Should Have Never Got outta Bed Today...

So I've been in the process of starting seeds for the last month. It's still too cold to keep them outside so I've been bringing them in every night under supplemental lighting and setting out every morning.

Almost as soon as I put them out this morning, a couple Crows landed on one tray and started picking. I chased them off, came back about 30 minutes later...This occurred at least 4 times. So the Crows leave and I look out and one of my dogs is in one of the trays. I chase him off (twice) and look out an hour later to see my cat eating from a tray. After chasing her off 3x, she stayed away.

The whole time, gale force wind is beating these poor seedlings to death but I'm determined to have them under the sun. I had them on a patio table and got the brilliant idea to put them on the ground and turn the table on it's side to deflect the wind. I go back out after about an hour and the wind has flipped the table over, onto the trays. I had 6 trays and the table flipped perfectly over to land on them. I don't think I could've purposely set it on the trays as perfectly as it landed.

I'm starting to think this batch of seedlings is cursed. Either that or the forces of Nature are trying to tell me something.

Bummer dude....that is a bad day. Luckily, that kinda super bad day is somewhat a rarity.

Crow note...they are very intelligent, probably will have a hard time outsmarting them. They figure shit out, saw a documentary about 'em, if they had fingers/thumbs could probably do a Rubick's Cube. hehehehehe

Yeah. hopefully tomorrow's a better day.

I've never had problems with birds. Occasionally, my cat will eat them. Oddly enough, she wants nothing to do with cat-nip. You put a Cannabis leaf within a 100 mile radius of her and she'll find it in under 5 minutes and wants to eat it.

had the same problem this this past grow season.

I hate birds that eat babies.

I covered them early in the morning and late afternoon and put barricades of about 10 twigs in each pot for during the middle of the day. Seemed to work.

Btw, my cats will chew every leaf on a cannabis plant if you take your eyes off it for a second....the crows will eat our sunflowers, we had to cage them last year just to get them over 12''.

:comfort: I hope tomorrow your babies catch a break!!

Had a mousie get in the house...
Skipped the dogfood...
Skipped the bread on the kitchen counter...
climbed up the computer desk...
on the computer where my wee fluorescent lamp was helping 3 new seedlings get their 3rd leaves...

And ate the fuck out of every one.

How big are they, could you put them in a tray with a tall dome?

No, these are 3-5'' tall and have outgrown the dome. I think I'll salvage about 75% of them. Bad thing is it's 400 some odd plants, good thing is It's 400 out of (currently) 1800.

I have a Sealpoint and an Ocelot. The Sealpoint will rarely touch them. The Ocelot is obsessed with them...

I don't think I've ever had a year that ''something'' didn't go wrong. Only recourse is to do your best to get 5,000+ out and hope for the best...

"A Murder of Crows" on PBS.......very interesting documentary. Agreed, crows are one of the smartest out there.

Here is the link to watch!

Enjoy!

I've long known the intelligence of Crows. My Uncle caught one and taught it to talk. It's not that I underestimate them, just that I place my bet on my 12 gauge if things progress beyond current events.

The thing didn't ''talk'' as one would think of a Parrot. It randomly spat out ''words'', which were in the eye of the beholder. I've kept Mynahs, Parrots of every description, a few Cockatoos and most Macaws. In comparison to them, the Crow was a half bright but it actually did say a few words.
