GEM's Urban Guerrilla Swamp Grow 2013

High guys ... Well let me start off ....This will be a bit boring during the start up but in April it'll all kick O.F.F.F... This early stuff is more for me to keep track and get idea's a bit prior to anything being finalized....

Location, Location, Location ..... 3 plots ... 2 Swamp/marsh plots .. 1 field plot next to a stream ..... All of these are Urban location ..... they are within 300m of high traffic areas ...... The way I see it people dont see whats right under their nose ... And it makes it easy for me to park and get to the plots without suspicion

Prepping the plots .... In the swampy areas Ill be running swamp tubes where its overly wet/can flood and I will be searching for some high ground to put a few in the ground ...... organics is my style cause you gotta respect the land you sow ... Chemicals dont belong out in nature IMHO ... soil mixture .... bottom 1/3 of tubes will be 100% coco ... middle will be 1:1 coco/peat and 1:1 ewc/perilite ... top 4" will be 100%coco, neem cake and diatomacious earth.... Amendments .... espoma gardentone/rose tone ..kelp ..chicken manure...greensand ...d.lime...azomite ...ewc...epsom salts .... for Bloom I'll top dress high P-K guanos ....plus a couple kelp/epsom salt foliar sprays

The experiment ... 1/2 the tubes will be 100% coco in the bottom and 1/2 will be 4:1 coco/perilite .... Doing this to see what will work best for swamp tubes .... Also the containers will vary to see what height/diameter combo is better ... Containers 32-gal trash cans cut in half ...14"Hx20"dia ... And concrete form tubes ...48"Hx12"Dia...also cut in half ..... may leave 1 of each full size deeper in the swamps .... The field plot will all be in ground ..... going there in the spring during rain storms to expand my holes/re-amend ..... holes will be amended with coco/peat (slight mound) ... greensand ... chicken manure .. d.lime .... kelp ... espoma tone ... epsom salt ... ewc ... azomite ..... All soils will be left to cook/loose the smell for atleast 1 month ....

The strains ... Thats the name of the game ..... Its a work in progress

Dutch Passion Durban Poison ...ran her with zero mold finished Sept 25th

S99 crosses ... Not sure how she will do or when she will finish

Jack Herer F5 x 4SD ... The jack was awesome outdoors ... end of September finish with <5% mold (lots of rain)

KKSC (possibly) ... On good authority she should do well .. First time w her

LVPK x NL5/Haze .... LVPK is said to do will so Im sure these will be fine

Casey Jones crosses ... breed for this climate/latitude

Sk1 x Haze ... Gambling .... But sk1 and haze should make a nice pair

SSSDH crosses .... Just looking to see if theres a quick flower hybrid with resistance and vigor .... these are a 50/50 shot but worth the try if it works out in my favor ;)

.... hopefully I can get a couple more clones that do well outdoors in this area .... Doing a decent mix this year to see what thrives and what dies so I can focus on those next year .... All clones will go out end of May with a couple week veg under 1k MH ... Seedlings will go out similar time frame but they will wait till they sex on my deck under the BIG hps

I think thats it for now .... Thanks for any suggestions!

PS:sorry for the wall of text .... early morning rambling

Oh looking for idea's on pest prevention .... read the sticky already ;)

Heres my thoughts .... chopped up bars of soap (irish spring or something strong scented) scattered around the plants.... Sprayed with Hot Pepper wax/neem till July .... Switch to rosemary oil and peppermint oil closer to flower ...... Chicken wire cages around as many plants as possible ..... Slug bait ..... and Im going to dig in a dozen solo cups with beer for the slugs at each plot...... Also loosely wrap the stalks with steel wool to keep slugs off and the bases from being chewed

Also heard of an egg/milk spray for deer prevention? Any first hand experience? Hopefully the vegetation is lush so they dont bother the girls ...... Let the think tank begin!! :thank you:

Word up on the thread Gemini! glad to see us NE'ers getting ready for the OD season. I am interested in how the planting on a swamp works. Ive always been told by oldtimers that the swamps is the place to plant but then the qs of flooding, bugs, exc enter my head. Is this your 1st swamp grow (i dont think it is from what u were saying but if it is... SWEET!). Got a nice line of of ladies for the OD i am interested in how this goes and what u do for prepping the area. I do have plenty of swamp not to far from me and there is ZERO traffic so it might be a spot i wanna check out. Im for sure looking forward to this man!

Planting in the swamp kicks ass. I do it all the time. Beavers do have a tendency to ruin shit awfully fast. I have not yet tried the swamp tube. For me tieing a grow bag or bucket to a crotch in a tree 4-5' up it, and running a rope from the bucket to the swamp/water works great, wick action baby!!! I even have a couple spots where i can set my grow bags in 2-3 inches of water, and then i use bamboo stakes to hold them in place in case the water rises, it's essentially a ppk in nature. The top 6-8 inches of the plant never gets wet, it works like a dream. I had a few i did like this that i didnt get to baby and i averaged 100 grams a piece.

good luck with your project and hope you get a great grow outcome...

Oh looking for idea's on pest prevention ....

outdoors watering neem into the soil will stop most bugs as long as you are able to maintain it throughout the grow. it works well for me to keep the grasshoppers and caterpillars off my plants...

For those of you that don't know neem oil, along with corriander oil are the active ingrediants in sm-90, it's some of the best shit you will ever add to your water, and it smells good too!!!!!!!

What up NE_G ... First time in a true swamp though my field is submerged 6" under water in the spring from heavy rains .... But my swamp tubes should fix up any issues of flooding so that a good portion if the roots won't be submerged .... As far as bugs ... I'm thinking essential plant oils .. And plant health plus Ewc/kelp foliar w neem ..... Bugs go after weak plants outdoors so keep em healthy and issues are minor.
As far as prepping I just figure where the sun is and plant so they get most light possible ... I also try to bring in tree branches and thorns to make it as thick as possible ... Attach chicken wire to tubes or to stakes in the field. I just try to get the coco and peat out early spring .... Dump organics all over it ... Let it cook for 4+wks .... Mainly to remove smell so animals don't dig when I got plants

Thanks for the insight frank ... That's an interesting way of growing in the swamp .... But mine doesn't flood crazy amounts ... I try to place mine so they blend ... Usually have a bush or tree to the north of the plant if I can ... Helps hide them a little just in case someone finds the plot they might not find all the plants .... Are there any specific issues you encounter that I should watch out for?

Thanks Ozzie ... I got neem oil to spray and I got neem cake to mix w the soil.

Just got the casey jones crosses in ...

Casey jones x sour bubble ix 1
(Casey jones x the white)x Casey jones f2
Casey jones x arnies snowdog
Midnight madness x C+

Gonna test out a few Valley OGs in my field spot and 1 in my greenhouse

Oh found a pack of blue satelite 2.2 that I'll pop ... And getting a thai influenced blueberry cut that should do nice outdoors too .... Lots of plants and lots of genetics .... Will be doing some wild seed sowing so there are extras growing at the spot in case I need a replacement.

Two years ago i had a chopper fly right over me and one of my patches, and really low to the ground it was. They went about 100 yards past me and turned and hovered. I was hiding in the thickest brush i could find. When they turned the chopper around to fly away, it was the fastest i ever ran in my life, and i had rubber boots on!!! Forest Gump didn't have shit on me that day.
On another note, one major problem i had was beavers. The year before they were there but did no damage. This last year the fucked shit up bad. They had started to make another dam, just south of my growing plain. So needless to say i lost like 30 plants to flood waters. So my advice if in a swamp, is to plan for the unexpected, If i would have had all my plants in grow bags, instead of in the ground, i would have had alot more smoke this fall. The best piece of advice i can give you is visit your plants as often as you can, at least once a week, because nature can sure fuck things up really fast. Oh and always wear camo in case you need to hide, before you run lol!!!

Haha ... That's too funny ..... Looking back now. I had a few planes fly right over me ... Even a Leo chopper ... But they never came in for my plants so I guess they didn't see anything .... My locations are too close to civilization so camo will make stick out worse ... I wear greens and brown regular cloths so I can blend in out in the woods and when I walk back out into the parking lots or roads....

I'm gonna be able to visit one swamp spot every week if I need to ... The other one would be every other week due to location and minimizing foot traffic .... My field I might visit 5times total ... I've grown there before and if they are in ground the stream waters them for me. Good advice e the floods and beavers .... I'm gonna have a replacement for each hole out at the spots in grow bags just in case ... Just gonna drop a few seeds into each bag and just cut out the males ... Unless I find one worth blowing his load:tumbleweed:

Trying to acquire a few more cuts .... Hopefully have MOB from my buddy ... If he finds a cut of her around.

That's an awesome idea with the replacement plants, then if all goes well there is a moveable plant so yield and potency can be maximized. For me having a spot i can visit whenever i want is the best, where no regular hiker would go because of the terrain. If i intitially don't wanna go thru it, then most other people wouldn't attempt it, and get torn up, or poked in the eye, or dirty for that fact, the thought of wet feet in your shoes is a real good deterant for most people.

I'm thinking a small drone with camera to check your spots.
I'm sure they're out there for not too much money. A local RC
airplane hobby club would be a good intro to the sport.

You could sit in your car in a parking lot near by.

Hey, don't waste your time with beer cups etc for slugs, get slug-b-gone pellets and sprinkle them around the entire grow site. We had slug all over the clones we had sitting on the ground with in an hour, they are bad in our spot, used slug-b-gone and saw maybe a half dozen after that. We also dust the ladies in diatomaceous earth powder, any bug that get on them will ingest it and die. That combo kept our girls basically bug/pest free, slug-b-gone twice(once in the spring, once again mid summer) and the diatomaceous earth powder we did 3 dustings for the season.
Also it would be easier to make little chicken wire cages around the base of the plants to keep critters away.

Thanks ... But I don't want to toss pellets of poison around my spots .... Seeping into the ground that the plants grow in ..... Ordering 15# of diatomaceous earth.

"Deer Off" is the best prevention spray out there, it rates the highest with 45% prevention. The next thing up from that are 8' tall fences. I know there's a lot of room between 45% and 100% but when deer are hungry they will stop at no measure to eat your buds, they're like a lake of water in a dry desert to them come end-of-season.

Shards of soap rates around 25% prevention I've read. Not a bad idea, but I'd go with either the "Deer Off" or the fencing (green); depending on how well you want to sleep at night. It also depends on how common deer are in the area of the grow, I would cover any deer tracks each time you leave the grow then that way you can see how many/how often deer are visiting your garden.

Goodluck!

Oh and also, if you want to learn A LOT and I mean A LOT about guerrilla growing buy Vinnie Kaz's book "Trade Secrets"....

Let's just say it's the best $40 I've ever spent in my life.
http://www.tradesecretspublishing.com/

He has a whole chapter on swamp growing and building swamp tubes, do's and don'ts that you would never even think of. I'm right here with ya man, we're gonna kill it this year swamp-style!

Your Irish spring soap is organic? weird mine isn't :moon:

No it's not but does a bar or 2 of soap equal the pounds of poison pellets?:) .... Plus if I surround the edges of my swamp tubes w steel wool the slugs wont make it to the plants with a secondary defense of diatomaceous earth re-applied after rain storms .... I just really dont like growing w poison cause cannabis is one of those plants that holds onto chemicals and what not (used for leaching heavy metals out of the ground).... Use the bait on one plant and not on the other .... Get both tested see if anythings different .... You'd be surprised!
..... I personally know that I will never produce anything that has the potential to harm any patients who smoke these flowers. But thank you for all your suggestions it's giving me food for though!!

Thanks you for the tip on the book plant n prosper! I'll check it out.
