Raleigh, N.C. — The House Rules Committee has killed a bill that would have legalized medical marijuana, an effort by House leaders to stem a tide of phone calls and emails on the topic.

It is somewhat unusual to give a measure an unfavorable report. Typically, bills that won't pass merely sit in committee unheard and untended.

"We did it to be done with it, so people could move on for the session," said Rep. Paul "Skip" Stam, R-Wake. He said lawmakers we're being "harassed" with phone calls and emails about medical marijuana.

The committee listened to public comments about the bill for about 20 minutes before voting.

"Today, my purpose is to convince all of you to legalize marijuana for medical purposes," said Catherine Lyles, 51, of Raleigh. She told the committee that she had been treated for brain cancer 17 years ago and was expected to live only five years.

After the committee meeting, Lyles said that marijuana had helped her recover from the illness by getting rid of nausea that wouldn't even let her approach a bowl of chicken soup. She said she began investigating marijuana at the suggestion of medical professionals, who said they couldn't legally prescribe any drug that would work as well.

"It was quite a problem. I didn't know anyone who smoked pot," she said, adding that her mother and best friend helped track down some cannabis through a network of childhood friends.

"I cannot tell you how quick and complete the relief I had from horrible nausea was," she said.

Most other speakers and visitors who crowded into the committee room were there to urge lawmakers to embrace medical marijuana. Only one person, Jere Royall with the North Carolina Family Policy Council, urged lawmakers to vote down the bill.

The only lawmaker who spoke at length about the measure was Rep. Kelly Alexander, D-Mecklenburg, one of the bill's sponsors. He said prior fiscal studies showed the state could reap $39 million per year if medical marijuana were legal.

North Carolina, he said, would be the 19th state to legalize medical marijuana if it passed the bill, he said.

However, that won't happen this year.

Under House Rules, when a bill given an unfavorable report, "the contents of that bill or the principal provisions of its subject matter shall not be considered in any other measure originating in the Senate or originating thereafter in the House."

Oddly you sound like a redneck. If you think this through you realize your President, a flaming liberal, isn't doing anything to help the cause of MMJ. In fact, many feel he led on the MMJ voters for their support.

really? what's a redneck sound like? i know, i have to live around the undereducated people.

my president? wtf? i don't agree with a mother fucking thing he does in regards to MMJ.

i am a live and let live person. the people in the south i know that are true SOCIAL conservatives want to force their morals on the rest of us. if that is acceptable to you then have fun with that shit.

i have no intentions of getting into a political discussion with you or anyone else on this site, but SOCIAL conservatives are a big issue when it comes to freeing up the weed for all.

that is all i was implying. i should have used the the word SOCIAL in front of conservative. i have no issue with their values as long as they don't impose them on me.

:tiphat:

so who do you believe is responsible in the south for no MMJ?

Sorry, I posted how I really feel, and it's not ready for prime time.

I'm torn right now between harassing the everloving shit out of our corrupt state house, and just putting my house on the market and leaving. This is a beautiful place. I love it here. But there are a lot of people here who just let the government run all over them because they figure somehow that screws liberals.

Our state house has been bought and paid for. The way this bill got tossed aside was a slap in the face to our democracy. The wingnut assholes have bought the entire state house and until they get outrageous enough to even piss off the idiot social conservatives, they're going to drive this place into the ground.

I really don't feel like moving. But I'd rather never have to think about these assholes again.

and the new Governor is going to be of little help.

Remember how Cheney was the little man behind the curtain of Bush? Cheney couldn't get elected, because people could hear him breathing through the black mask. So they put a stupid guy up front and let Cheney be the puppet master.

That's what we have now with Pat McCrory, and his own personal Cheney, Art Pope. Almost nobody knows who Art Pope is, but he's the one dictating policy in NC. Unless and until people wake up and smell the dog turds, this state is screwed.

Seriously, the thought of packing up and getting this house ready to sell makes me want to eat a bullet, but I think you can stick a fork in me.

Thanks for the heads up about Art Pope. I looked him up and like what see from him so far. Being a successful and influential figure isn't a bad thing. Is it? I think it would depend on what your goals are. Notice this bill was killed before it got out of committee. McCrocy had nothing to do with it. I like what I see about Art Pope so far though. Founded the Libertarian Party branch in the 70's and went from a commoner to a political kingmaker? Sounds good to me. That's how you change policy.

(I don't mean that I like or support him, I just like what I read on Wiki. Never heard of him before.)

That's a bit of a mind wobbler, honestly.

Even lifelong conservatives around here, when they find out about Art Pope and what he's been up to, are deeply disturbed. Incidentally, almost nobody knows his name around here. Not sure why that works for you, having power consolidated in one man that almost nobody is aware of.

Being a successful and influential figure isn't a bad thing. Is it? I think it would depend on what your goals are.
Well. His goals are to do whatever he wants in this state, unfettered by the ordinary citizens. And he's been super successful with that. Glad that works for you. Works for him and big oil, too.

I'm moving while I still can. But now that you know about it, and it sounds great to you, come on over and move in. Property values are about to plunge, so good timing. Bring your own water. And schools. Mr. Pope's education agenda took one of the best education systems in the country and basically re-segregated it, freeing up those black people to not waste time in school.

Notice this bill was killed before it got out of committee. McCrocy had nothing to do with it.

I'm going to say this as politely as I can. I may have a more nuanced understanding of the dynamics at play here. McCrory is Pope's sock puppet. Nobody here does a damned thing Art Pope doesn't want.

When I saw how truly fucked we are I realized I'm going to have to sell my house while I still can and fucking RUN. That's a little upsetting to me. Glad it doesn't bother you, but I really need to try not focus on it because it (a) sends me into despair and (b) makes my head want to explode.

I like what I see about Art Pope so far though. Founded the Libertarian Party branch in the 70's and went from a commoner to a political kingmaker?
Minor tweak there. Not a kingmaker, a king. We get the policies Art Pope wants. There aint a damned thing we can do about it. I don't really enjoy the taste of his dick all that much, your mileage may vary.

People in one of our counties (the most frackalicious one) are about to find out that they don't own the mineral rights under their homes. They have no idea. How is that possible? Underhanded bullshit, Art Pope's specialty. They'll find out when they don't even get any money via eminent domain, they just get fracked and go frack themselves.

Oh yeah, under Mr. Pope we now have expanded eminent domain, so basically nobody has jack shit to say when the oil company comes to take your shit. Freedomalicious!

We could fight that all the way to the supreme court, except whoops! He brought in an insane amount of super PAC money and stacked our judicial system. Free liberty for everyone! Thanks Mr. Pope!

He already hand selected our state house in 2010. Liberty, FUCK YEAH!!!

I don't understand Libertarians, or maybe they're all Libertarians until they find themselves about to get crushed by billionaires and whoopsie diddle, they have no recourse.

Speaking of all the liberty Mr. Pope has brought us, the "no exposed female nipples in NC" policy got fast tracked. Personal liberty booyah! Same committee chair who sandbagged MMJ suggested we could put duct tape on our breasts. Seriously. Libertarians, you kill me, so much liberty you bestow. How could we ever repay you?

Sounds good to me. That's how you change policy.

Well I tell you what. I wish we could split the country into two parts. Those of you that think the plutocracy that flows from Libertarianism is a spiffy system, come live here under the rule of Pharaoh Pope. The rest of us can then go live not in a toxic waste dump, and maybe even have some say in the day to day circumstances of our lives and property.

Oh, did you know that? Apparently the oil industry has a huge amount of toxic byproducts that are very expensive to dispose of properly. Since most of us aren't geochemical engineers, we have no way of knowing whether those chemicals are actually required for the extraction or whether they can just be added to the stew free of charge. In other words, Mr. Pope has opened the door to big oil, they can now use NC as their trash bin.

I honestly don't want to deny Libertarians their right to live in Libertopia, sincerely. I want you to be happy. I just don't want that fucking hellscape to encroach on my life, tough shit for me.

By the way, while we're over here libertying it up in libertyville, how cool was that out of hand dismissal of our medical marijuana bill? If this is all libertish why the fuck can't we grow plants on our own property? In what way was being flicked off like a booger by that tea party **** liberty? What kind of drugs do I need to take to think this is a good thing?

The part that REALLY get me upset - is the notion that a group of constituents demanding their representatives HONOR THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE - being called "harassment"...

It's about time the towns people cry out in disgust...

Absolutely DISGRACEFUL...

Does anyone find it odd that the Republicans took over the NC legislature in 2010(for the first time in 130 years) and that is the first time Medical Marijuana bills were even attempted??? I find the total lack of attempts when the dems solidly controlled things for 130 years to be quite revealing. Don't go crying the republicans are evil because they won't do this or won't do that when your own side is ACTS IDENTICALLY!!!!!

why anyone would grows or smokes weed would support the restrictive, invasive social agenda of conservatives is beyond understanding. (unless you are a dealer of course)

it's just like the poor voting against their own economic interests in favor of a social agenda.

it defies logic.

If the Democrats were "my side" that would make perfect sense. I'm a registered independent because the Democrats suck.

The fact that I don't have any representation doesn't make this evil bullshit OK.

Unreasonable expectations tend to make things worse for oneself.

You seem to think that by ignoring those calling for the legalization automatically makes it where the legislature is ignoring ALL of its constituency. Remember what it took in California to get Medical Marijuana passed? Popular Vote! Right now North Carolina does not have the popular vote for it. Marijuana legalization bills had been Theorized about in Cali since the mid 70's. It wasn't until 1996 that one actually got to the position to be passed. Prop 215. Hell even then it did not work right and was not even fixed until 2010. And yet you expect a Conservative State to pass a MMJ bill in less than 3 years when it took Super Liberal Cali 30 years? LOL!

North Carolina is at the same point right now as Cali was in 1979 for gods sake! Give them some time to sort this out!!!

Really guy, you may want to lighten up on the Tahoe Kush and the Chemdawg. Too much of a good thing and whatnot.
