Has anyone used any of the inline carbon filters before? I just saw one for the first time at a local store the other day. It would be perfect for smaller grow tents, I could get the fan and filter out of the tent, and have a lot more room. Just curious if anyone has any experience with them.

I haven't used one (yet) but checked one out last trip to the hydro store. Looks like it would open up some additional set up possabilities (hood<duct<inline filter<fan<duct out of room) making it feasable to air cool lights and control odor with 1 fan.
I use a standard phresh filter as an inline (built a box around it). Works great. Uses a single fan/filter combo to ventilate multiple areas.

I'd imagine that it's just a standard filter with an additional air gap and skin. Wouldn't be too hard to DIY using duct reducers.
'Bout the only issue I see is that Phesh Filters recomend washing the pre-filter (on their standard filters) monthly. No way to do that here. Would need to filter the air before it enters the ductwork.

thanks RM, that is kinda what i was thinking, but would still like to see the inside of one.
if you picture the filter laid out horizontally, it could also be a couple of vertical layers of carbon that the air is pushed through. i say this only because the diameter of these things doesn't appear to be too much.
i only took a quick google image look however, so i could be entirely off base with that assumption.

I had an inline filter that was just a metal box with 4" flanges on either side. It opened from the top and inside it had basically a metal screen(rigid metal like sheet metal with a ton of little holes drilled in it) full of carbon that fit snugly on the diagonal in the box, with a weather stripping type seal around the screen thing. Worked really well actually.

Yeah, this was was actually pretty expensive when I bought it, and seems like it would be easy enough to make at home. It had a foam almost tempurpedic material on the inside of the lid with a vinyl cover over the foam, which made a really good seal on the top. Not sure why it didn't have the same on the bottom, but like I said, it worked really well. I just peeled the rubber "weather stripping" kind of seal from the metal screen part and refilled it every once in a while, but I think they wanted you to buy their replacement filters to go in it.
Anyone have a pic. I have not seen one of these before. I have 3 in line filters but there all what we use as far as how they are made. I use Can..If I search for in line carbon filter the ones we use come up like Can..

It was basically like this:
Not the same brand but same basic design. The one I had opened from the top with latches like a toolbox to access the filter inside. I use an 8" can filter now, but this design was great for smaller setups like when I was using a 4" fan. they also make larger models which basically have A N and M shaped configurations of the filters inside of the boxes depending on size. like an 8" would have the M configuration with 4 filters in it.

Thats the one I saw, phresh is the brand. A little less than 200 I think for the 6". Its a little more than a reg filter, but if i get some more room it could help out a lot.

I'm not sure. I don't think the one I had is made anymore. It was pricey and the replacement filters were kind of expensive too. I never bought a replacement because I figured out how to refill it myself, maybe a lot of other people who bought them did the same? It worked really well though. At the time I was using it I was in an apt with a cop living above me. haha I gave it to a friend and he isn't using it anymore, maybe I'll ask for it back if I set up a tent for veg or something.

Ill go out on a limb here as the bastard child.. Ive been using the stealth box for a few years now... Mine has 2 charcoal filter cartridges hooked up to a 6 inch vortex 1k lights 8 plants...
So far it has served me well... The cartridges are a little pricey but what fan/charcoal isnt ( unless you reload your own) .
Ive posted a couple times for other opinions on this setup and mostly
like above it isnt a well known piece of equipment..
The reason I like is it fits up nice between joists in basement applications.
As far as performance is concerned, it does the job. I vent outside
and cant smell until cartridges are dead..
As far as life of cartridges it depends on how you use it....
I am conservative and live in a temperate climate so my use of exhaust fan varies seasonally and at what point Im in the grow
(flower vs veg) stage. So I try to stretch them as long as I can.
When crunching the numbers I think that it is on par with any other
odor reducing system.. Kid of like PC vs MAC....
Both work but one is more proprietary ( stealth box) than the other.
And once you get locked in to Stealth box... it doesnt make too much sense to reformulate your set up and go back to for lack of a
better term CAN style filters...
Overall I think I am happy with my stealth box... As long as I am still able to get the filters I think I will stick with it.. (growco.com, 4 hydro.com----plug.....)
