@ lee: missed that! When you underrun a HPS lamp the spectrum changes. One of the reasons why you don't have a single spike of sodium orange light such as a low pressure sodium lamp is the pressure buildup in the arc tube: that spreads the spectrum. At lower power that pressure is also lower, and so is the spectrum spread. All the more reason to use it together with plasma ;)

@JohnWayneWith one HPS lamp you need to spread the light as well as you have no overlap. So based on uniformity and levels I'd do 90 cm. You can come closer easy but that will have effect on uniformity.

That makes sense and is much simpler than I thought the explanation would be.

I assume the 95% light maintenance at 5000 hours figure is at the 1000 watt setting?

Would the light maintenance figure correlate proportionately to the wattage increase running at 1150? As in shorter bulb life or would it be the same?

I thought it went up to 1150 watts? I've got a 6" low power intake and 6" high power extraction. Is this good enough for a 1Kw?

Sorry, 1150 it is (slipped on the keyboard).
You can try, but I've had major problems with the Gavita 1000 regarding temperature control.

I think you'd be better of with the 600w in combination with LEP or LED in a small tent.

@whazzup: I bought a Gavita PRO1000DE and im going to use it in a grow 1.7mx1.3m with the ceiling at 2.4m.
I have enough air circulation to keep it at 1150 and also wanted to know what are the ideal height to run it. How much can I grow my plants (aka which is the useful light penetration?), and which distance from the top of the colas I have to keep the lamp to get the best results?

It will be a bit less than at 100% (not much), but the light maintenance we spec very conservative, so in practice it wouldn't make any difference. Do run your lamps at 1000W for about 100 hours for them to stabilize.

I had a quick question...Can one take the eye bolt off of the top of the ballast and lag screw it(the fixture) right up to the ceiling?

No, I would not recommend to do so: You have no upward airflow to cool the ballast properly anymore and your hot reflector will be very close to your ceiling. The fixtures are balanced and can be mounted on just the ballast hanging point.

Thanks whazzup. I'm just trying to extract every inch of ceiling height to be able to use these fixtures. Back to the drawing board.

6 would do. 2 in-line rows of three, rows 1.8m apart, in-line row center lamp distances 1.15m Would give you about 950 umol avg at 100%, about 1100@115% at 90 cm from the reflectors. Don't go any closer than 70 cm at 115%, the avg top height should be about 80-90 cm from the lamps.

I would like to put some Gavitas in my grow room that is 420x120cm (~14'x4'), which is split in half, two different grows.

Would you recommend 4 1000W's or 4 600W's?

Any good shop in Rotterdam or Amsterdam that has Gavitas and other useful stuff that you can recommend?

I see that the Philips GreenPower 1000w EL bulbs can be bought for about $120-$140 online. Are they available cheaper in bulk anywhere? Since my hydro shop does not stock them it would be prudent for me to just order a dozen or so at once.

I am considering switching one of my lights to Gavita to check it out. Since height is a premium to me right now I think I would need to go with the remote ballast. Is there any downside to that option other than the radio interference?

@AK: lamps ordered per box are usually cheaper. So let them order it and negotiate a price. Or shop around.

I personally think EMI is enough downside.

The height of the room is 2.35m.

It's a perpetual grow so there's one month difference between the two sides, hence the even amount of lamps to fit the difference in plant height. But I could make the table height adjustable instead, that way I could use 3 lamps and still have all plants at the same height.

Or do sog or scrog instead?

If you want two different rooms I'd think 600W fixtures, 2 in every room, but that will give you lower intensities. Alternative would be 2x1000W running at 750W, but make sure to first burn in the lamps for 100 hours at 100% to stabilize.

it will give you 1100 umol @ 70 cm distance with about 90% uniformity, don't go much closer than 60 cm.

2 in a row, 1.1m distance between centers lamps.

I managed to rearrange the room to make two 1,2x1,2m tables next to each other instead. So two 1000W Gavitas are ordered and looking forward to put them to work :)

So my store is out of lights and says Gavita is not currently shipping units(on back order). Any idea when they will be shipping to the U.S. again?
