the reason I was thinking on using it is they use it to lighten concrete so my local supply yard has a 15 foot pile of it at half the price of lava rock. it is not the identical product but is the same material, just made and sourced locally. I was thinking of going 1 step further and crashing into a finer 1 quarter inch material.

Find the Geological report on where it is mined and it will tell you what the break down is. Shale is just ´mud´ in a geological sense. Black shale can produce gas where as other shales will produce useable products when broken down. AA good point is that it is made of clay particles but I would check out this particular product before adding it to a soil mix......think of the long term use.

Don't use hydroton. The Soil clumps all around it and it isn't very porous. The Lava rock has a million tiny Microbe Holes that hold air and bacteria.... that's what you pant.
The hydroton is to smooth. It will work.... but not nearly as good and also way more expensive in my experience.
I've had friends use it because they had HUGE bags already purchased but it wan't as good as it could have been.

anyone on the east coast know a good place to source lava rock, pumice, any of the superior aeration elements? I was already fucked over with powdery perlite once, had to use hydroton in a pinch and now I'm looking for the good stuff...

I started a worm farm a few months back and all was going good until the other day when I was curious to see how many worms I had now. When I lifted the lid there were very few to be found. I believe I over fed them and prob fed them the wrong things. I had way too many cannabis branches and other green like spent barley beans things causing too much heat due to composition. Lesson learned! Feed the right foods less often when starting out. I have new worms coming this week. I have one of those tower worm farms I got for xmas.
I can grow plants but fuck man did I get played by the worms?? lol
Any other advice is welcomed
Worms can take a while to build up population levels if you start from scratch. They might just be hiding on the bottom.
I started mine last fall from wormsfromthe compost pile and its. just now picking upsteam

Went by the landscape yard and they gave me a bucket of expanded shale for free...
Consistency of brick. I mixed up 2 buckets one with the shale and the other with lava. They both drain at the same speed and the one with lava compacted a little more than the expanded shale.
I think I will still use the lava rock as it is tested to work, maybe one pallet will be the shale to test it out.

So I've got an enzyme tea brewing ATM, half alfalfa seeds half fenugreek.
Now I remember CC saying that fenugreek enzyme tea could be used as a base for a fungicidal foliar with neem oil. I've used it before as a foliar, (and on my foot, problem gone by the way) But I'm wondering if the fenugreek enzyme tea (without neem) could have negative effects on the fungal population in the soil?

I thought it was insecticidal (combine in neem foliar for added benefits against mites / gnats etc). Maybe I have that wrong, but regardless I have done plenty of pure fenugreek sprout teas with no ill effect, tasty too!

The decomposition of my top mulch speaks volumes. Beginning of last cycle I put a couple inches of wood mulch on top. I dropped two containers off with a friend to have the other day and he said "this soil looks a little woody", the mulch had completely broken down into a handful of large wood chunks that were too big to process.
