areoponic cloning advice needed

Hi!

A friend of mine asked for me to post this as although I did grow for many years, I never did areo cloning.

Basically he has a shop bought areo cloner that has space for 30 or so cuttings. Now what tips can you give so that he has a successful time? Does he need nutes in the water? Does he he need to do anything to the cuttings such as scoring them or just a straight cut as normal? What does the water temp need to be?

Anything really would be useful. If this post is in the wrong section then mods please move.

Thanks to all in advance, TPS :)

I hope that this is a new cloner and not being unloaded by someone because everything in it keeps dying.

For myself, I had nearly 100% success using scissors and straight tap water with a submersible aquarium heater to keep temps at 75 F. Then something took hold and progressively more and more cuttings died with mushy stems no matter how much bleach I used.

It was great while it worked.

Yeah straight water only will work fine. You can add very light nutes once roots appear dependent upon how long you plan on keeping them in there. But just water to start.

Crusader...the thing I found with the problem you mention was tiny root fragments embedded themselves inside the spray nozzles...NO level of sterilization will help. I had to take a thin wire and go through each one to make sure they're clean. Blast water through the manifold then check it again. Once you have them clear, you should be back to original results.

Good Luck

In a 30 site ez cloner(5gallons of water ish) i mix two teaspoons of thrive alive(b1 green) and sm-90. I also run ro watern so i had 5ml ler gallon of cal-mag. I cut the clones and dip them in root tech gel before putting them into their collars. Within 4-6 days roots are starting and i usually get 100% success. Let em ride to 10+ days and you will have amazing roots. Crusader rabbit, did you change out the neoprene collars often(i do it every other run) also changing the sprayers once in a while is very important. Rinsing the cloner thoroughly and running straight water through the pump over and over is needed to get rid of all the bleach. Then allowing it to sit dry for 30 mins and air out prior to use is crucial. Bleach is needed to clean it proper but if there is any residual bleach in the neoprene collars or the pump that will really inhibit the cloning process. Changing out the collars is very important. Keeping temps between 75-80 inside the cloner is also important. Ez cloners have a sticker on the inside that indicates the internal temps based on the water level. I recommend using more than just tap water.

Hey guy's thanks a lot for all the advice and help!

My friend will be potting on in soil so would you say that doing this is still easier than soil cuttings? I'm guessing yes as for me when i did grow soil cuttings they sometimes would take ages to root.

Ive told him to get a aquarium heater and to make sure to clean really well after each run.

Again thanks for the help, it's appreciated :)

That's all good...but totally unnecessary. You know I carry a stone in my pocket that keeps tigers away...it works awesome, I never see any tigers! (Doesn't mean that's what's working for you) I run straight water and get the same results!!

Crusader rabbit, did you change out the neoprene collars often(i do it every other run) also changing the sprayers once in a while is very important.

Again, I respectfully disagree! I have yet to replace my neoprene...haven't even used the extra ones they give you in the original package!! I haven't changed my nozzles either. Again, just cause you are doing something...that may or may not be needed, or why you are getting the results you are getting. I have been running my cloner for years!

Rinsing the cloner thoroughly and running straight water through the pump over and over is needed to get rid of all the bleach. Then allowing it to sit dry for 30 mins and air out prior to use is crucial.

I agree with this...exactly as the instructions say to do. The only thing I would add is what I said in my earlier post. The small root fragments in the nozzles which get by the sterilization process will wreak havoc on your results. If you check for these and clear them you will get great results over and over. You can add shit to the water but until the extended run (with roots showing) it is completely unnecessary!

Also, I just added a tetra whisper fish filter 2-10 gal version into my EZ cloner and it has done wonders!! Highly recommended !!
It took shitty water in which I was not getting results in and needed to change out...and turned it into water in which I had explosive roots in 4 days!! Check it out!

Good Luck

Hello I have used aero cloners for about three years. I had 4 of them all 120+ sites both ezcloner and turbocloner. I had a entire room set up for cloning with a humidifier on 24/7 keep 90-100% hummidity at all time. The issues with aero cloners is heat from the pump. In the winter time its no problem at all but in summer you have to keep it cool. I had about 8 frozen 2 liter bottles of water I would swap out every couple of hours to keep temps undercontroll in the cloners. Also I had to add Ezclone Clear REZ to keep bacteria down only in summer from the heat. I tried many different rooting hormones to help encourage rooting the best one i found was Botanicare Liquid Cloning solution. I ran my pump with single bulb T5 all on 24/7 with great results. Make sure you clean them very very very well I stopped using them when I finally got cloning with rockwool figured out.

my airocloner works like a bomb.....

a scissor cut and clean water will work !!!
but i do a few things to make sure it works at its peak.

cut clones (20cm) strong and long from the top
mist/spray clone with clone water (over and above and stem )
trim leaves
diagonal cut and peel thin layer of skin with razor blade (4-5 peels)
seradix cloning power that i make into a paste
light nute mix in rez . (5% strengh)
keep the water temp about 20-25 centigrade *****
airstone ..... the more air the better
a splash of H2O2 (hydrogren peroxide) about 1ml / litre of the 35% strength
no dome , mist a few times the first 3-4 days
a little bit of cfl light 50w sq meter
the pump can run 24/7 , or you can set on a timer 5min on/off
no fan.

should have roots from 7-14 days

Yo!

Good to read all this cool advice. Ive been seriously impressed with how easy it is to use these. Got a water heater keeping temps at 22 degrees and get roots in 10 days easy.

Wash it out and ready to go again. Highly recommend :)
