May i suggest rubbing cannabis oil on the knee, if not already. You'll be amazed at the results from trans-dermal application, with high quality oil. If only straight oil is available, suspend it with vegetable glycerite, or whole alcohol. I'd personally use straight oil and wrap the knee afterwards with more applied beneath. Read up on cannabis cures. It really is a cure all.

Got through surgery yesterday, everything went well, ended up with a partial replacement. Little smaller incision but my god this is painful. Dr. was equipped with hardware to do complete replacement but decided after opening joint to just do medial procedure. Pain meds are making me sick and recieving meds to relieve that but not working well.

Thanks to everyone for support for through this and look forward to getting home tomorrow. Will update when it's all over
and can make better sense.

Hello everyone, was released from the hospital today and sleeping in my own bed tonite. Could have posted this thread in medical cannabis forum but thought I would have more response with real experience in the seasoned members group. Think I made the right choice. Appreciate all the kind words and all the good advice. I posted a couple of nights ago that the incision was smaller because of the partial replacement but it is the same as pics show below. Have physical therapy people coming tomorrow so the pain will really start tomorrow.

I just had my second hip done a week ago. It's all about the Physical Therapy. The hip & knee class was given together @ my Hosp. and they pretty much told us all the same thing "If your NOT going to do the PT, don't come for the surgery."
Wishing you the best.

Hello Drift,

Thanks for the support and good vibes. Had a feeling that some of you guys had knee or hip work done already. Hope the new hips are working out ok. Yes, others have said the same as you about rehab being the key to success with this surgery. I can't imagine why anyone could think they could just bypass a critical part of this procedure, yet you hear stories about people thinking they can get by just being lazy.

Hi ToT,

You're one of several people recommending cannbis oil for healing. Must have a good record with so many peeps saying the same things about this preparation. Will give it a go.

thanks, KS

Wish you well.

Thanks much festerous, feel a lot better this morning. Physical therapist will be here soon to get that part started. Any kind of opiods make me sick to my stomach and just barely can tolerate them. How anyone could become addicted to any variety of these meds for recreational purposes is beyond me.

Keif Stoned, glad to hear your on the road top recovery. I have heard of folks punking out because of the pain involved with PT. They just wanted to sit there and wait for the pain to go away.
My hip is giving me a bit of shit(pain) but so be it. It sure won't slow me down from doing my PT workouts twice a day. What works best for me is using a smoke as a reward for a well done PT. I can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel, me getting back on one of my motorcycles. :woohoo: I figure it'll be at least six months until I can try.

Different strokes for different folks. In my younger days, I once spent about 3hrs smoking what I "Thought" was meth. LOL

Turned out it was the first and only time I've ever smoked crack. Turns out you're either geared for it genetically or not... Best hits of the night made me feel worse than I've ever felt in my life. 15 minutes after I stopped smoking it I felt sooooo much better it was almost bliss.

WOW!

I too didn't react well to opiates. Cannabis is MUCH the preferred medicine in my family. :)

Stay Safe! :blowbubbles:

good to see you back keif.. sexy leg pics:comfort:

Know what you mean about the narcs... Im that way too..

Get on the NSAIDS ( I prefer aleve/naprosyn) if ya dont like
the codos.. ( short for vicos, codeine, etc) take with some food
and as always ice is your friend.

I think one of the most underused painkiller is plain old aspirin..
(buffered is best) kills 3 birds with one stone... analgesic, anti inflammatory and blood thinner---( dont take if you are taking a
blood thinner for prevention of Deep vein thrombosis)

When I have it done I will write my own recovery and Aspirin
ice and indicas will most likely be the only thing I take..Hopefully!!

Just like child birth, boot camp, and circumcision , ( WTF..lol)
We all have to go through it at one point or another...

God speed and take comfort knowing you werent the first and wont
be the last to experience this god awfull pain... BTW.. Pain lets you
know you are still alive.. Im here for you bro if you need anything.

Hello everyone, just an update on the knee work. Had my first real problem a couple days ago. Had a good today wednesday with first physical therapapy exercise. The pain was excruciating, an almost sick to your stomach experience that would be very hard to do without pain meds onboard. I like to challenge myself but when Helga, (i shit you not) bent my knee back 20 degrees I knew baby aspirins were not gonna cut it.

Anyway, later that nite, my knee started hurting and swelling with pain I had never experienced. Finally ended up at the same hospital as surgery was done. After many blood draws, it was determined that the joint had become infected and would have been very serious if ignored. Now taking Keflex for infection and Duladid for pain and will resume rehab tomorrow morning.

Rutt ro..

doesnt sound good bro... If you dont see improvement from the oral keflex within 48 hrs ( decrease swelling, pain, redness etc.) Start sounding the bitch horn that you want IV anti-biotic therapy...or
at least get the docs attention ( sometime hard to do) that something
is wrong.

Hopefully it is some mild cellulitis ( skin infection)
I don t even want to mention the M word (mrsa)

If that shits gets in the joint your are in for a world of hurt...

If the oral anti biotics dont start to improve the symptoms
within 48 hours .. get more aggressive anti biotic therapy...

god speed bro

Sounds like you are having a very tough time with this. Usually, the knee is exercised the first post op day, in the hospital. Without bending it, asap, after the surgery, it gets pretty stiff and it is tougher to remotely, get the flexion, you had before. While the knee replacement is relatively new..keep bending it, as much as you can and try to get as much flexion out of it, as possible.

If you do not bend it as soon as you can and often, it tends to get stiff and you have less motion. After a year of so, bending it will be natural with the other knee and you won't be sorry, for the pain of bending it now.

Often, that swelling and redness is cellulitis. Still, it is extremely painful. You should not be in as much pain, at the point you were. Universally, by the 3rd day, the pain is tolerable.
With a implanted knee, I was back to normal and drove myself home from the rehab center/hospital 10 days later. With a partial knee, you should do much better. Stay on top of that infection/cellulitis, often, if the antibiotics don't work, they have to go back to surgery, to clean out the infection and put in a new, replacement. Which is why you need to follow the instructions nukklehead gave you.

There is one other consideration for your flare-up. Sometimes we are allergic to iodine and therefore, the die, used to cleanse the skin on the knee with. That can be a reason for the redness and swelling. Or, a flare-up--inflammation that leads to cellulitis; Since, you just started bending that knee, right before the flare-up, the act of bending it and it being that painful can cause it to swell, turn red and cry in pain. The ice really helps the heat in the knee.

Those cooling machines are often taken off and not replaced, plus they cannot walk around with you. Portable ice bags with a "knee" wrap are rather handy. If you can find one. My hospitals pharmacy had one and none since. It was nice to wear through the physical therapy, while exercising a pretty hot knee. The more you move it now, the easier it will be, later.

It seemed, during the first year after an implant, my knee was a bit stiff in the mornings and if, I didn't bend it much, during the day, even stiffer. Once, my knees were in sync, I couldn't tell much difference.

Best of luck with a speedy recovery from this little set-back.

hey guys, just to give an update. Everything feels to be improving and much less pain. Not sure what kind of infection took place but at least 4 diff. people were asking me questions while filling out a report after being readmitted. Everyone involved with this was very concerned about what caused it, especially me. I did recieve IV-antibiotics when I got into my roomfor the nite, until I left the next day.

So now the swelling, pain, and color are normal and I feel great. I'm watching the snow storm out my bedroom window at home and ready to start my rehab again. Looks like everything is going right this time.

Thanks again everyone for your concern and to Nukklehead and justpassinthru for the advice and support.
