What causes the burnt out/groggy effect when coming down from some strains?

Anyone know what causes this? Is it per strain or something being done during the grow cycle? I definitely know not all strains have this and would like to stay far far away from whatever causes this...

Thanks if you know. :blowbubbles:

what i have seen posted many times is that CBN, a degradation product from THC is the culprit
i smoked a lot of weed years ago, like many others here, and i do remember that feeling, that burned out feeling
flash forward to now, growing my own indoors, run about 10 different strains or so, and don't smoke, just vaporize
and not 1 has given me that old burnt out feeling
so i suspect smoking may not be the best way to take this medicine, at least not for me

Dunno what it is... but I find it in Indica-dom hybrids and Indicas.

I stick to Sativa-dom hybrids. Usually only run into that occasionally with other people's meds. Really sucks when it happens as I really don't enjoy being thick/slow in the morning... even if it's just for 20-30 minutes.

p.s. those strains are great for topicals and muscle rub oils. :)

I ran a multi strain run of sativa dominants two years ago where I let everything go extra long. I really let the trichs amber up, the plants were definitely in senescence when harvested. Cuts which previously had provided an uppy electric buzz were more lethargic. In fact I started to think I might have some serious health issues going on the way I just ran out of energy and shut down by early afternoon (err.. for sake of disclosure.. wake in the dark and baking at sunrise). Then I realized that it was my over ripened plants that were robbing me of energy. One of my Kali Mist cuts actually turned into some serious headache weed. This all could be from THC degrading into CBN and other nasties.

This happened smoking blue dream... Couldn't figure out if it was the pheno or the grower because other blue dreams Ive had dont do this... Weird thing was the blue dream still had the up haze effect and noticeable room aroma after smoking. It also looked well grown, kinda poorly manicured though.

I dont believe this to be an indica or sativa thing as I have had plenty of indicas that don't have this, although I must say I do find it more often when there is indica involved with the strain... However, with that being said, more folks grow indicas so that could be just coincidence.

I dont like it, whatever it is... I hope someone figures this out because it really needs to be addressed and eliminated. Its basically a Cannabis hangover, not cool.

Good question, I do not think indica's or late harvest is to blame for this effect but I would like to know what causes it.
Often I find the rushy/high powered sativa's to have the most burnout.
Also I know poorly stored herb can have more burnout effect so could be mold in some cases.

Thats the main thing I look for in "good" weed. If it finishes (the effect) clean with no burn out then it's in the good category. Lots of the domestic Colombian I get here has that effect but I've also grown out sativa & indica that had a burn out effect. I hate it and I won't keep any bud that gives that effect.

Peace from Colombia!

I've had plenty of shitty brick stuff that did this to me. I'd get headaches and stuff too when coming down.
I also grew a bubba cross that made me sleepy and lethargic. It felt like I was wearing a weighted body suit. That was some nap time weed
The former I'd equate to shitty weed, the second I equate to higher CBD. To me weed is good even if it makes me sleepy, it just serves a different purpose.

I noticed I am a little hungover (thick, slow, groggy) in the morning with Indica. With Sativa Dom I seem to be ok in the morning.

Maybe from the act of smoking itself ? In my experience it definitely is, undoubtedly. Smoking is a poor decision, proper extraction is where its at.

When you smoke, certain stains of marj will affect your CB1 receptors more than CB2, which are mainly found in the CNS.
As you increase your cannabinoid levels - medicate -the inhibatory effects of glutamate release become apparent, foggybrain.
Which strains affect CB1 vs. CB2, I dont know, could be patient specific, genetic differences, more to learn.

I am probably incomplete in my answer but its a start, hope it helps!

Have a haze and when i over cook her (run it too long) she goes from speed weed to a burnt feeling. The tests show lower levels of thc and higher cbn vs the earlier picks. Might be other reasons but the cbn's is def one key factor.

I've noticed plants taken longer tend to do this more to me. But some strains just seem to do it too. Romulan will KO me if I vaporize too much (my buddies BC fruit smelling cut). Not really my favorite thing.

Yes... but were you groggy in the mornings?

I think this question was directed towards me. No, I was waking quite alert. Some strains have done that, leaving me with a hangover. Also I tend to taper off late in the day and try to avoid smoking in the evening since I've already used up my daily quota of rewarding returns for bowls smoked by that time.

Too much amber in the trichs makes my windshield hard to see through after a while. Clear to cloudy drive faster less wipeouts.

Yeah... this is what I do to get sleep meds from the sativas I run.

That's not what we're talking about though... it's actually quite similar to a hangover the next morning.

I'm well familiar with late running sativas making me konk out after an hour or so. :)
