Canon Powershot G12

Hey there everyone

My old Samsung ST500 was on it's way out (POS!) so I decided to upgrade with a new camera, so today I ordered a Canon Powershot G12.

Very excited about this camera, the bloke at the photo shop said it was about the best point and shoot out there for taking macro's (bud shots!)

I've always had sub par bud pics even though some of my buds look incredible in the flesh, so I cant wait to have such a nice camera, and learn how to take the best macros!

Any thoughts or advice on this camera is much appreciated.

Yeah I wanted to go to a DSLR, but the lowest price DSLR's were still similar prices as the top of the range P'n'S cameras.

Also I have no need for fancy lenses as I don't need to take pictures of birds that are long distances away. Reallistically this camera will take photos of (a) my kids (b) my dogs and (c) my plants, kind of a who's who list of my lifes priorities!

Agreed that sometimes buds look way better in pictures than they do in the flesh, but yeah I want better pics, and my Samsung is well and truly on it's way out. Dissapointing considering the camera isn't that old and hasn't taken that many photos.

Camera arrives on monday, I cant wait to get photo's of my buds! I had 8 Power Kush that were due to come down on Sunday (Day 63) but I will put that back a few days so I can get LOTS of good photo's and play with the macro capabilities.

I love my Cannon Powershot. They are a powerful little camera and you can push them quite hard. I won't give away my model, but I can take moon photos where you can zoom in and see craters.

Using this in reverse means that you can also get some great bud pics. I took the following with a powershot ...

To take macro pics, I would
1) Put the camera in P mode.
2) Adjust focus manually (set to 1cm)
3) Without zooming, place the lens as close to the bud as you can
*make sure you don't zoom!*
4) take the pic! :D

When you load you picture up into your computer, you will be able to zoom in so far you'll see the plants hairs :D :D :D

The Canon A1300 is my go to camera. Perfect size to fit in a cell phone pocket yet large enough that's it's easy to hold. This model uses 2 AA batteries and has a view-finder (and an LCD screen) which is great in sunshine and other funky lighting conditions. It doesn't have near the features of higher model Canons but is a super easy to use camera that takes decent photos and video. It costs less than a hundred dollars.

All of my album pics were taken with an 8MP Canon PowerShot A590IS but I just bought a 16MP Canon PowerShot SX160IS that I haven't really had a chance to play with yet. I really like these Canon point and shoot cams with manual modes...super easy to use and you get some great shots for the money.

good choice with the G series.
i had the g-9,g-10..excellent cameras.
i especially liked the RAW feature.and the macro setting is very nice.
you can get different add on lenses, and external flash.

only problem, dont drop them..i dropped my g-10 from about 3' and it screwed up the focusing.
i have an olympus aw100 now.
shock and water proof..16 mp.good features but not as versatile as the g series.

I have few Canons before. U must check custom firmware called CHDK (if u dont known already).

Regards

CHDK is awesome! It was a bitch for me to install, but I never turned back afterwards. It gives you access to raw files which contain ten times the detail. For instance a regular photo on my camera is abt 2mb, but if i use CHDK to access raw files it's more like 20mb. It's free to install, and you put it on your memory card.

get a tripod and set the timer funtion to take the pic for real macro clarity. If hand holding, make sure you are using speeds over 150th of a second. If you can, get the plant out of the grow room and set up a cfl to light it, that will get the best pics of the trichs.
