Veg trees with LED?

Is it possible with current LED tech to veg 5 ft trees? Currently I'm using 600w hps but with the summer coming I'd like to switch to LED to lower heat.
Anybody doing it?

i don't know anyone doing 5 ft trees, but with enough lighting hung vertically i am certain it could be done..

medmaker420 is doing the first vert LED grow i am aware of. not sure how big they will get though. check it out.

Thanks. I'm not going to flower with LED's, just wondering if leds are good enough to veg yet.

check out the links in my sig entitled LED 1 LB+ GROWS
and
LED's Grams per WATT (GPW)

if those two threads don't convince you LED's are up to the task, then your not ready for LED's, but they are ready for you.

blue LED's in the 460nm range is your most advantageous lighting for photosynthesis to occur when in Veg. there are a bunch of LED arrays with this spectrum of lighting.

check out my LED Retailer thread for some PDF's that contain information on over 190 different LED arrays.

Not all higher wattage LED's run real cool, so make sure whatever you choose if you go LED is as cool as you need it to be. 5' might be pushing it unless you get a real big unit, but I am running a 384 over some plants, the tallest of which is just under 4', but I do have a 180 watt LED shining up at a 45 on the floor from one side. It seems like if your pheno is prone to chunky buds, that's what you'll get, just like HID, but having not grown w/ HID, I cannot say the density is equal.

in short, yes they can veg 5ft plants no problem

in long, lol

I would suggest doing a panel vertical to the side of the plants and yes they can do 5ft plants no problem. Now horizontal panels while in veg, unsure of the penetration as that would be dependent on the panels, wattage and many other things obviously.

I used a 90w...which is probly actually a 45w...to veg a tree so I could take hundreds of clones. Hanging it above was a huge failure. Using them for side lighting might work pretty good.

Lack of penetration will make the lower branches stretch for the top to get the light...and not fill out like a proper tree/plant. Was fucking ridiculous. From soil to any growth was about 18". It made the plant tall and weak in the stems...due to stretch...not the light as the tops of those branches looked fantastic.

i use LEDs to veg in a post clone setting. once they are well rooted and growing hard i move them to a 400w MH bulb
as long as you understand real VS supposed watts in a LED light i cent see why this wouldnt work.
you might be better off buying multiple smaller led panels than one huge one, but make sure you get 3w bulbs on any led panel you buy.
