Cann's Organic No-Till Garden

Welcome! This thread will document my journey into No-Till gardening indoors…ROLS style.

First, a history:

I have been growing small scale on and off for a few years – nothing over 1000w until this year. I’ve experimented with many different media, but always reverted back to soil in the end. Earlier this year I decided to ramp things up and I set up a flower room with 3600w and a veg room with 1000w. At the time I was under the impression of most folks and figured it would be a great idea to buy a line of bottled nutrients (to compliment my bagged soil) in order to achieve the results I wanted. I have always been conscious about health and the earth, so of course I chose organic bottled products and soil (Roots Organic)...lol.

Fast forward to a few months later and I was spending way too much $$$ and had plants that were yellowing at week 4 in flower and I couldn’t keep them green. Obviously the flower production suffered, and the buds were decent but the yield low and smoke wasn’t smooth. Something didn’t feel quite right about the whole bottled nutrient regime. I had been searching for an answer and reading “advice” online for months, but didn’t find anything that truly resonated with me. When I asked the guys at the hydro store, they would just tell me to buy this or buy that - but it would never fix anything.

Then one day I stumbled across one of Lumperdawgz posts on grasscity, and eventually things started falling into place. I have always been a vegetable gardener, but had been brainwashed into thinking that for some reason I couldn’t apply those same principles inside. Once I was able to think outside the stoner science paradigm and apply my knowledge of gardening and permaculture principles to an indoor operation, I found bliss. With help from lumper (a.k.a. cootz) and others (shoutout to all those on the ROLS thread who helped me along!), I was able to lift myself out of the world of myth-based stoner science gardens into the realm of true horticulture.

After a short time I no longer felt bad about anything I was putting in my soil, I was spending less money at the hydro store, and I was getting much better results. No more pH pen, no more bags of Roots 707 soil, no more bottled gunk and cal/mag, no more unnecessary stress. That was about 4 months ago, and things have only gotten better since then.

Since my realization, I have started multiple forms of compost at my house (worms and bokashi on top of the thermal pile I already had going) and begun to cultivate beneficial plants (horsetail, nettle, dandelion, comfrey, yarrow, chamomile, etc.). I have been collecting local leaf litter, free manure/wood from the area, and just about anything that looks good for my compost piles. The way I view organic materials has changed, and I definitely see the world in a different light. A lawn covered in leaves is no longer a problem to be dealt with – it’s a goldmine to be collected and put to use!

Needless to say, I am very happy about the way things are going, and I want to share my journey with y’all. Hopefully this will show how easy it is to convert to no-till gardening from a bottled nutrient/bagged soil regime. If you have any doubts...just follow along.

Now onto the show:

The first thing I decided to do after my realization was to mix up a batch of soil from scratch following cootz’ recipe using the best local ingredients I could find. Around the same time I finished a flowering cycle (in Roots 707), dumped all the soil on a tarp, and reamended it following gascan’s instructions. A few weeks ago I finished another flower cycle, which freed up the room for me to start some no-till pots.

I had originally been running all my flowering plants in 4.6 gallon airpots, but decided I wanted to ramp up the pot size. Picked up some 10, 15, 30, and 45 gallon smartpots – and filled an assortment with my homemade soil mix and a few with my recycled 707. About a week ago I transplanted a bunch of ladies into said smartpots, and that brings us roughly to where we are today.

As far as the technical details go, I am running two flower tents (one 4x4 w/600 watts, another 8x8 w/ 3600 watts) - all 600 HPS lighting. I have one 4x8 veg tent with t5 fluorescent lighting - (2) 4-foot 8 bulb fixtures. Multiple A/C units in the mix, fans, a carbon scrubber for the larger tent, etc.

Here are some pictures of the setup. I'll start with the recently transplanted ladies in their new home , and some pictures of mulch in the no-till pots (although I guess they can’t be called that until my second cycle through..).

For some reason it will only let me add a few pictures per post, so bear with me...

Recently I decided to try my hand at cloning sans clonex...something that I would've thought crazy 6 months ago. I followed cootz' method, which is roughly as follows:

Mix 1 gal h2o with 1oz ful-power (fulvic acid), 2oz aloe, 1tsp potassium silicate. Soak your cuts in this mix for a few hours. Soak your rapidrooters (or another medium) in this mix for a few hours as well. When you get around to it, combine the plugs and cuts however you so choose and place them in your trays or whatever you use. Treat them like you would treat any other clone (mist/humidity, airflow, etc.)

10-14 days later, I had something that looked like this:

Then, a few days after being put into a "recycled" soil mix, this is what they looked like. During transplant I sprinkle the roots with mycorrhizae and once they are potted I water with aloe/fulpower/silica and give them an aloe foliar.

These are by far the greenest/happiest clones I have EVER had. No transplant shock, no chlorosis, no wilting. Straight green and praying leaves the entire time. Needless to say I am never going to buy clonex again, and I will urge others to do the same. Next time I do this I am going to rub the stems inside of a fresh aloe filet right before the cuts go into rapidrooters - we'll see if it can get any better than this lol. I had to compost a bunch of cuts because I had too many! every single one rooted...

thanks again cootz! I couldn't be happier...

EDIT: for reference, here is what my clones used to look like when I used clonex:

Not as easy on the eyes...lol. It hurts to look back at this picture, knowing what I know now. Gotta love that clonex.

the 5-gallon smartpot in the front left of this picture (the one w/ three clones) is currently the only true "no-till" pot I have going. Here is what the pot looked like 2 weeks ago:

The day this plant was cut I planted those three clones and moved the pot back into the veg room. Simple as that. When I pick up some more EWC I will topdress, along with some crab, kelp, and neem/karanja meal.

A while back I received some beans from Swami Kushendez...here are some pics of their development.

On 2/25, I cracked five BO x NL#5/Neville's Haze, along with five TO x BMR Bx1.

Seeds were soaked for 16 hrs in fulpower/aloe/coconut h2o, inoculated with mycorrhizae, and placed into rapid rooters. A few days later, all but one (a TOxBMR) had made it out of the rapid rooters. Upon examination a few days later, the TOxBMR seed had cracked and then rotted...not sure what happened as it was in identical conditions to its brothers and sisters who all came up with no problem. Regardless, I'm searching for a keeper so it's not necessarily a bad thing to lose a weak plant. Survival of the fittest.

Here they are on 3/10:

Here they are 5 days later (3/15):

Here they are another 5 days later, today (3/20):

Speedy growth on these ones

Shoutout to swami for the hookup! :thank you:

K I think thats enough posting for tonight...

gotta say thanks again for all the help I have received here. Who knows what I would be doing without all you kind folks...I'd probably be at the hydro store buying calibration fluid for my pH pens...LOL.

We're not worthy :bow::bow::bow:

Hey man glad to hear you are happy with the results from ROLS. So much to say man...
Those clones bounced back very nicely only a few days after transplant!
Those other clones look amazing and you didn't even have to use rooting hormones! lol

And you are a lukcy mofo to have some of those TO and BO crosses. Those things look like gold. I would like to see a thread just for them.

I'll give them their own thread once they get bigger. They fully deserve it. I can't even explain how excited I am to have these genetics in my hands :)

a dream come true...

Very nice bro!!! I'm loving the ladies and the layout. This is the kind of shit we need to show people. Thanks for posting this Cann!

Looking great! I too had the same "problem" last time I cloned... I took a zillion cuts thinking I was gonna cull a bunch like usual except this time I too used CC's formula, minus the ful-power (because I still need to get some)... Anyway, the aloe and kelp soak is like a miracle elixir and all the cuts looks perfect! Thanks Cootz! Now I have plenty of green friends :)

You'll probably be transplanting those BO/NLH soon if they were anything like mine. Sativa dominant monsters with fast vigorous growth.

Nice work in here broseth~

you plan on sending any in to the server fund anytime soon? maybe setup a VIP thing with Clarence so only select members can see them when they are listed?

It will probably be around early summer for the BO x NLH Bx1...probably around late summer for the TO x BMR.

..this shit takes a grip of time to get right. ..and if the ol Swami's going to have his name attached to anything it better be good~

Patience grasshopper....lets just watch Mr Cann here rock his cannabis concert hall for the time being.
