penny.

The rent controlled apartments are typically held onto by the original person on the lease and sublet for 3-4X what they are paying.

Expect to pay $2000/month for a studio in the city. Heard of 3 bedroom apartments in outer boroughs going for $1800 and up, and this was in one of the less desirable places.

the only thing I can think of that'd be worse than relocating, is being forced to relocate after a month, and spending so much time and money relocating, only to have to re-relocate.

Take a step or two backwards bro and have a good long hard look at your plans, and backup plans ... it sounds like you're already trying to do something that you couldn't do a month ago by reinventing it overnight ... it's not gonna work, it's just going to dig yourself into a deeper hole.

Hmnnn Feyd, I can understand the desire to escape to somewhere more exciting. Lucky for me there's always plenty of excitement north of you in Baltimore!

But you might think about trying out northern New Jersey for now - it just might be do-able with 2 incomes and you could easily hop across the river whenever you wanted a taste of the city.

Have you looked at even the prospective cost of living/housing anywhere near NYC??

What are you going to do for a job? If you're serious about moving to NYC it shouldn't be a huge deal to go there for a few days/week etc and actually do job hunting and not just sending in online applications to random places.. Try and estimate the cost of going there for a few days and then reconsider your plan.

My buddy wanted to move there a yr or two ago, his only real comment was that it was unbelievably expensive and even if he was making 40k+ shit would be pretty tight and he never ended up even trying to move out there. IMO Boston is expensive enough!

It's not offensive -- you're just like everybody else... you, who probably has no links to this guy, realises that he's getting in over his head, and you're just showing your concern by looking out for him ... it's nothing offensive, or personal.

People that are bored and tired of living in a dead end town etc.

The idea of moving to California to grow weed is pretty common and my advice is always the same. If you move Anywhere always have a job waiting for you, one that is worth moving for.

It is one thing to daydream about places that are exciting, but reality kicks in fast once you do it. All the fun things you want to do in NYC cost a lot of money and what you will be doing is just busting your ass to stay above water.

My advice to you is to go back to school. Maybe you could get some loans or grants and go to an exciting place that way. I know many people of all ages that are getting grants to go to school and they are not doing terribly. Not as bad as you would do going to NYC without a steady good income.

As said above, go there and visit, do a hard search for work and look at what it will cost to live. A couple nights in a cheap hotel may be all the proof you need.
