proper eye protection for hps/mh lighting

I haven't seen an HPS spectrum that shows any appreciable UV radiation. MH and fluoros, probably some LEDs for sure.

Can you see through them, though? I can't have heavy lenses on the bridge of my nose, I get a red thing that looks terrible, then put a band-aid on it and look stupid with a band-aid on my face. Plus, the band-aid is just thick enough to change what part of the lenses I'm viewing through.

They should offer these as Rx lenses, then it's just one pair of glasses.

That's the problem with welders goggles, they are made for looking at the light.

When you turn your back and try to see plants you have to take them off to see, even with normal or lower shade strengths I find myself taking them off.

The method sevens offer color corrected vision so they block th uv rays, don't over shade, and offer you the ability to diagnose any problems on the leafs under hps.

If your on a budget pick up some welders glasses, basically darker safety glasses.

But, if 150 bucks isn't painful to the budget, and your under hps light often, the method7s are the best hands down.

With welders goggles, they come in different shades of darkness. If you pick up the lowest number you see (probably a 4-5) you should be able to see through them pretty easily, but it'll block your peripheral vision. I see a few shade 3's, but they're more like glasses than goggles. Didn't see those when I bought mine.

If you get the ones made for arc welding, which will be numbered something like a 10, you probably won't be able to see your hand in front of your face once the light is to your back.... i got shade 5's and they work alright in a vert set-up.

I always suggest welders goggles if you're gonna be in the room where the lights are on. Looks like those M7 glasses are pretty sweet, but hefty price tag.

IMO ... you should always shut the lights off when working on your plants. Turn on a CFL or something. That's what I do now - easier to see, no HPS yellow color, and no $150 glasses to see the full range of color under the HPS. The M7's are cool and all, I just don't see 'em being worth $150 when I can hang up a $2 CFL and see just fine.

I don't understand why everyone wants the m7's? What exactly are the benefits?

As far as I can tell, the only real benefit is that it lets you see the full range of colors..... easily fixed with CFLs in the room.

Not knocking the M7's, obviously I've never used them - I just don't see any benefit that's worth my money. Any pair of sunglasses will block the minimal UV light put out by HID lamp, so there's no benefit in that area to a pair of $5 sunglasses/welders goggles.

Light intensity is the real danger, not UV. So really, any pair of dark glasses will work here..... the M7's dont even look like they filter out much light....


So... all they do is remove a little UV and change the color? Once again, not knockin' em... but just doesn't seem like something I can accomplish with a couple CFL's and a pair of sunglasses. Or are there other benefits I'm not aware of?

I grow with vert bulbs, so I'm pretty anal when it comes to my eyes. I shut the lights off and plug in the CFL's before I even open the door. Used to just try to avert my eyes from the source of light, but I'd walk out of the room with a headache and having a hard time adjusting to normal light.

i just use UV blocking sunglasses. if i can stare at the sun in them then they are good enough for working in my grow box.

Okay so a little further look into it... and the M7's are lined with some kind of silver or something to reflect the light, so it would work for intensity.... at least one of the two models do, anyway.

Honestly, hoods are good eye protection themselves. The glass on them filters UV, and the hood itself provides a barrier between your eyes and the bulb... unless you're really short. I've never had hoods hanging over my head though...

I've always preached shutting off vert lights or investing in some damn good eye protection. Those bulbs are at eye level.

on their website the fission series shades are said to be for mh/hps and they're only 99.00.

i would think the more expensive rendition series will cover both. i will find out in 2hrs when my lights turn on. my sunglasses came in the mail today.

Milky that's the exact model that I have. I don't really use them for MH since my veg room is all overhead, but I find them indispensable for vertical HPS. Obviously don't look directly at the lights and they should do just fine.
By the way, I find that even though the lenses make the viewing of the plants much easier than straight HPS, plants still look a few shades different when actually viewed in natural sunlight.

Milky - Nice glasses! I'm going to be doing some more reading on them later, I'm interested in the other pair - seems like they're targeting the vert growers with those.

Not sure if I want a pair yet. They're cool, for sure. Useful, yeah. But working in a vert room, tight quarters with hot bulbs burning.... I can hear skin crackling already....

Since eyes are so valuable, I feel the need to state that they need to be protected not only from UV, but also from IR, and from the high intensity, brightness, of HID's. A coupla people seem to think that it's only about UV. Good luck. -granger

I used to use real nice welding goggles for doing work in my vert room. Now I just unplug the hids and do work with good ol 60w incandescents. It doesn't take me that long to do my stuff, i'm just like a partly cloudy morning or something.

they actually have another higher priced model with a "silver hps* lens coating" for 169.00

had i known about it before my order i would have bought them instead.

its unfortunate you're having a difficult time getting in touch with the company. they seem legit to me. hopefully you're able to get some more information. I'm sure they're inundated with emails.
