petrol in hydro res can it be cleaned

hey there everyone i got some hydro systems for free i got a ghe aquafarm & 2 waterfarms..they are in excellent condition except 1
waterfarm the res smells of petrol can it be cleaned so it can be used again or should i throw it away Peace

but toss it all it will do is kill your plants
"any plastic vessel that has held a petroleum product is generally considered unsuitable for use in a hydroponic system" at least that's what i was told
seem that there is always a little residue left just waiting for a plant to kill

no dont chuck it mate ,easy fix. just wash a few times with some good old fairy liquid with one of them sink sponges (green) then leave them to stand with some hot bleach water for a few days.should sort it right out. goodluck willyweed

The type of plastic used was probably not chosen for solvent resistance , some can absorb and release a considerable amount later or when warmed , no idea if a trace would harm canna or if fuel additives could end up in the bud.


If the plastic has softened/embrittled or discoloured anywhere from long term contact with fuel i would bin it , if its sound then a good scrub with detergent and leaving full of caustic soda solution will remove any taint overnight.

thanks everyone for the replys and info i scrubbed it with fairy liquid then let it soak with boiling water with vinegar then let it soak with hydroponic h202 the smell is going and so is the stain so i will wash it for a few days then see if its clean enough thanks tennerbag

Mate how the fuck did it get to smell of petrol in the first place? lol

the guy i got them from had them in a shed with lawn mowers and i think somebody must have used 1 of the res for petrol they guy who had them had no idea what they where so i asked for them lol

Yeah good shit fairy liquid mums in uk being using it for year to keep there hands fairy sort lol.
If that dont work try using lemons. lemon should cut through fuels and oil and leave it smelling fresh. Good result to get it all for free thou mate even if u have to do a bit of work to clean then up. Good luck
