Plants sleeping times..interesting

Hi all,

I have noticed something rather interesting...

I have a camera on my plants of which ive been replaying on a very fast forward basis for the last few days.

I am in veg on 18/6 lighting my lights off times are 9am - 3pm. Ive noticed at about 2-3am the leaves drop like they are having a snooze then they perk up again about 10-11am (when the lights are off) and remain perked up until the early hours of the morning again..All 12 of them seem to sleep at the same time although the enviroment is exactly the same throughout (same temp, humidity lighting)

Anyone else noticed this? Just interesting how they all take a break at the same time...they are 8 days into veg and 3 weeks old

I allways thought they took a break during lights off which might explain how you can veg 24/7?

They aren't reaching for the light source when the lights are off so they "relax".

They are relaxing 5 hours before the lights go off then perking back up when they are off....

This is interesting as im wondering if you find a strain that stays perked up longer during the lights on cycle is might move faster...or if they are relaxing when the lights are on you are using to much light...

What system are you growing in and what is your watering schedule compared to your light schedule? What are your temps hourly through out your lights on period?

I am using 2 x 2.1m NFT tables joined together with 4 x 1" pipes

Temp at lights on constantly 26 degrees (79F)
Water temp 20 degrees (68F)
Temp at lights off 18 degrees (65F)
3 x vertical 400W metal halides between the 2 nft tables
NFT pumps on 24/7
plants in 3" rockwool cubes on NFT's spreader matt
Current lighting 18/6

Hi SinisterZane,
That's fascinating. I've always been a believer in 18/6 for vegging as opposed to 24/0. I was always of the opinion that the plants couldn't photothynsesize for 24 and that they shut down (slept) for about 6 hours a day, regardless of the light regimen. However, I always thought that if you followed a 18/6 regimen, the plants would kinda ' fall into step' and sleep for the six hours you've given them. That way you actually know when they're asleep and when it comes time to flower them, its easy to add 3 hours to their morning to begin with and kinda 'ease them in' to flowering. I was taught to do it this way and believed it.
However, you're findings with the camera seem to disprove this and your plants are sleeping when THEY feel like and not when you're instructing them to do so.
I am confused, have you filmed them throuought the grow and was this happening the whole time?

Hi Iffy....I have noticed it now 5 days in a row all 12 seem to fall asleep at about 2-3am then wake up about 10-11am..the lights are off between 9am - 3pm so they are waking up when the lights are off...can definitely see them perk up and droop during these times..its like they wake up at 11am then go to sleep at 3am after 16 hours :)

I'm not buying that they are just "sleeping".

Is there any way you can post a video of the timelapse?

The droopy leaves could be caused by your watering cycle. If the plants seem to fall asleep around 2-3am, try ensuring they get watered around 1am. This should rule out underwatering.

If they get worse, it could indicate over watering. How long do you water for?

The nft pumps are on 24/7 and they have only been on the nft tables for 10 days and were 14 days old from splitting before they went on so makes sense what your saying

Just checked again at around 3am'ish the leaves start to drop and by 7am they look fast asleep then they look like they perked back up by 9am...dropped down again for a couple of hours and by midday looking perked up again (9am - 3pm lights off)

At lights off, they do not sleep. Infact they carry on with other process's such as releasing carbon dioxide, and taking in oxygen and root devolpment etc.

However these findings are interesting none the less.

Noticed the same thing as you Sinisterzane. Also had the same light schedule as you. Woke up early one morning and checked on the girls. This was just after a transplant previous day. And same thing-they were all sagging. This really freaked me out. Being pretty new at the game i thought the worst and flushed them. Few hrs later they perked up. Next morning same deal but this time left them alone and sure enough a few hours later they were looking sweet. Thought nothing more of it. Figured the plants were just doing their thang

Interesting stuff though...could be to do with light intensity making them burn out quicker or strain dependant..perhaps the longer they are awake the quicker they will grow...definitely makes sense how you can 24/7 them though now

I've noticed this too, they start getting droopy 2 or 3 hours before lights out. It seems like they are more effected during high rates of growth and ideal conditions (lots of light, perfect RH, good nutes). It's almost like they become exhausted from a long hard day of growing.
